The Mega Mk7 Golf GTI/GTD/R thread

Any body with either of these able to advise on what the real world economy is of these?
There is not much between them in purchase price.
The gtd 625 euro more.
I do 25000km a year and really would prefer the gti but my head tells me the gtd is what I should be looking at.
I've only driven the gti and found it very entertaining.
Dealer says resale is the same for both of them. There is only 90 euro difference in road tax and insurance the same so fuel costs are the main financial difference.

They were all the real deal. Impressed by how stealthy they are in black tbh. 3 door looks so small inside too (to my frame anyway)

They are becoming affordable now, if I wasn't doing the mileage I am I would have bought a GTi or an R. 5 door all the way for me, 3 door will be a hard sell I imagine

The 3 doors are easier to sell I think ,
And rightly so.
They are 50% cooler :cool:

In a lot of cases I agree but I think the 5 door hatch looks good, the estate is a horrible thing. I mean as a trade in or private sale, most people want 5 door practicality.

On a lot of cars I'd agree with the 2/3 door version looking better, I really don't see it on the Golf though. At best they're about the same, and you've no messing around when you want to use the back seats in the 5 door.

I had a list of must haves when I first started looking, that I eventually had to seriously relax on. A 3 door was a definite no for me though.

I assume the VW configurator is way out of date? It still list 6 speed manual and DSG along with 7 speed DSG!, I thought it will only be the 7 speed DSG from now on?
So the range of Gti will be 7 speed DSG
Then the TCR then the R,
but only until 2020 when the mk8 arrives?

I am not in the market for a new golf unfortunately but I would definitely look at getting a mk7 gti in future,

Edit: agree with 5 door, the doors on the OPC are about 10 foot long so parking is a nuisance,

From what I've read, you'll still be able to get a GTI in manual along with the DSG but only in the GTI Performance as the standard GTI is being dropped. As for the TCR, that's DSG only as far as I know. Manual and 3 door in the GTD and R are going though.

Have to agree with the 5 door golf been a better looking car. In the mk7 anyway. Had mk5 3 door loved it. Mk7.5 R now. Only new to me still getting a feel for it, but WOW is the main feeling I'm getting

I don't see the point in them, if they break into your house for your keys they won't be long about waking you up for the code.
Best let them off with the car imo.

Car sales people will tell you the complete opposite. They’ll always be an enthusiast for a 3dr but 5dr is an easier sell to a wider market.

Very true, a 5dr is for obvious reasons far more practical than than a 3d and therefore will appeal to a much bigger customer base particularly to those with families. To say that one looks better than the other is ridiculous imo. as its simply a matter of personal taste. Sadly some manufacturers are beginning to drop 3dr versions of their model range and more will follow as it saves them a fortune in costs.

On the other hand there are so few 3 door cars that they get snapped up very quickly by enthusiasts.

A sales man will tell you one thing when trading in and tell a buyer the exact opposite.

It’s fairly obvious that a 5dr will have a broader appeal though salesperson talk aside. Looking at the majority of GTIs for sale, particularly from 2013 onwards it’s backed up.

One piece of advice..... Try and make those gorgeous wheels as difficult to steal as possible. They are very likely to attract the wrong sort of attention from the wrong sort of individuals.

I had a mate years ago that used to complain about getting into the back of my 3 door Golf. He said a 5 door would make much more sense. I said not to me, I never sit in the back!

Not sure but I park my car in my driveway pretty close to a wall, where it would be very difficult to remove two wheels at least. It might make thieves less likely to target a car if two wheels were inaccessible. Just a thought.

As for locking nuts... any thief worth his salt won't be deterred by those. They can be drilled out easily enough. I've also seen cases where they break into the car in order to get the unlocking bolt from the boot - so it might be an idea to hide that somewhere else. Of course, the alarm is standard on an R and it should trigger if a window is broken or the car is lifted off the ground.

Up until recently, I would have agreed. I've seen more of these wheels recently and I've been preferring them which is odd considering I used to hate them. To each their own though!

A bit random, Ive been told a VW dealer can lock your keys in the car for cases where you need to collect it after opening hours. Just curious how they do this, anybody know?

If I needed boot space the Golf estate probably would have been the first car on my list.
