Hook recently said he was poor compared to his school friends because they bought records and he didnt. His idea of poverty is relative to those he used to associate with. His stories of washing in a metal tub in the living room was very common id imagine. Jesus there was a lot of houses in the west that didnt have the water connected up to the late 80s. They had the electric connected though.

I always take georges stories with a pinch of salt, he has never done the walking to school shoeless uphill both ways:D

His father was a clerk in CIE, he live in a small terrace house in Cork with one bedroom, you can find it on google maps...Albert Road. A fairly typical working class background in Cork City at that time. He has never claimed to have come from Angela's Ashes levels of deprivation. The only difference is his mother pleaded with the Head Brother of a fee paying school to let George go there. That school played rugby...otherwise we would have never of heard of George Hook.

Discussion about moving to County Leitrim and Hook manages, yet again, to mention that in a previous life he was in the catering trade. I can't recall starting an argument.....

I merely stated that Hook's childhood wasn't half as deprived as he sometimes makes out. Only today did I hear him say that his mother used to bring him up to the Dublin Horse Show every summer. Yup, very deprived......

I read George Hook's autobiography "Time Added On" a while back - and it's a surprisingly honest warts and all account - but he's not half the man his Dad was as he used to walk from Albert Road (Cork) to his job in CIE (Ceannt Station) every day. Ceannt for those of you not railway enthusiasts is the name for Galway station whereas Kent is the name for Cork's surviving station. From memory the error is repeated several times in the book or else Hook Snr. was made of sturdy stuff and ate girders for breakfast.

I think he is fairly honest about his background and he doesn't pretend it was anything other than what it was. The only problem is you hear the same stories again...and again...and again.

I think that's what makes Off The Balls position, in particular, so hypocritical.. ANY time that they have an interview with a representative from a women's sport, there is always some sort of SJW angle to the line of questioning. Looking for some angle to get offended by on behalf of women because of "lack of opportunity". Yet they themselves have never had a full presenter who's female.

They should start practicing what they preach before they start ramming their agenda down our throats.

In fairness Newstalk tired Orla Barry, Brenda Power and Norah Casey. None of them got enough listeners to justify them being there. Claire Byrne was poached by RTE, but it was only after she left that the Breakfast Show started getting decent numbers. Colette Fitzpatrick quit after a few months.

Let's be honest, if they had an all female line up before 4pm, Newstalk would be praised in the media for being "progressive". However, I think they are doing a good enough job try to burn the station to the ground (with the current lineups) without trying an all female lineup.

It's not about gender, it's about JNLR numbers. The JNLR's determine how much you can charge for advertising and ultimately how much money you're going to make. Kenny, Hook, Moncrieff and Yates have track records of getting decent listener figures. So, why would you replace them?

Healy and Tom Dunne didn't get enough listeners so they got move on. Same thing happen to Orla Barry and Brenda Power.
