Deeney matched up with him and basically bullied him. Lovren got drawn in with him too tight all game and started holding him instead of stepping off him. Look at the second goal. Ball bounced over his head. Third goal he jumps up and misses the ball, minimal contact from Deeney. Trent pass is then intercepted and they score. Just go up and head that ball away and there's no issue.

Van Dijk won 4 of 4. Lovren won 6 of 13. Its similar to when teams allow a center back carry a ball out of defence. Some people interpret this as this guy is a ball playing center back when its actually a tactic by other teams, "he cant hurt us, let him carry it". Van Gaal did this to Sakho a few years back. Damien Delaney spoke about this on Off The Ball recently.

You can probably go back and look at the second goal also. Just before that ball is kicked Van Dijk drops off giving himself a yard. Lovren doesnt. He just stands there and then cant get there. Would he have?? I don't know. Would Gomez have? I believe so.

I think the issue with Lovren is similar to the Mignolet issue for years. He unsettles everyone around him. His mere presence causes hassle. More than once Saturday I saw him fly into a challenge by the touchline and not win it. Imagine now you're playing left and right of him. He is at least 20 yards out of position and on his hole so what do you do.

I don't think he's good enough to play for the club in any capacity. My reasons are he unsettles the team and his ability is far more limited than his belief in his own ability.

I agree with all of that bar the last part. As a fourth choice CB who will play at most 4-5 league games in a season he is fine. He's played a few more this season because of injuries to Gomez and Matip but it would be unlikely that you'd see similar injuries to both again next year.

I'll also add that Lovern has a tendency to hoof the ball when under a small bit of pressure. This makes it very hard for the team to retain possession. Compare that to Gomes and Matip who are both comfortable with the ball at their feet and can play a short pass into midfield, a longer ball into the strikers or dribble past the attacker themselves to creat space.

If you could buy Ake off Bournemouth for £30m if they go down then that's the type of upgrade I'd be looking at.

I just don't know how you can watch that game and say Lovren was anything above awful, he was obsessed with winning the personal battle with Deeney and even on the rare occasion that he did come out on top in a 50/50 he just gave it right back to Watford anyway.

others saying this proves we're not on a par with the best Premier League team ever.
many of our own fans crestfallen at how bad we were.

every team that has won the League before us didn't play well occasionally, and had bad results. Arsenal drew 12 times, often against teams shíttier than what we're playing. City, even in the 100 point season, lost 2 games - including collapsing from 2-0 up at home to lose 2-3 to Utd.

the standards City have set the 2 seasons before this, and then the standards we have set over the last 18 months, have caused us to lose all rationale. every point dropped is now a fúcking crisis. we're in a position where I am having conversations with rival fans, who think it's banter to ask "well, are you going to bottle it?"

City win three League Cups in a row, and all the talk is about how superb they are. Liverpool go on an unprecedented run in the League, and it's questions about the quality of the League.

it was simply a bad day at the office. Lovren spread panic, our front 3 didn't have kick, our midfield was bereft of bite, Watford played superbly, Sarr was incredible, and our full backs were contained. this is all it was. it is supposed to happen from time to time. the fact it hasn't is fúcking mind blowing.

if that result and performance are a trend in the next few weeks, then I'll obviously be concerned. but there is nothing to suggest it. we lost to Atletico, but we created chances and didn't look that off it. we got through the West Ham game like we have so many others. this result, in my opinion, is the first actual blip in our trend.

Van Dyke dropped down to a 6/10 on Saturday and our defence resembled Rodgers team, just shows up how bad Lovren really is.
If he had a brain he could overcome some of his weaknesses, like lack of pace, strength and aerial ability but he doesn't and gets involved in petty battles trying to prove he is the big man.

It's not made up nonsense it's how his post match interview came across to me, he was saying how Lovren was only interested in fighting with him & not the ball & that Lovren was basically silly for trying to play him that way

Funny enough Jurgen said exactly what iv been saying Lovren actually done his job and took his man (deny) out of the gamet, VVD and Robbo where asleep for what occurred after that

'He tried to fight me from the throw in and I rolled him. He tried to fight me and wasn't even watching the ball and it worked out perfectly because we scored from it.'
