Can you seperate the body of work from the Crime ?

Take Kevin Spacey would you find it easy to sit down and say rewatch "The Usual Suspects , Seven or even House of Cards given that they are visible all the time on screen .

Or even if the rumours about say ....Brian Singer were to be verified do you just not watch X-Men series or again The Usual Suspects . Do TV or Film stations promote these things .

Rolf Harris felt like a personal betrayal, I loved those old Animal Hospital shows and Rolfs persona as the gentle grandfatherly animal lover. Coudn't watch those again.

Music seems easier to overlook, probably because I'm not looking at someones face and thinking of their crimes. It's less intrusive when you're not seeing them.

I don't think I can really enjoy another Kevin Spacey movie, looking at him and knowing the truth of him.

That strikes me as being a bit inconsistent (although I was never a fan of Rolf Harris in the first place)...

And yes, I would have no problem viewing work I liked regardless of the crime. I've seen some of Hitler's paintings - a lot of them are very good - and were actually painted long before he committed the atrocities he became infamous for. If you're going to go down that road, you should also include Albert Speer (Olympia-Stadion Berlin) and Richard Wagner (Ride of the Walkeries and indirectly Apocalypse Now)

I dunno. I love the works of absolute lowlives - Polanski, Chuck Berry. And of people with serious questions hanging over them - Spacey, the aforementioned "rock gods", I've huge admiration for the late John Peel as a broadcaster.

So my gut reaction is bound to be "Of course you can!" but maybe I should. I dunno though - watching a movie or listening to an album is not going to make a difference either way.

but having to look at Kevin Spaceys face now it would be in the back of my mind and probably take from it . I did enjoy the movies he has worked. Always found him entertaining

The Director of the movie I suppose that falls inline with Distance from the subject .

It's pretty hard to really, but as more and more of these stories come out all the time it's becoming increasingly hard for the world to do what was done to Gary Glitter all those years ago and completely forget about his music. You simply never hear it on the radio now. Will the same happen with Spacey, I doubt it.

I'd have no problem watching him. Someone made an allegation about something that allegedly happened over 30 years ago.

Even though I agree Polanski experienced horrific things nobody should experience, this shouldn't come into the equation in my opinion. He knew drugging a young girl and then having sex with her was just wrong.

What happened to him is really not a defence for anally raping a 14 year old… I don't think he's really as vilified as he should be. The likes of Meryl Streep lionise and defend the fooker. I think Hollywood giving him the oscar and the standing ovation at the ceremony really highlighted the hypocrisy of tinseltown. Pointing out that other celebrities did shady shít with kids doesn't excuse what he did either.

I have watched his films in the past but not any more I think. Also, I'd actively tell people to not watch any of the Jeepers Creepers franchise because of the past actions of director Victor Salva.

Great thread topic, OP. It's something I have been thinking about a lot in the past couple of weeks.

Because of my strong and enduring admiration for the amazing body of work of Roman Polanski. I think the man is nothing short of a cinematic giant, a true creative genius. Maybe it's my Slavic sensibilities coming to the fore, or maybe it is just the appreciation of great art, I don't know. But his films are utterly gripping to me, he makes something entirely and memorably his own - out of very diverse stories, characters, visuals. There is usually a subtle and gentle touch in his work, an atmosphere that encroaches on every story with a slight unease, and then slowly sloooowly builds into a bigger, or overwhelming menace, or an act of destruction. These films are for the most part utterly, and plainly, bleak and pessimistic about human nature and the nature of human condition. Rage, pain, greed, disloyalty, evil, inhumanity, disgust, cruelty.

Depressing movies. But, oh, wonderful movies.

This is a master storyteller. However, the story he tells doesn't have a happy end.

And then - the man is a horrible and disgusting child rapist, TOO. I have read what he did to the child Samantha and I can't fathom it, reconcile it or forget it. Perhaps just because in his work he is constantly, relentlessly pointing to the depravity of what human beings can stoop to, I would be the first to believe that any cruelty and inhumanity in himself would be exercised in that way. Unfortunately, not so. He had a horror show of an early life, and then another horror show visited him midway through. I would have hoped a man who went through all that would never be capable of visiting a horror on another human being. Sadly, not so.

So I am deeply, deeply conflicted at the mention of Roman Polanski. I feel two very different things at once. It may always stay that way.
