Interesting show today, especially the piece on children using the internet with Jess Kelly. For once, it wasn't the usual pearl-clutching segment you get on the Marian Finucane show or Today with Seán O'Rourke, but a very factual analysis detailing the risks associated with seemingly innocent apps (apparently Barbie apps for kids can have chatroom features); as well as a general take-away that older teenagers are generally not as stupid as we think, and should generally be trusted to have a bit of cop on.

Jess Kelly is a rock of sense, I'd like to see her be given a more prominent show on Newstalk, even outside the area of her own expertise in Tech.

Think mostly that she is good and do enjoy her Sunday show when I catch it. I do find though that she doesn't want to hear of any advocacy to restrict technology advances. She was on last week discussing the potential/likelihood of smart devices actively listening in to conversations and her view was "If we want to be able to ask Google a question, this is the price we pay". I think this is a bit of a weak position given the potential impact it can/will have in terms of selective marketing and influencing.

Her story today about the barbie app having chat functions and how they are used is dark.

Yeah, I agree with that alright. I've heard Karlin Lillington advance the same argument, and I wonder how much of that is down to the fact that these tech correspondents are in regular contact with the tech companies themselves, and may be seeing things too much from the companies' viewpoint, as opposed to the interests of consumers, which ideally, they are supposed to be reporting for.

And yeah, who would have known a Barbie app, or similar, could seem so sinister? What on earth were the app developers thinking when they come up with a chat feature? A ten-year-old child does NOT need to chat to strangers about Barbie dolls. End of story. I doubt many parents even know about that, or they wouldn't allow their children to access that kind of content.

She is great. I didn't overly listen to her today but I think there is a reason she is also often on Hard Shoulder and Pat Kenny. She adjusts her style well to other presenters.

Will listen back to the Jess segment later then as I like her, her show, and tech.

I wasn't keen on her when she started technology first. The science guy did the tec spot before her. Can't think of his name. He does future proof. She hadn't a patch on his knowledge at the time but in hindsight she was learning her craft at the time. She does know her stuff now & I've always liked her personality

Jonathan McCrea. Futureproof is one for the nerds; so yes, I listen. He's been on TV on RTE and TV3 and other channels too. I don't actually think he's a scientist or comes from a scientific background (I may be wrong on this), but he's certainly grown into that role.

He once presented a kind of "lads mag" type show on possibly TV3, but I suspect more likely that Dublin TV channel that ran on UPC/NTL for a while. That was "interesting"!

That's him. Thanks. He is a scientist. I absolutely love him. Great voice & you can hear it in his voice he loves what he is doing. I love Bruce Springsteen live. he smiles & grins through his 3 hour gigs. I always imagine Jonathan smiling & grinning the same way during his show. You'll always enjoy yourself more if the person you are listening to is enjoying themself too

Didn't Jonathan McCrea used to be a continuity announcer on RTÉ? A dusty file in the back of my head is telling me he was.

I agree he's a pretty good broadcaster. RTÉ really should have a programme like his on their schedule, it's well overdue; but I'm not aware of any.

Anyone care to tell me if Kelly commented on Serena Williams? Going to walk the hounds in a while, just want to know so I can decide whether to listen back to the whole show or just the tech segment.....

From what I can see he's not a scientist (didn't train as one or work as one), his background is journalism but I'd agree it's a great show and he seems to have a genuine interest in the topic.

She is and she isnt, anytime GTA or violent games come up she runs to the tired disproven stereotype of it making kids violent while ignoring the fact that its the parents allowing kids to play 18's games that is really the problem

    Has that been disproven?

Prof Brendan Kelly, who is perhaps the most eminent psychiatrist in the country, was telling Ciara Kelly exactly that only last week.

Listened back to the Tech segment on yesterday's show last night whilst walking the dogs. It was mostly good and informed, except for some opinion-expressed-as fact moment and the occasional emotion-based interjection from Ciara of course, example:

Jess: I don't want to scare the beejaysus out of anyone....

Ciara (cutting across Jess before she was finished and practically screeching): Oh I think we should be scaring the beejaysus out of people.

And that sums up Ciara Kelly.

It seemed fine to me. Jess Kelly had just mentioned an aspect of a seemingly innocent app which most parents probably wouldn't have known about. They absolutely do deserve a wake-up call.

And you're entitled to your opinion; I've no issue with that. Doesn't necessarily mean you're right and I'm wrong, or vice versa.

There were more perfect examples of that today. She was covering the new research about certain people having maths difficulties. 2 or 3 people phoned in who struggled with maths in school and she more or less forced it out of them about how it made them feel stupid/sad in school

There has been no end of studies on it and not one has ever conclusively proven it has an effect.

Most of the people pushing that tired mantra now are of a certain generation who tend to still consider games as being kids toys and ignore the fact that violent games are given age ratings that the parents who complain the most about this issue frequently disregard.

Can anyone answer me has she covered the Serena Williams incident at all this week or is it being strategically avoided?

Ciara Kelly had Simon Harris on the show yesterday to talk about the leaking of parts of the report on the smear scan scandal and her opening line was " Simon, I an a doctor and I understand some of these issues" I mean FGS, she is addressing a Government Minister, surely the producer should have told her to call him Minister.

I've said it before she's learning her trade. George Hook is still learning too. George's comment that became his downfall came from still learning his craft. It doesn't what he meant or didn't mean with his comment. It was a mistake to say it & I doubt any radio presenter that started at a young age would make the same comment

RTE train their presenters from a young age & I mean actively train them. Pat Kenny would never have made the mistake George did & he always calls a minister, minister.

When you throw someone into a radio show like this they will make mistakes

They live in the same town and probably run into each other regularly enough.

Anyone living out here would meet him often enough in Tesco's or wherever and address him as Simon.

Half the town remembers him in short trousers ffs.

Ciara's mistake was in not switching to presenter mode when interviewing him.

    I'd agree with sleeper12..

It's the difference between an amateur and an experienced professional imho.

I assume you meant to say "can't", but thanks for replying (genuinely). I'd love to hear her (no doubt) defence of Williams' behaviour, a la Marion McKeown on The Last Word earlier this week. But maybe even she was smart enough to see this was one she wasn't going to win?

You can see it as a defence/excuse. You can even see it a me criticizing ciara & George Hook because they are not trained properly.

Take it anyway you want. I really don't mind I'm just stating fact.

She did make a mistake not calling him minister. That is a fact too.

I like some of her show & other times I don't like it. I don't blindly defend the show. It is what it is. Both good & bad
