Cora was told she going to be used as impact sub which didn’t sit well, her club mates rowed in behind her. Apparently one of the more senior members got a dusting in a training session. When in the huddle she was telling players to do this do that and was told by management to concentrate on own game as getting cleaned out. She took the huff ... Rumours eh..,,

We have more than enough of this crap from H&C/Jackson episodes but she must have some power tripping going on if she is able to make the others walk. Its impossible to manage this kind of crap. He should have seen this coming and made an example of someone like Horan did a few years ago or not take her back.

I'd say there is fierce division between the new players and the old guard with the Carnacon and Ballintubber ones being forced onto Cora's side. The likes to Rowe etc want to move on with a new team and get the benefits of being star players (sponsors etc) and Cora is holding onto the reins. Its been clear for a while that Cora is coming to the end, the AIF last year was a disgrace, every ball had to go through her and it was a major contributory to them losing The other players who have gone would want to have a good look at themselves and cop on
flasher0030 wrote: » No way. You're just solely basing that on age. Cora Stan is still by far the best player on the Mayo team. It would be different if she took a break out from sport, and wasn't fit. But she has in fact taken it a step higher, and doing more professional training in the interim. I do agree with the mantra - no train, no play in almost all situations. But this is exceptional. You have someone here who played for Mayo for over 20 years (I think). Seized on an opportunity to go to Australia for a small spell, and get paid for it. And has now joined back with the Mayo team. For the management to let it be known that she will not get a starting place is extremely poor management, and copperfastens the narrow-minded mentality that exists in many people within the football fraternity (To demonstrate further, just look at Bonniedogs comments in the thread headed World Cup Final in the GAA section). In my opinion, on the basis of her credentials, what she has given to Mayo and most of all the fact that she is the best player on the team, she has to start. Impact sub? What a laugh. Only in Mayo.

Not that they informed the general public through the media unless you know otherwise ? From what you view as poor management it would appear that you have never been involved in management at this level if you cannot understand that management will not be reading out a list in the dressing room before the throw in, listing who is starting and who are subs. That is done in the week before a game at this level so that everyone knows there starting position, who they are picking up, who is coming in as an impact sub in what position, the game plan etc. and is then worked on in training. From posts here, exactly what happened this week prior to this weekend championship game. In other words, normal and best practice management at this level. Have you ever heard the expression "you are only as good as your last game" ? If so you should understand what it means. If not take a look again at the Mayo v Dublin league final and perhaps you will have at least an iota of understanding as to why management were not willing to start her.
flasher0030 wrote: » What are you talking about? Why am I supposed to watch the league final. Cora S. wasn't playing in it. A game Mayo lost by 13 points without her. Her last game as far as I know was against Galway, in which she scored 6 points. And if you really believe in the mantra "you are only as good as your last game", then please get a reality check. That's not how it works in the real world. And again, I have no idea of the relevance of the rest of your comments about naming teams etc. I'm well familiar with how teams are picked and let known to the players well in advance. Not relevant to what we are discussing. Or maybe I am wrong. My understanding (open to correction) is that Cora S was told that she will be an impact sub, and she didn't like that. And in my opinion, justifiably so. She has carried Mayo for years, and still does so. And is after several months of professional training. Again in my opinion, the manager seems to have some kind of personal agenda - obvious from the following interview.https://www.irishtimes.com/sport/gaelic-games/league-final-place-a-big-achievement-for-leahy-and-mayo-1.3480716

Is that not their prerogative? If Cora doesn't fit in with their plans, ok then. A legend she may be, but she is a legend who does not have a lot of time left at elite level. If they have made the decision (albeit a difficult one) to minimize her role on the team, for the long term greater good of the team, that is just life for anyone playing football over the age of 30 these days. How she is choosing to handle it (if the rumours are true) does not reflect well on her.
PARlance wrote: » She doesn't have to like it but a good "pro" will take it and prove management wrong over time. If the rumours are true, it's disgraceful behaviour from her. Throwing a sulk is understandable, even leaving the panel could be forgiven... bringing 9 others with you isn't. I'm assuming that she had a role to play in them all walking obviously. .
Tombo2001 wrote: » This bit..... Who is to say how much time she has left, and to some extent why does it matter. Looking at last years campaign - Mayo beat Cork, first team to beat Cork in LGFA for 7 years. Mayo scored 20 points, Cora Staunton scored 12 of them including just 2 from frees. This is more than just a good player. In the final, she was double marked the whole time but was still Mayo's top scorer from play; and the idea that her performance made anyone 'cringe'...... She then goes out to Australia and did incredibly well from the get go, something none of the male players were ever able to do. And she comes back, and people here think - well she's past it? She should just move on.....build a young team...... You've got a once in a generation player here. Once in 50 years......

She was told she would not be starting, but would come in as an impact sub. Rather than accept the management decision, a management that are appointed to make those decisions, she threw a hissy fit, walked and took 9 others with her. Complete and utter selfish behaviour with her county facing into a championship match at the weekend. Cora Staunton was a major influence for Mayo in the past, but that has long passed. Mayo have not won the Brendan Martin cup since 2003 or the Div1 league since 2007. I really do not know what your point is about this years league final is. Mayo got to that league final without her. Are you suggesting that the management should have dropped a player that got them there to be replaced by Staunton simply on the basis that she was back from Australia? We are talking here about the Mayo GAA ladies senior team. Not the Cora Staunton privately run ladies senior team. Even if Cora Staunton apparently cannot see the difference.
