Dresden, a big favourite of mine, is two hours away on the train. Makes a nice day trip. Booking train tickets early gets discounts, or it may even be covered on the great Schones Wochenende ticket (on regional trains).

German trains are a pleasure.

I took a day trip to Potsdam when I was there. Interesting, especially if you like history.

Sorry to hijack this thread but am thinking of visiting Berlin over the Halloween break. Does anyone know if shops, tourist places etc will be closed on the bank holiday Monday? Thanks!

Some smaller shops will be closed, but very few (if any) of the tourist places will be.

I totally agree about Potsdam. It is a beautiful place and so easily accessible from Berlin (only 20 minutes away by train).

Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp might also be worth considering if you're into history. It's north of Berlin in Oranienburg, easily doable in 20-30 mins by train, 3.30 euro each way.

If you're going to Dresden and have a budget, check out Flixbus - comfortable and cheap.

Leipzig and Jena might also be worth considering.

Hey folks, didnt want to start another thread on berlin, so just reposting here.

Heading over to Berlin, with my girlfriend for a weekend at the end of January. Flying in Friday morning until Sunday evening.
We are staying in Kreuzberg. Looking for suggestions on what do/see etc . Not necessarily along the lines of galleries but open t all suggestions really.
other suggestions.... restaurants, bars, outdoor sites, etc etc.

In Kreuzberg, the best thing to do for bars and restaraunts is simply to go for a walk. There's hhndreds of them catered for pretty much every taste. Difficult to recommend anything without knowing what you;re into.

Treptower Park is slghtly outside Kreuxberg, but it's excellent for morning/afternoon walks.

I'm heading here with a group of 4 adults in the autumn, the hotel & flights booked and staying for 5 nights- looking for info on best value/options for transport around the city and entry to main attractions.

What's not to be missed and what is best avoided?

Any recommendations for nice restaurants that don't cost the earth.

Is there anything like to coca cola bikes there, I'd like to cycle around the cit for an hour or so if possible.

Most restaraunts are quiet inexpensive, depends on taste and what kind of food yoou're taking about.

Dunno what "Coca-Cola" bikes are , but you can rent bikes by the hour/day all overt he city. Your hotel/hostel will be able to advise where the nearest to you would be.

Christmas markets will have started up by then - personal favourites are the ones at Spittalmarkt and Kulturbrauerie.
