Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Great thread,glad i found it.
My BBQ died recently after about 10 years of use.
Finding it hard to get a new one as most places are sold out. I also dont want to wait 14 days for delivery if ordering online.
Has anyone any recommendations for me. Either from somewhere i can walk in and buy today or order for 2 or 3 days delivery time online.
Budget is 250-400max and a 4 burner medium size is all i need.
    Thanks in advance.

Homebase have some good BBQs in stock

I find the orchard expensive and all they had when i looked were expensive webers.
I looked up Johnstown just now and they have some good options, thanks

They were doing Weber in past years but they seem to have got rid of all of those- they're stockists for Char-Broil now (and maybe some other brands, not quite sure) . Do let us know how you get on.
PS_ all BBQ suppliers/stockists are experiencing delays in deliveries due to such high demand this Summer but if they have the one you want in stock, delivery shouldn't be a major issue.

A few other sites are Newlands Garden Centre (I think they're still Weber) and Outdoor based in Goatstown and Limerick- they deliver (and weren't that bad when i ordered some months ago but not sure now)- they stock weber but also Broil-king that might be a bit cheaper- some out of stock right now but some look in stock for your price range

I find most decent butchers have pork ribs, with vastly varying prices.
I'd imagine many do not have prices listed, and so the quote price might depend on how you ask.

Go in with a cynical sounding "hmm, those pork bellies are expensive, how much per kilo for pork ribs?" will get a lower price than going in with an enthusiastic "is there any chance you could sell me some pork ribs? pretty please!" sounding like your mind is made up that you are getting them.

Not sure that's the case. It's pretty consistent across different butchers. Some weigh them, some don't. I'm buying them for years.

I've paid anything from 4 to 7.50 or so for a rack of pork ribs, with 4 being their "set price" for a rack.

Average these days is about 6 euro per rack for me.

Pork Belly is also different to pork ribs- more expensive for pork belly

I was bringing my old bbq to the recycling centre yesterday. I kept the plates as they are cast iron, I thought they be of use to someone. They are 19 x 10 in. I'm in Dublin 3, free to anyone who wants them

If you factor in the bones in the price per kilo the pork belly is usually cheaper per kilo of edible meat.

Check out your local Polish shop for smoked pork belly. Cut it into 10mm "rashers". Delicious on the BBQ.
They also have a Knorr seasoning which translates to just "For meat".
Rub this on first for a flavour explosion.
It's also fantastic sprinkled on some smoked Polish sausage on the BBQ.

Looking for advice from all you experienced bbq experts. I have a 2 kilo rib of beef in the freezer that I want to bbq for a family get together. The most I've ever done is to cook it in the oven and finish on the bbq. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Can anyone help me with my sticking issues.? I have a Weber 310 with the GBS grates.
No matter what i cook it sticks.
I've tried hotter, oil on the food, sprayed the grates with oil beforehand. Nothing works. I leave the food on a while, as in, I'm not turning it constantly etc.
Am I doing something wrong or do the grates need seasoning?

Don't know what your cooking but bear in mind that caramelisation occurs regularly on marinated foods (esp. with sugar/honey content) better to baste on the warming plate after.

How often do you replace the lave rocks?
I had to buy some in April through amazon and they need replacing already i reckon - all gunked up now.

Anyone know a good source for these rocks?
Or can i use regular charcoal on a gas BBQ?

Yes you need a 2nd grate which most new gas BBQs don't have unfortunately. They smell like real charcoal and help create a bit of smoke too

Can they be placed straight on top of the gas thingys :-) or on the brackets for the deflectors? There doesn't seem to be much space between there and the main grate.

The grills lava coals can be used with have a second grate just above the burners. You may not be able to use them depending on your model of bbq (I can't, I don't have the second grate, the burners are mounted high, and there's already a sheet of vented metal to gather drippings and allow turn into smoke)

Yeah I think you're right, I may wait until I make the "big" purchase sometime

The lava coals are handier for nestling packets of wood for smoking, but the flavour bars or whatever their official name is is waaaaaay handier for between season cleaning... fewer places for creatures to hide

Can the lava coals be placed on top of the flavourizers?

    They'll fall off.

I was concerned getting a new gas grill without a grate for lava rocks/ceramic blocks. However, I find the flavour from the flavour bars to be much the same and much cleaner with fewer flare ups.

Thanks for sharing this. It is really good and we are using it in our restaurant too in live kitchen. Best part of it is that you can control everything. Not like the charcoal one which continue once start.

I've noticed recently on Amazon that if I'm not using Parcel Motel the end price can be a bit higher because of VAT. That could explain the difference.

I've noticed recently on Amazon that if I'm not using Parcel Motel the end price can be a bit higher because of VAT. That could explain the difference.

Yes the vat difference brings 7.96 to 8.15 if it is 20% vs 23%, not sure if current vat rates are lowered to promote business?

You can use this site to see price histories.

    https://uk.camelcamelcamel.com/product/B017LU1DD4

If you are in no rush to get an item it is really good, as you can set your target price and it checks it daily and you get an email if it has dropped. It is not flawless though, sometimes there are lightening deals and it does not pick them up, and so they also do not show in history. This seem to be what is going on recently too, the big price drops are not detected. But you can see it does go down to 7.60. It is £13.84 at the moment

Irish VAT is temporarily 21% so the price difference is less noticeable.

Hey All. Great thread this. I just bought my first proper and also first gas BBQ. You would laugh if you saw what i came from.

I ended up with a Landmann Miton 4.1. I've just got the patio gas (propane) cylinder today but before i hook it up i noticed that some people say you should season cast iron grills. I believe these are enamelled cast iron. Do i still need to season them with oil before and after or do i just keep them clean and not worry about them rusting etc?

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Politics Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators, Regional East Moderators Posts: 12,110 CMod ✭✭✭✭Dizzyblonde

We never seasoned ours, I think they just become seasoned as you use them. Brushing them with a little oil before using them will help stop food sticking. Mr Dizzy turns the heat up full for a few minutes before each use and goes at the grill with a BBQ brush to clean it.

Not sure it made much difference but I ran half an onion on a fork over ours. Seen it on some YouTube video
