It tends to be older men, younger women almost as a rule, unless you're JLO or Madonna or someone of that stature.

Back in my grandparents' time those age gaps of 10-20 years were the norm, one of my grandads was 14 years older than my grandmother and they had a long life together. What we forget when we hear those examples though is that divorce/separation simply weren't options back in old Ireland and women didn't have the educational opportunities they have today, with the marriage ban they were breadwinners who were expected to marry young and older men with good careers and stability were the most viable options.

Personally i can't imagine what the hell I'd have in common with a 20 year old guy as a 31 year old woman but it takes all types to make the world go round i guess.

It was very common in the victorian ages too. And before. I mean just look at the literature.

This was me and my husband when we met. I was 21 and he was 31. We got married a year after we met, to most people's disgust at the speed and the age difference.

4 years later, married and happy as ever.

I started going out with my other half when I was 16. He's five years older than me, not a big gap at all but was pretty significant at the time. Age gaps shouldn't matter if you have a lot in common.

Five and a half years between myself and the missus, not a large gap but I have always gone for people older than me.

I think it can work but only if you're in the same place in your lives. A 55 year old who likes to take it easy is not going to get on too well with a 25 year old that wants to go clubbing. That could be said for any couple though, I've always hated clubbing no matter what age I was so I probably wouldn't be suited to someone who loves it.

I do think that an age gap beyond 15 years or so can cause problems, as people age and one person may be healthier and a lot more energetic than the other. That being said though, I'm the younger person in my relationship and my partner is far healthier and more energetic than me so there are no hard and fast rules.

For me, anyway, I don't think I'd be too keen on more than a 10-15 year age gap.

Older women/younger men relationships probability wise are much more likely to fall apart.

But the biggest predictor of relationships lasting are how many men a woman has slept with, even when age gaps has been controlled for.

An old friend of mine is married to a guy who's over 20 years older than her. His oldest daughter from his previous marriage is just a year or two younger than my friend. I used to think it was a bit weird when they first got together, but they are actually really good together. Whatever works for people I guess.

Remember in the bar years ago we all about 18/19 one of the lads came out with "I'd love to ride a young one around ten".
Straight away another lad jumped in "so would I".
First lad looking at him strangely said "and another around half ten"
Second lad sheepishly said "well I meant around 14/15".
We all dispersed fairly quickly after that.
