When a city had to be made example of, he would order everything living in the city to be killed. That meant all animals too.

One of the Sultans men however refused to acknowledge the Mongols, and sent their trade emissaries back to Khan with their hats stapled to their heads.

Khan demanded the be handed over to him for punishment, but the Sultan refused. That's when the Mongols started moving west, wiping out half the population of the Middle East and Ukraine/Southern Russia. The city of Merv was raised to the ground and everyone in it put to death (over a million people), it was thought to be at the time the foremost scientific, mathematical, astronomical and technological city of the age.

Had the Sultan handed over the offending party in the interest of peace, the world might have been very different today.

An interesting fella at the very least was Genghis Khan.

The thing about despots is, unless history tells us about them we don't know they exist. How many more are not written about or worse, how many more are written up in a biased and false manner. These days I have little regard for upper education as there is a creeping nature about it that will turn out young people who are misguided and sometimes plain wrong about things. The media don't help much in this regard.

unlikely. Vasily Blokhin of the NKVD did personally execute approximately 7000 polish officers during the Katyn massacre. He shot them one at a time over a period of 28 days.

Yeah, but he's turned into a cartoon villain in a way that lacks accuracy too.

There is good evidence that Stalin was different to other dictators in that he didn't believe his own publicity. He believed that the Russians needed a strong and inspirational leader with a nerve of steel, and that Stalin had to be seen to be that man, even though he wasn't.

Stalin also had an intellectual side that other despots and criminals tended to lack. I don't know whether that's a redeeming feature or it makes his crimes even worse.

As bad as Stalin was, he was also the most complex of them all.

Whereas the likes of Mussolini. Hitler, Mao and Churchill were totally ignorant in their violence and their intellectual vapidity.

The Pol Pot regime was absolutely mental. He basically just said there are too many people in the country, anybody slightly different to me or educated in anyway is dead.

For Hitler, if you were not ethnic German, cheerio. if you were fully fledged German you were OK but you're going to war and you'll probably die that way.

Stalin. Again like most Marxists, if you are educated or successful in any way, you're dead. Then he will engage in slow genocide. Famine, starvation, disease, you name it. All the slow death methods. It is absolutely Pot Luck if he likes you or not.

Mao Zedong. Killed tens of millions through incompetence. Not that he meant well either. Anything not fully fledged to the regime were dead. There was no silent majority. You gave your life to the regime or you are dead.

Bob Mugabe. Promised the world to black people of Zimbabwe. They were poor because of the white man. He chucked the white people off their farms. Thousands of white farmers and their families killed. Turns out farming is a lot harder than just planting stuff. Food shortages ensues, hyperinflation, failed state.

Lots of lessons for today. Charismatic leaders promising the world for the peasant class. Intolerance of any other ideology. Back us or you are the enemy. Blaming successful people for the failures of others. The constant divvying up and overemphasis of ethnicity and social class.

Big Government Left/Right, not good. Let society dictate what they want. Not activists, media, big business or politicians.
