If Carrick wasn't a great passer, imo, he'd have had little place in the United side imo.

I dont think anyone is questioning him and I'm definitely not I just said that Matic was a better passer in my opinion.

When Carrick played, he played in a deep defensive midfield position. He played in a team that had a very notable problem in finishing chances, all season.

Matic played in a more advanced position. In a more attacking side. That scored more goals.

It was considerably easier for Matic to up his assist stats.

Maybe I will be surprised, but I don't believe Matic is a better passer than Carrick was, regardless of what statistics might say.

I think Matic would be more of a risk taker than Carrick tbh and he does have a good passing range and I personally think that he is an exceptional passer. If you look back I have said that before.. I personally would have him on par with Carrick as a passer, so that would obviously mean that Carrick is an exceptional passer too but that's just IMO.

Beckham's passing ability is very underrated. What a crisp passer he was, both short and long, from center or wide.

Been watching clips of this Aurier lad thats been linked with a move to OT,he looks like an all action RB.

Ah his passing was exceptional which was highlighted when he moved to a more central position at the end of his career.

I honestly cant believe were there are disagreements about Carricks passing ability, yes at times he could have been more direct but there's no question his ability to pick out a man when he tries to.

I wouldn't say he was underrated for passing, more so in general.
Ultimately he had sublime accuracy and pace at which he passed long and short but some people questioned some of his other attributes and nit picked at him for that reason. Also his temperament at times probably irked certain people.

Did very well against real madrid anyway.

Spurs away under van gaal he played there and was exceptional. That game for me was the one that said he could be our rb for years. Would much rather give him his chance there rather than buy aurier and he come in and be a sort of balottelli type player

That's fair enough.

I don't want to come across as bashing Carrick. He was vital player for us and even I underappreciated him at times till he was missing and you see what he brought to the team.

I dont have any problem with him playing safe passes, its sure better then playing risky ones and I always thought he showed great maturity and had great head on him. Mentally very few were better then Carrick, but I think to say he was a Super passer(even comparing it to Matic) is not something I agree with. I respect your opinion though

Hi is all pace power an muscle but his ball control and decision making still lets him down.

Hes like a poor version of Valencia at the moment when playing RB. I dont think hes anywhere near ready to fill that role on a regular basis.

hmm you got me thinking now about having Keane ahead of him.

I can sure now see argument for him being ahead. I should have been clear in my comment when I suggested more CM positions then out wide, but ya Beckham could pick out a 2p coin from across the field. Nobody could ever touch him for a long pass, cross or freekick.

we had such a great team, all capable of playing superb passes.

Yeah Keane's passing was such a joy to watch, inch perfect and the receiving player didn't have to break his stride.

He was some striker of a football. One of my favourite players at united.

They didnt show his goal against west ham away in that clip. If you want to see a deft touch of a ball, look at his chip v west ham. First touch on the run, pure class

Carrick did and still can create good opportunities with his passing. His long low passes to the likes of Rooney and RVP's feet through were great at a time when United struggled to create through the middle.

Same reasons gary neville played rb. Didnt turn out too bad for him..

Way too early to judge. He was CB/DM in youth teams but shifted to RB when Van Gaal played him. So he is very new to the position and still learning.

But that was the point made, that he had the ability but never made the fullest use of it, he never tried to nearly enough.

Those low, long passes to the feet of Rooney or RVP were great but we never seen enough of them, we were far more likely to see him give the ball to Scholes to let him take the responsibility instead. And especially in his early years at the club thats exactly what it was, passing the buck instead of the ball.

Its easy to call Carrick a great passer of the ball and point to smart and efficient recycling of the ball in midfield, retaining the ball and controlling the pace of the game. Which is all well and good to an extent. But he had the ability to offer a lot more from a creative sense and it would have made a huge difference had he done so.

He had a good spell when he finally broke into the team but I was very disappointed with him as the season went on, at a time when we could have done with big performances I thought he was very ineffective. So I'm hoping a settled season where he is put in his strongest position (clearly centrally) and where he understands the team and Jose better(he was being played in some ridiculous positions last season) will be a more productive season.

That is a gross exaggeration of Carricks ability to be honest. He is starting to get to Scholes level of inflation. I don't understand why it is fans just spin myths and overblow a players ability as they come to the end of their career.

Carrick had a wonderful instinct of looking to pass forward first, but his passing was above average, but nowhere near special. He recycled as much as anyone else, and every now and then would hit a lovely long range pass setting someone in on goal or down a flank.

Personally, I've seen Blind be more productive and talented with his passing during his brief stint at DM, at CB and LB. It's why I just don't get why I'm constantly alone calling for Blind to figure more, he's just a better player then Carrick at the time the pair have been teammates, but then if people have that sort of mythical opinion on Carrick there really is no debate.
