It's a great cop out excuse for the salesman in fairness, who forgot to spec keyless on the demo R.

Assuming annual servicing, and 20,000 km's per year, what do I require on my third service for my Golf 7R. Either of the links below seem to suggest brake fluid and haldex oil for the third service, as well as Oil and Filter. Anything else? I'm only asking because the last time I rang Joe Duffy VW for a service, the receptionist asked me "what did I need done...?" which kind of threw me a bit. I thought they would know that themselves :rolleyes:

Have you driven a GTi and tried out a DSG and Manual in both cars? The GTi is a lot more civilised, the R is just bonkers. Reminds me more of a WRX than a Golf.

You do know the new R, GTi and GTE(245bhp) will be here in the next maybe 7mts. Saying that a gaggle of blondes pulled up beside my GTi a few weeks ago asking all about the car, they loved it so it's still got pulling power.

Hard to know which one to pick out of the current batch on sale, I'd want a manual, my mates got a dsg and I much prefer driving mine.

The closest service interval to your usage is the 15k/ 12 month interval in that case.

What mileage is on the car? As if you are doing in excess of 15k kms a year, mileage dictates more than the time interval or age of car.

Oil change and inspection is due every 15k/ 12 months
Pollen filter every 30k/ 24 months
The first brake fluid is due at 36 months then every 24 months, mileage regardless.
Spark plugs every 60k kms or 48 months
Air filter every 90k kms or 48 months
Haldex oil service is due every 45k kms and DSG box service due every 60k kms.

30k kms or 24 months is the longest interval on them. You need to ask for a long life service, otherwise you'll get another 15k/ 12 month interval. The price shouldn't change.

If you were servicing with Keanes, they use long life oil in everything anyway, so if you were feeling brave you could reset the service light and drive on another 15k. The only issue would be your service book (if you even have one? Yours is a 2018?) and digital service history wouldnt match up.

I wouldn't be letting a haldex go 45k without inspection.

The previous generation haldex cars had a filter that needed to be changed every other oil service. Vw in their wisdom have done away with the filter and replaced it with a gauze (VW/Audi don't have a great history of mixing oil filtration and gauzes lol)

To be honest for me (i do hefty-ish mileage) the haldex oil change and inspection is now a yearly service item. The good thing is it's actually cheaper to remove clean and change the oil on the new set up than it was for an oil and filter change on old set up.

TFB might clear it up but as far as i know VW aren't acknowledging that the gauze set up isn't the best and i've only heard of one dealer removing the pump to clean the gauze - most just drain and refill. Several reports on the UK forums of haldex failures due to oil starvation.

If it was my car i'd be bringing it to a reputable indy, John Mills in maynooth isn't a million miles away from you and is an R owner himself.

Where would be a good place to get work/service done on an R in the Carlow area without going to main dealer, does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks, Was aware of Dalton's and how good they are.
Its still an hour drive for me so was looking for somewhere a bit closer to Carlow/Tullow town

I'm going to them tomorrow to get some work done and I'm an hour away too, sometimes it's worth travelling.

If you are just talking about basic servicing, like oil changes, brake pads etc, any competent independent mechanic should be able to do it. Stuff like above, Haldex pumps, DSG oil changes etc. I'd be going to Daltons for the likes of that stuff

Yeah it's more the in depth services, the standard stuff I can actually do myself

Sorry, I was a bit brain dead today. You’re right of course in terms of the intervals. I have been servicing every 15k km. I forgot I did 30k in the first year with two services. 15k last year and 15k this year, so 4th service with 60k.

Looking back at the service book and invoices, no Haldex was done at 45k (maybe it was checked, not sure). So it looks like brake fluid, spark plugs, haldex, and DSG all should be done at this point now (60k).

I better get the lube ready... this ones gonna hurt

That'll be a bit spicy at a main dealer but to be fair, it's probably not going to be mega cheap to get all that stuff in one go anywhere.

You'd be better off opting for what VW call an "ultimate service" as your car is basically out of warranty, that gets you an oil and filter change, engine air filter, pollen filter and spark plugs for €295, it's usually only for cars outside of warranty but yours will be out very soon being 171. As an oil change and plugs alone under the menu prices is going to work out around €310 depending on your dealers labour rate.

Brake fluid change is €49, Haldex should be €199 and DSG service €299 at a main dealer.

Then dont you know at 60k you're going to need brake pads or tyres or a few suspension bits :pac:

It’s a 162, so out of warranty now. Would prefer to get it done right anyway, as I’m planning to hold on to her for a few years yet. Just curious - would daltons be any better for this sort of thing, as I was planning on heading there for some ‘other’ work as well in the very near future.
