I think actor and actress is fine. Unlike, say, poet and poetess, who both write poems, actors play male characters and actresses play female ones, so there is a genuine difference. But most newspapers go with actor these days, the Guardian does in any case. The Oscars still go with actress though. Might be the next trendy "cause célébre" for the twitter bandwagon, I suppose.
