The Late Late Show Tribute to Gay Byrne, Tuesday, RTÉ One, 9:35pm

Ryan Tubridy has promised that tonight's Late Late Show tribute to Gay Byrne will be "really special".

The veteran broadcaster passed away on Monday, November 4, after a long illness.

Tubridy saluted his "great friend" and "magnificent mentor" on his RTÉ Radio 1 programme on Tuesday morning ahead of tonight's show. He described the Late Late tribute programme as "a happy wake".

Speaking to The Today Show's Brenda Donohue ahead of the show, Tubridy said: "Gay was a once off, so tonight is a once off.

"It makes perfect sense that we gather the troops, gather the family, the friends and to say a final thank you. Tonight isn't going to be maudlin, or morose, or mawkish, it's going to be upbeat, it's going to be fun."

The 90-minute live special on RTÉ One at 9:35pm will feature contributions from Gay Byrne's friends and colleagues across the world of entertainment and beyond, including Bob Geldof, Andrea Corr, Pat Kenny, John Sheahan and Mary McAleese.

Also appearing will be President Michael D Higgins, Joe Duffy, Sharon Shannon, John Sheahan, Finbar Furey, Tommy Tiernan, Pat Shortt, Eamon Dunphy, Twink and Mary Black.

You obviously aren't aware of how poor RTE's archive management has been over the years.

I've said similar on After Hours but it was a tough one for RTE to get right.
They had to do something and quick, but the audience being filled with the canteen all keen to watch themselves on the screen (Miriam) and try and get a "look at me moment" (Duffy with his Leaving Cert poem).

I presume they'll do something for Xmas or New Year's where they go and interview people 1:1 which would probably be better suited as a tribute.

Obviously and hopefully without Tubs.
It was great to see Mike Murphy though and I like the rapport between him an Pat, most genuine part of the evening. Mike was there like a proper after funeral reminiscing time, tell funny stories about the bereaved not "how can I sound this right".

As an aside I loved Pat's jibe at the lack of money, whilst Darcy, his wife, Duffy, Miriam, Whelan, Tubridy are all sat around her.

One of the joys of being retired is that you can “enjoy” watching these events as they happen. They form important memories going forward through life. When I grow old and weary I will be talking to my minders about the day of Gaybo’s funeral and they will not have even been born now. They will have read about Gay in school history curriculum and see clips of him on You Tube.

Yep, thought the same. It was painfully obvious that they'd had zero rehearsals beforehand. Furey's voice was inaudible, probably due to the sound guys making a hash of it, but it didn't come across well. then the second verse was sung by Mary Coughlan and it was like she didn't know the words so the rest all joined in. Really weird, jaunty version of what should be a poignant song. As much as I dislike him, Ed Sheeran does a pretty decent rendition. Last night's version didn't really do it justice.

Easily the best episode of the LLS in about 15-20 years. And that's despite (or maybe because of) some of the shenanigans that went on.

Tommy T is an ar$ehole who was talking in circles while trying to be deep and meaningful while, in actuality, didn't say anything.
Theresa Lowe butted into a conversation, uninvited, and basically said "I'm a great presenter, Where in the world was great, me me me, did you know that where in the world got more viewers than the LLS once?".
Poor Nell was out of her chops on medication and should not have been anywhere near the place.
Two planks I didn't recognise: "You tell this story better than I do"....quickly followed by "You're leaving the best bits out of the story!"
Poor Miriam looks more and more like the Mario Rosenstock version of herself every time I see her. Looked like she was a rugby player in drag sitting in a booster seat beside Nell.
D'arcy.......*shakes head*......that comment earlier about him being allowed out that late on his own had me in stitches.
Tubridy repeating everyone's jokes as if we were too thik to get waht they were saying.

Like I said, riveting television. Plenty of jibes about the old viewing figures, how Gaybo used to challenge the powers that be and how there was a great mix of funny, serious and controversial topics back in the day.

yeah - Darcy's wife! You never see Pat Kenny parading Cathy out to these gigs - and he would have more reason and right to. But Darcy cant go anywhere without Jenny - sitting there with a mug on her face minding wee Darcy in case he stays out too late

Same here,it over ran by about 15 minutes but luckily i recorded the second part of the Gaybo doc and got the rest of it. Gaybo doc was cut short though :mad:

That guy who invaded the stage was father of an RTE staff member there, suffered from bipolar and crashed car into RTE soon after. I think he later committed suicide, all very sad.

Watched the show up until Mary mcaleese came on. God she's aged badly. I do laugh at her coming from being the president of Ireland, having a bridge named after her, thinking she's the almighty powerful person. then thinking she can go over to the Vatican and tackle the powers that be there. Basically told to f**k off and coming home a sad, bitter woman towards the church just because she didn't get her way.

Any way rant over. I enjoyed pat kennys jibe, music was ok. Moya Doherty was excellent. Usual tuberity rubbish interrupting people and disrupting the flow. Micheal d should be put out to pasture. Didnt know what he was saying half the time. Looked at Miriam and thought she needs a new look, so many guests that I'd liked to have seen interviewed. Not bad for a last minute get together

I was so delighted they got Michael Dee out of the way first. It was great to have his ramble out of the way first.
