I think the action of the sequel was easily on a par with the first, perhaps more so given the obviously increased budget & confidence of the directors. Indeed, the sequel was a pretty beautiful film to watch really, full of rich, bold colours and some genuinely striking compositions. On the other hand, to me there was little doubt about how flabby everything became between those fights. I don't expect - or want - nonstop action because that kind of remorseless pacing rarely works, but when the action stopped in Chapter 2, it felt like the narrative ground to a jarring halt and got replaced by slightly tedious and baggy exposition.

For all the intrigue behind this mysterious world & code of assassins, the delivery of the mythology gave the film a real stop-start stutter that wasn't present in Chapter 1. The first film was a leaner, shorter, more straightforward animal that only dabbled with world-building around the fringes while keeping a laster-sharp focus on its very simple plot. Inversely, the sequel nearly drowned in that world-building. The little mini-Matrix reunion between Reeves & Fishburne felt apt because like their former blockbuster, John Wick 2 was much like Matrix Reloaded: while action was amped up & arguably even better than before, so too was the lore, to the detriment of the end product.

To be honest I think the action scenes allow me give a total pass to anything that happens around it.

The choreography, the technique on display and the editing (the fact it looks like a continuous shot) is just spectacular. I've watched the entire film twice since it became "available" but I've watched the Catacombs and Museum shootouts about a dozen times

Keanu Reeves must at this stage have well taken over Val Kilmers "Heat reload story". His firearm work, transitions and reloading are unreal

I thought Keanu Reeves looked a bit stiff and clunky during a lot of the fight scenes which was probably just him starting to show his age. Decent enough film but nowhere near as good as the first. The plot was pure nonsense and not in a fun way like the first.

It was a load of fun.

Saw this on the plane home yesterday and gotta say there were loads of lol moments such that I'm certain I was disturbing many of my slumbering co-passengers.

The "secretive sideways sniping" bit at the public train station for example, hilarious.

Like the first film, I was grinning from ear to ear watching this from start to finish, along with several laughs at the sheer audaciousness of some of the kills. Absolutely fantastic.

If I'm being super nitpicky they could have lost Larry Fishbourne plot from the movie entirely as it didn't add anything at all, but I'd imagine that was there to help set up the third film.

Speaking of the third film, SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY.

Watched this again last night after seeing it in the cinema during its release. It's fantastic. Everything you want from an action movie. Car chases, headshots, cheesy dialogue, banging soundtrack, amazing martial arts sequences, class pencil related death, Rome as a backdrop.

More of the same please.

Little nods? I am a Matrix 1 and 2 fan. Both John Wick one and 2 were replete with references to the Matrix from start to finish. Hardly a chapter goes by without such homage. That's the whole point of the movie. Without it, it would just be nonsense.

He was deliberately wooden in Wick because he was wooden in The Matrix. Just delivers a few 5 word line sentences.

I will just list a few of the characteristics of The Matrix that were present in both these moves.

1. John Wick was The One, invincible.
2. Guns, Lots of Guns, as seen in Wick 2 when he collected weapons from a source.
3. Wick wore full black, as he did in Matrix 2.

5. The old fashioned land line phones and the way the sounded with a short repetitive rings.

8. The sound of the bullets ricocheting off the walls.
9. At the end of John Wick 2 the tramps on the street were after him, as in Matrix 1.
10. Laurence Fishburne in Wick 2.

All of the above is only a tiny amount of reference to The Matrix that never gave up in these Movies. So many of the set pieces in the Hotel and the final shoot out in the glass corridor were all inspired by references to The Matrix.

The director/writer is obviously a Matrix fan. I have to say he's extremely clever with what he did with this Movie and I though it was utterly brilliant.

Watched it tonight. Not as good as Chapter one but that's because I had no idea what the film was about.
Some Matrix tips or nudges towards but the homage to Enter the dragon I loved.

He was in it but you said he was in John Wick 2. Also nobody cares but you. Sure there's plenty of homages to the various films in John Wick but you're the only one who seems to be trying to prove something. Did you realise that many of the villains wear red shirts and is clearly a reference to Star Trek. The finale scene is also strangely similar to the final scene of Lady Snowblood. Or did you notice that one of the shots of someone playing a video game has the gamertag Point Break. Did you realise that the poster for John Wick 2 is an homage to a Harold Llody picture or did you just pick up on the obvious references that they kind of hammered home?

All I did was mention the number of references to the Matrix that I saw in every chapter of both Wick movies from sound effects to fashion to fighting styles to dialogue to even the narrative. There were so many that I'm sure if I watched them again I would spot even more.

I don't understand what you mean by that when you took the trouble to diss my observations which you yourself seem to agree with even if you didn't notice the volume of Matrix references? How could this movie stand up if it was a simple movie about a guy who wasn't allowed to live a normal life after leaving a cult and then went around killing them as if he had superpowers because he wasn't allowed to leave the cult. No doubt some seen the movie in that simplistic way. And it was very clever of the director that the movie could be taken that way.

In the final chapter of John Wick 2 all the ppl of the cult froze for a moment in the public street exactly as seen in Matrix 1 in that classic scene when Neo was introduced to the Matrix simulation. And when wick began to run away after that scene the tramp took up his mobile phone and eyed up Wick, or should I say Neo.

Give it a break lads, knowone cares. Most films have refrences to other films. Your both just going at each other for the sake of it. Knowone gives a sh!te about the mix between the matrix and this. They certainly didnt care while watching it. Ruining the thread.

Your over simplyfing the matrix, point of that seris is how we live in a generated world with 'choices' which inevitably are not our own.
John wick is nothing like that.

This being john wick with keanu, of course theres going to be some homages to the matrix as the guy learnt a hell of a lot fron the wakowskis.
To say there the same is just daft. Ye can agree to disagree

For me ive seen it three times now and the matrix comparision never popped in my head till i read this. I just enjoyed keanu kickin ass and cant wait for the third

I watched the first film and The Matrix didn't enter into my head once, and I doubt my enjoyment of it would've been changed in any way if I had read your interpretation of it ahead of time.

If it adds something extra to the film which you appreciate, fair enough

But I do think you're reaching to say that the whole movie is dependent on the Matrix. It's perfectly serviceable as its own thing (as it should be).
