Saying the USA case numbers are peaking is nonsense. It’s at totally different stages in different states. Cases are levelling out in New York but states like Louisiana are a few weeks behind and some states still aren’t locked down and are allowing gatherings at churches. They have many many weeks to go yet.

Trump has thrown out the line that they're doing more testing than anyone anywhere at multiple press conferences and never been pulled up once. Hes actually been pulled up on hardly any of his bullsh1t so his tactics of bullying and disrupting are obviously working. Reporter's are too afraid to ask the hard questions.

Actually he was questioned about it and he was told several countries were ahead on 'per capita' testing but he just went into his usual tirade of repeating himself with a lot of hand waving.

"I never said per capita, we have done more tests, brilliant tests, we have the best tests, I never said 'per capita', we've done more tests than any one else, brilliant tests, we're number one for tests, did you know I'm number one on Facebook? Isn't that something, I just found out, I'm number 1.... next question"

Do you not think it's the same here? Wages are very low (nurses strike recently comes to mind), healthcare here must be paid for if you want to be seen in any expedient manner (we don't have a 1 tier universal health care), schools are NOT free, childcare costs are through the roof, rents are massive with most places in Dublin and the surrounding area being unaffordable. We have a housing crisis here.

It seems like once there's an opportunity to look down on another country, you can then feel better about ours. Perhaps the only thing keeping many up is our welfare safety net and supplements. Is that the mark of a well functioning society?

My brother got cancer ten years ago. He required chemotherapy, radio therapy and a transplant. He was treated in a public hospital and it didn’t cost anything.

This does not happen in the US. We did not have to set up a GoFundMe for his care.

So sorry to hear that, hope he made a full recovery. Very glad that he was able to get the best care here.

For every one of those experiences though, there's a different experience of having to pay out of pocket, dip into savings, or get help from family to pay for health costs here in this country. This has happened a handful times for close personal family and friends of mine (also for my wife). There have been a couple of threads here on boards in recent memory that I found and read most of the way through, talking about lack of service here and having to personally cover costs to get seen to quickly. Payng for personal health insurance that they wouldn't be doing without for that reason. There were many sad stories about those personally suffering or losing loved ones due to not getting timely treatment in the public health care system.

Its ironic that Trump coined the phrase “fake news” to detract from the fact that he’s been the biggest perpetrator of the lies during his presidency. His ego and self absorbed narcissism is actually far more damaging and severe then I thought possible.

In an emergency, he demands people be nice to them which will determine the level support he gives them. He constantly lies about vaccines , about the severity of the disease and regularly makes important national emergency conferences about him which means the important message can be lost.

Decisions were taken though. Most of America is in lockdown and has been for weeks, some places since before Ireland was. Every state has declared emergencies. Kids are out of school. Non essential businesses are closed across most of the country. Field hospitals have been set up. The mitigation measures are working, even in the hardest hit city of New York. All that without Trump having to do anything. Imagine that.

The policy of closing travel from China was a failure. Thousands of people arrived from China after the ban, and were not subjected to a full quarantine.

The virus was already in the country by then and spreading like wildfire. He deserves the criticism he is receiving for not taking it seriously and focusing solely on actions that helped him apportion the blame elsewhere for his own failures, whether it be China or somebody else

Eh, I believe he first exempted the UK and Ireland citing our "very strong borders." Why didn't he include these two countries? You should ask yourself where Trump has golf resorts.

The 430k figure travel from China to America is when the coronavirus was first discovered in China, not when Trump gave the order to cancel travel. American flight carriers were grounded straight away, however there were some Chinese flight carriers that continued to arrive to Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York.
