So called top class operators can do lots of thing wheather it is profitable or not is another matter. Pidae says he bought them all in the one go so it is unlikly that they were all millars of calves. some more than likly were bog standard. U16 months bulls are a tough game and calves that are 4 weeks of age at present will need to be slaughtered in April before the real price rise for such calves. They were costing him 425 in the yard and all in 3% losses along with feed to any losses about 460/calf as a base price.

That is 850/calf to cover costs in a young bull system 930 to cover a 2 year old steer system and 1K if he carries them to slaughter as 30 months old cattle. He is at nothing. As Pidae says he is a retired farmer more than likly with a good SFP and OAP. He just wants a bunch of cattle for the front field and the dealers and dairy farmers know him and proceeded to bull him for the calves.

If they are buying by weight then I would suggest getting them weighed at your local mart. Less travelling and the cattle aren't knocked about as much. If the seller moves them to their premises for weighing (which could be a long journey) then they will lose kgs by the time the arrive, weigh lighter and less money in your pocket.
When I used to show cattle I would put them on hay for 3 or 4 days before the show date in order to dry them up.

Was sorting out feed this morning and we were planning on sending 16 or 17 bullocks to the factory on Thursday night for first kill on Friday morning.
Got a call for the agent saying he'd have to take them tonight as the factory are bringing forward all the kills due to the forecasted weather.
Had to rush and get 17 out and separated and get the cards. And then I could feck off to northern Ireland for work. My dad will load them tonight with the agent. Might get €4.00/kg but we'll see

Haven't heard that but when they want cattle they won't cut them. Killed bulls the end of January, lightest was 450kg heaviest 530kg. Got full price (€4) for them. It's only when they have too many cattle they will cut them. I think with so many cattle coming from the dairy herd now and average weights down they are less fussy abought weights.
