Where now for Irish population levels? That will be largely determined by future migration levels. Without any net migration there will be a steady, but slow population increase given fairly constant birth and death rates. With large net immigration flows, it could increase rapidly or not increase at all if net emigration resumes.
Clearly the country could accommodate say a twofold increase in population, to almost 10 million, and still have far fewer people per square kilometre than, for example, England, Germany or the Netherlands.
There is little evidence also to suggest that migrants, from the European Union in particular, push down wages or displace the jobs of domestic workers.

Mounds of litter blew around the streets and a thick smog that would nearly choke ya hung like a blanket over west Dublin. Dublin now is spotless compared to back then.

MFPM wrote: » Too lazy to make up your own, just thought you'd plagiarise? Maybe if you came up with your own questions, you could have made them somewhat less prejudiced.
This would depend on how one defines 'benefits' wouldn't it? You also are making a sweeping generalisation about the status of the migrants. One thing we could do is contact countries that took in 'waves of unskilled' at times 'destitute' and overwhelming 'economic migrants' from Ireland.
The same place where we'll house indigenous Irish people, we just need a change of housing policy away from the dependence on the private market. Of course if you wanted to make an immediate impact you could tell the French, Spanish, English, Dutch migrants takign jobs in google and driving up rents etc to **** off - what you think?
That would be taxation, perhaps we could stop giving tax breaks to REITs and increase corpo tax - what you think?
The same way we're trying to ensure the nuns cede control of our new National maternity hospital and in our 'secular' republic. Keep religion private and out of law making and state institutions - very easy and given that there has been no serious problems or issues with the migrants who have come to Ireland since the mid 90s, no reason to belive that will change, unless you know something I don't? Over to you, I look forward to your response.
