Today being Paddy Day 2020... when do you think we will have a ‘flu jab’ / pill / syrup that we can take to make us immune/ les likely to catch this 19 virus?.

Mod: The purpose of this thread is baked into the title - COVID-19: Vaccine/antidote and testing procedures - it's not a platform to push an anti vaccination agenda. If posters wish to discuss the perceived cons of vaccinations, or push various theories regarding 'the agenda' (whatever that is supposed to mean), open a thread elsewhere on it.

Purely down to numbers and logistics
A lot more people in the 50-55 and 55-60 groups than in older groups

EMA saying its longer approval procedure was more appropriate as it was based on more evidence and required more checks than the emergency procedure chosen by Britain.

Seems a bit of criticism coming from some MEPs too.

Problem for the EU and EMA is FDA approval next week is also pretty much guaranteed so it will begin to appear like excess bureaucracy (even if it's not).

How many people are in the 9 groups posted previously?
What will it take to get them vaccinated in terms of resources and time?

If phase 1,2,3 are vaccinated will that mean there will never be a requirement for level 5 again ?
we need a new 5 level plan for getting out of this

If I was the EMA and getting political pressure I'd be more likely to delay than speed things up - in fact it'd be a great opportunity for them to put out a press release saying they are not going to listen to politicians. Getting it out a week earlier will be irrelevant in two months time when they are accused of rushing approval and skipping parts of their safety review.

BTW my understanding is any European country can choose to skip the EMA.

And as the EU is a bulk purchasing and ordering process,it would make sense the approvals is an 'all' process too.

My concern is that Ireland won't be set up for effective and quick distribution when approval is granted - and that we'll be a week or more behind others.

The EMA have already said they are hopeful of doing so before Christmas. Even if it were approved the vaccinations will not start till the New Year anyway. While UK might be a bit rushed, there's a acceptance that it will approved by other licensing authorities anyway. The UK need to be seen to be doing something proactive because they've rarely managed to do that at any stage of the pandemic.

I think we are perfectly within our rights to criticise that process all the same

Lets not even dare think about the HSE, they couldn't run a bath

Be better off tendering that out to a private firm

That wasn't really my point......I was trying to say that they were seeking to turn it into a political victory almost, by rushing through their approval to be seen to be ahead of their European counterparts.
I think we can see that the future relationship between the EU and Britain is going to be pretty spiky........ Especially if the Scots vote for independence and to rejoin the EU. Anyway that's off topic. Apologies for derailing it a bit. Back to the vaccine discussion...

Personally, I'm happier to see things done in a measured way, and I don't see the point in being critical of a roll-out that hasn't even happened yet.

Why not 49? or 40? If groupings are not clearly defined, you don't have groupings and its first come first served?

I have said this before and even Mc Sharry the TD on the tonight show last night said the same
If this goes wrong then it will be FF who will get the blame and not the HSE over whom they have little control
He knows if there is a way to mess this up then the HSE will find it
It will be all paperwork and regulations and union problems and everyone else's fault except the HSE ,that will be Tony's spin on it .
They have known for months that this was coming down the tracks and its only recently that a committee has been formed
People saying we have a great record of vaccinations and their rollout
When have we ever attempted to vaccinate 3m people in 6 months which should be the aim
5M population ,1m under 18 not being vaccinated immediately (unless underlying conditions ) and a 75% take up rate of the rest gives 3m
its possible but it will take the will and the ability to think outside the box, which the HSE clearly do not have
GPs ,Boots and pharmacies alone will not get it done

Any country in the EU can do what the UK done, the UK in fact done it under EU legislation.
It's not done by a vote from each county, they do it on behalf of all countries within the EU.

It's clear that some countries will have their entire population vaccinated within weeks, other will take months or years.
How will a normal behaviour, like travelling, be widely adopted across the continent? There will be countries that are still distributing the vaccine early 2022, when others have finished by this summer.
Will travel ban be still in place until all countries reach the same level of vaccination?

There may be less of a problem of distribution than people imagine because of the limited initial supplies of vaccines. They will be going to individuals in very clearly defined environments which the HSE have a lot of control over.

What I mean is, is 5 years really discriminating?
In the table there's is 50, 55, 60.
Wouldn't it be easier by 10, like 70, 60, 50, 40?

If the EMA say no or require further checks which slow it down there will be civil unrest across Europe
