I have a bet with a mate from when we were over at the Euros that Pogba wouldn't play in another CL final so I certainly had reservations about him.

However in his first season at times he was like a breath of fresh air. Driving forward from midfield and playing quick accurate passing while showing a level of physicality and skill when protecting the ball in the middle that I'd rarely seen in a United midfielder.

He had a bad time of it this season at times but especially in the 2nd half of the season there were players overloading his area of the pitch meaning he wasn't able to play in a way that suits him and is reduced to staying deep and trying to put the ball through the eye of a needle constantly.

Even look at yesterday where people will say he played badly. Played the ball through brilliantly for the penalty and forced the 2nd goal with a great surging run.

I do have a huge problem with the laziness that he is showing these days that I don't think was overly present in his first season and something needs to be done about that whether it's playing him closer to the striker where he doesn't have the responsibility to chase back or putting the fire up his arse so to speak. It's definitely a tricky situation but between him and Jose they are getting paid enough to sort it out.

That's fair enough but I'd wager that hadn't been a universally agreed opinion at the time. I had a passage where I wasn't keen on Pogba joining too. Same with José.

I just tied in all the replies as part of the response. I'm sure when you went back to find those you saw same reaction I saw looking back. It wasn't really a case of the majority being worried at the risk involved in it was a place thinking we signed a player about to have a huge impact.

I'm not saying its wrong to change opinions on Pogba and highlight the risks that were involved at the time, I just don't believe the concerns everyone now discuss about his signings were as widely accepted or believed as people tend to like to remember hence the hindsight comment.

As I said there were people who had and voiced them but the overwhelming feeling was delight in getting what many thought was not only one of the most promising young players but already one of the best midfielders in the world.

Then the replies came from people stating they didn't believe he was outstanding at Juventus and how the majority of people didn't, rather thought he was doing well for his age and had potential but wasn't consistent for Juventus or as big of as impact as their other midfielders.

Sorry on mobile so can't see the previous replies exactly but that was the jist. Fair enough for those who did feel this and now having a chance to justify and prove their view but I don't agree that these views were held by the majority of fans and users here at the time.

Which comes back around to my own original point, in that I thought that a common consensus at the time was that Pogba had done very well at Juventus and that he was an outstanding prospect, but that the Pirlo/Vidal question pointed towards a very real risk.

It was also noted at the time that we were not paying world record fees for the level of performance he had shown at Juve, but because there was the potential there to step up to another level again.

Its only idle talk but I do have to say, if those two points were not accepted at the time then Pogba would not have gotten half the criticism he has in the 2 years since. People wondered if he could fit into the team and if he would make the step up, they were watching for it specifically and those specific criticisms duly followed.

Khedira way off the pace tonight just as Manduzukic was last night hope there part of any deal involving bringing any Juve players in.

I didn't see a lot the second half of the Serbia match but anything seen of Savic today he looked very good. I haven't seen an awful lot of him but based on what I've seen of himself and Pogba this season I know who I'd rather have going into the new season especially seeing as he plays alongside Matic already.

I dunno the more I see I've lost patience with Pogba and I think his attitude Is his biggest problem. I'd love him to turn it around but I just don't see it based on him for most of last season and world cup so far.

Criteria to be a sports journalist:

My point is that the article is United linked to bid for player United continually linked to, for more than 12 months.

I don't understand why that is an issue at all, and I would honestly doubt it is based on him playing yesterday. I would only be calling lazy journalism if it was some random player United had not previously been linked to, and who had a great game yesterday; where it was clear the link was simply 'United might be after latest tv star'.

Don't get me wrong, I put United ahead of them easily. Maybe after years and years of rooting against them I'm changing with age :P

Last time around I wasn't too bothered, this time I'm not hoping they get dumped out embarrassingly. In my world cup predictor at work (IT guy created an awesome excel file for it) I have them getting to the Semi-Finals haha some stick I got in work!

I watched Lingard and Rashford teammates quiz the other day as part of world cup build up. Was gas really. Turns out in the photo of Rashford and Neymar they were talking about the weather haha! Lingard was having none of it.

Apart for 2 maybe 3 players. They have a bang average team and squad compared to previous tournaments, so I don't see how they can be dark horses. And they are all forward playing, so they will struggle defensively.
They should still get out of their group and may even get through the second round as they got a favourable group and draw. But after that they will come up against quality teams.

Imo they have enough good/competent players that if Southgate can get them to click they have a good chance of going far. They have less stars than Brazil or Germany for example, but neither did much over the weekend. England have better players, imo, than Mexico, but Mexico showed vs Germany that team approach goes far. Sure even look at Leicster.

England have players that, if they play well, can hurt anyone - Kane, Sterling, Lingard, Ali - just need to click. Not that I make them favourites, but they have a good chance

I think England have a better chance then they have in the past 20 years. They don't have as good a squad as they had in the so called golden generation but they have a hard working squad with the tight mix of flair and talent and hard working.

In my opinion the only one that will let them down is the same person that has made them so strong and that's Southgate. He has done a great job of getting the team together and managing expectations but I think if they fall shirt it will be tactically against a Brazilian or German team.
