His whole reason for potentially pulling was because he did not want people to vote for him based on that statement. I would call that distancing himself

There is no diminishing of anyone's rights by giving the traveller the symbolic attribution of Special Ethnic Minority status.
There is not one single extra entitlement given as a result of it either.

It was a cheap shot by Casey and compounded by his sweeping followup generalisation.

No it wasn't. Casey only highlighted the situation in Tipp where the Travellers refused to take the homes unless they got land for their horses and 2 stables.
The Travellers actually rowed back on the stables bit by saying they would pay for them themselves.
Case did nothing wrong at all.

I have often seen them do that myself and leave their rubbish behind them when a court order was obtained.

They don't all do that. Casey generalised to stoke anti traveller sentiment and succeeded, clearly. Some would call that cheap generalisation - incitement to hatred, myself among them.

I don't think he was generalising at all. He would have to do a headcount for that to be true.
So it follows that anyone thinking so just wanted to try and show that he was and showing faux outrage to try prove their point.

Hmm right. Not entirely sure you actually know what a generalisation is then to be honest.

Verbatim, it sounds out about as much of a generalisation as it could possibly be. They, being the aforementioned Travellers.
When challenged on it he even says 'well, I'm just saying, the general conception...' before trailing off on some thing about Travellers moving into an area in caravans.

Does he account for Travellers who have since settled, but still identify or have grown up as Travellers? Or those who live in permanent structures on site?

Seems to me to be trying to paint a picture of a generalised, scaremongery idea of a Traveller.
