The Mega Mk7 Golf GTI/GTD/R thread

Any body with either of these able to advise on what the real world economy is of these?
There is not much between them in purchase price.
The gtd 625 euro more.
I do 25000km a year and really would prefer the gti but my head tells me the gtd is what I should be looking at.
I've only driven the gti and found it very entertaining.
Dealer says resale is the same for both of them. There is only 90 euro difference in road tax and insurance the same so fuel costs are the main financial difference.

Initial impressions are good...I've just driven it home (slowly) from the dealer but it feels a lot more comfortable (in normal mode) than my last car (Skoda Fabia RS). Gripped well and stayed very flat going around roundabouts. Haven't put the foot down yet but have a lot of (country) driving planned for the weekend so will get a good chance to enjoy it then.
And yes the black one with the standard 17 inch wheels and halogen lights was in the showroom and it didn't look half as good.

Gratz man. And I have to say, it really really looks very smart. Just shows how much dealers are out of touch.
Just today I went to carzone and had a look at demo some dealer had. It was white too, but completely turned me off it. Your car just put me back on it.

There are two 161 PP's for sale though one is incorrectly listed as a standard GTI.

Will be quite a rare motor in these parts, nice spec too. Lights make a huge difference to the front end, interior looks great too.

I am considering buying a 2017 Golf 1.4 TSI MATCH EDITION 125PS ( http://www.obrienmotorsltd.ie/viewanad.php?ad_id=2240223&r= )

the car is an import and was apparently owned by a leasing company before being brought over to Ireland. I test drove it and it was lovely to drive, but I feel like I am missing something? it's about €1.5 - 2k cheaper than similar models that I am looking at such as: ( https://www.fkvwdeansgrange.ie/en/used-cars/33642 )

any tips? is it because it's not highline? what would i be missing out on or is there a possible dodgy history on it etc?

Try Eireplates, pressed plates look much better than the ones garages usually put on the car.

Ones a main dealer and the others not so that's a cost difference straight away, there's 2 models in 2017 what your looking at there is a Mk7, the facelift one is known as the mk7.5 for in around the same money if you went north you'd have a 2018 mk7.5 home and vrt paid. I've noticed this too. You can't filter between Rs and GTIs on donedeal so I get alerts on both and it definitely seems like more Rs come up. And they're about the same money, a little more maybe, but not much.

Yea I think if VW had tried to make the R look a little bit more special the residuals would be better. The GTI is by far the better looking car but obviously the R is the one to drive.

It's simply because the R has completely outsold the GTI in the last few years, I'd hazard a guess by at least a factor of 5 to 1. Hence there's more used R's out there.

Surely we would all want an R, but GTI is more practical and a lot easier to live with. Running costs would be better too. Yes, I can afford R, but the millage I do, it will break me.
I wonder if a lot more people like this. So GTIs keep value better

Is higher insurance on the R a factor too? The R seems to have come bit of a target for criminal gangs using them as fast getaway cars in the last number of years and premiums seem to have jumped on them. 10 years or so ago it would have been rare to find a 300bhp hot hatch on Irish roads but then the likes of the Golf R came along at sub 50k making them relatively popular. I'm just wondering if being a high risk theft magnet and knock on effect higher premiums has resulting in a good few owners parting ways with them?

Nah. Insurance difference is negligible. Fuel and a bit more tax are really the only difference in overall running costs.

Yeah I checked it up when I was buying my GTI, I think there might have been 50 quid in the insurance difference. I'm trying to ignore the little voice in my head telling me I should have just gone all out.

That said, I'd have to have an R in a good colour, with prets. They're too 'sleeper' for me looks wise otherwise. Blue or white I think look great with Pretorias.

There is F all in it. €4.5k ish. I don’t think it’s one bit surprising tbh.

Those who were spending 50k on a car can afford to go 4k more to get R. Just for us mortals who buy second hand and still want reasonable running costs prefer GTI.
I would like R, but as mentioned above, it attracts unwanted attention. Maybe that's why I prefer Leon Cupra too. Take off Cupra of the boot and the only things that gives it away is double exhaust and brembos. Have it in some neutral colour and your average scummy boy will ignore it.

Price seems fairly hefty, here is one a year younger for not a huge amount more:

If your trade in is not worth a whole lot then it might be worth just selling your current car privately as all that is happening is that they are applying the discount of the Golf to your trade-in to inflate it's value so it looks more attractive. If had no trade in (straight deal) you might buy the Golf close to the same money.
