**** Towns and Villages of Ireland

YupLimerick

What towns and villages in this country do ye think are just awful? In my own county (Limerick), we have Rathkeale, the inner city and more. Outside Limerick, Tipp Town is fair bad, as is Buttevant. Can't think of others atm.

It's all bollocks if you ask me. I've lived in Galway, Donegal and Kerry and in my opinion, Athlone is as good a place to live as any. Most of the conveniences and necessities of a city are to be found in the town, there's good shopping, great restaurants and vibrant nightlife for a town of its size. It isn't overly expensive to live here and there are fantastic transport links if to other parts of the country. I remember a woman I worked with in Kerry coming up for the Community Games when they were hosted in Athlone and she was extremely surprised at how much was in the place.

It may have those things you listed but I really am shocked at how filthy the area is. I was there recently and was baffled at how the council can allow it to to be portrayed in that light to tourists. Such a brilliant tourist amenity but so disappointing.

It wasn't as bad as the other ones but on the odd night up there, found it as dull as fcuk.

Any town with good employment prospects, access to decent third level education and a low crime rate.

I grew up a few miles from Newtown, and when I was young, that description yo gave would have been a compliment. In fairness, it has improved greatly over the last few years.

I don't know why Buttevant gets so much hate, it looks quite neat (with the exception when that dratted horse fair is on..) now that the road works are done.
It's a glorified village, don't be expecting a multiplex or an opera house.

Didn't like Youghal the one time I was there, fairly charmless place.

And as mentioned earlier, Ballaghadereen. I had the pleasure of going to school there. I was glad when I finished.

Just a very dysfunctional town.

Drimoleague, Cork hasn't been mentioned yet I notice. Nor has Rathnew Co Wicklow. Odd that. The former is just a kip, the latter is a dangerous kip. As someone who makes regular contributions to the 'worst pubs you've drank in' thread, my word should carry some weight when I say avoid going for a pint in Rathnew, in any pub. Now I'm pretty deft at ducking from a swinging pool cue and I can fire a barstool as good as the next man, but f*ck me, Rathnew...
