People do know this is a character right? And not an actual person?

Does it strike anyone else as strange that a made-up persona with a fake voice, parody accent and a fking plastic bag on his head is treated like a normal, regular person in debates and current affairs TV shows? And given the same credibility and respect as an actual real person?

Imagine Fr. Dougal Mcguire, Dustin the Turkey and Fortycoats appearing our incisive current affairs shows discussing mental health with Alan Partridge adjudicating.

Or discussing the 8th amendment and feminism with Mrs Brown, The Bottler and Podge and Rodge? It would be treated like a joke (obviously), but when the prank phone call making, glue-huffing, spastic hawk-toting Blindboy talks serious we all suddenly have to sit up take it seriously.

If I was asked to debate on the same show as a parody character I'd be more than a little pissed off.

By all means share your story on mental health or offer an opinion on our education system. But for fk sake would you give us and the other people on the show the respect of doing it yourself, in a real voice? Without a fking bag on your head?

Alternatively if you prefer holding on to the bag, you could try going back to... you know... being funny. And less preachy.

I've suffered with mental health issues for most of my life, I think he's doing a great job, we require multiple angels to tackle this problem, blindboys is just one, he might just be an answer to this problem for many people, possibly younger people. He explains very well how mental health issues have effected him, there's no better person to explain this than the person themselves.

Maybe I picked it up wrong but what I took from what he was saying is that the stereotypical lessons of "boys don't cry" is a poor lesson to teach a child, things like crying or expressing emotion are viewed as "girly" or feminine traits so boys are taught not to show those feelings. And that's what I thought he was saying about it's impact on mental health, a lot of men don't know how to express their feelings because they were taught as children not to which leads to some level of inner turmoil.

What exactly is your issue with an entertainer using their recognised character to talk about something they find relevant? What impact would it have if he did lose the bag & the accent, would people listen to him then? Maybe not. But if he does it in character people can recognize who he is and might leave him on long enough to hear what he’s saying.

It’s not all he talks about in the podcast either you know, he’s mentioned it a few times but he talks about other things he finds interesting & entertaining as well. He’s not forcing anyone to listen to him.

He literally says the same thing himself, he says he's a "clown" and because he looks different he gets more attention than if he was in a suit. He's campaigning for mental health awareness in schools from a young age, he's not saying he should go from school to school doing it.

Why throw in the word feminism? It's the wrong word and he's not a stupid fellow so i'm thinking he put in a current buzzword to get his soundbite.my issue is they're actually bandwagon jumpers and populist even though they try to portray themselves as part of the subculture.
As for men not crying or being told not to i dunno have i ever seen this in real life.when people like the rubberbandits talk about stuff of how things are in irish society i wonder am i living in a different place to you all? Men cry, i have seen it plenty of times.i have never seen someone telling a young boy to bottle up their emotions any differently to a young girl.rubber bandits tell us how society is but i cannot say it's what i've seen.they're not as in touch with common men as what they think.
