I only saw a a few seconds of each of the 10 songs that got through last night.
They were all absolutely dire. I haven't heard the Irish one but could it have been any worse? It's boils down to countries getting through by having the least shíttiest song. God can only imagine the other songs that didn't even make the competition.

Eurovision is entertaining to watch, especially with a really snarky commentator. Wonder what my chances of ambushing my partner into watching the final with me is (low).

But why does Ireland keep sending in the same songs year on year? We need another "The Voice", a song that was actually good and sung by a powerful voice rather than popcrap. If only to have a song that wasn't either relying on being radio-lite rubbish or just bat**** insane, which is the other category of Eurovision songs.

Anyone got any memorable ones? The Voice, Ruslana's Wild Dances, Lordi (who were a brilliantly crazy choice). I liked that Only Teardrops one from last year/year before too. The singer did a good job of it. I also liked the contra-tenor vampire with the dancing gold people. The song was terrible, but he could do some impressive things with his voice.

When you look at the sheer scale of the production, the logistics involved in its staging & the fact EBU members across the continent essentially devote three nights to the broadcast of the show, I'm struggling to think of another event where the end product plumbs such depths of utterly meaningless banality.

I'd rather sit through an Ard Fheis tbh.

All things considered, I'd be disappointed if it was cancelled. When you think about it, it's kinda awesome - all these countries, half of them hating each other in the outside world, singing at each other for a couple of nights when much of Europe tunes in to slag each other off and Americans bitch about the internet being focussed on non-American stuff for a couple of days a year. It's extremely harmless international fun, especially when you take into account that most of Europe's "international fun" historically includes invading each other (actually, is pretty much historically composed of invading each other).

It's a good tradition. By turns daft, awful, stuck a couple of decades ago and occasionally with vampires, demons and Xena showing up. Long live it, say I!

(And the Americans can just cope with not being the centre of the internet for a couple of days)

I think the eurovision is a waste of money to enter, rte seem to be strapped for cash these days..

We'll never have a hope when all we sent was a spotty teenager with really bad hair and whose voice has yet to break and gave him a shíte song to sing (one which hopefully we'll never hear again as it's so dull and awful)

I do however understand whoever is in charge) doesn't actually want to win as it costs so much to host it hence the reason we sent the sporty teen to represent us.

Louis Walsh + Bland Song + Average Singer + little or no effort gone into stage show = early exit.

I wouldn't ban Eurovision but I would ban Louis Walsh from having any input.

If we want to do well, it will take a national effort bringing together the best and brightest. Leaving it to Louis to come up with something just won't cut it.

To compete in the Eurovision again ( we haven't "competed" in years) we need to forget the past and rebuild the entire process. Unfortunately that means removing a lot of people that only have their own interests at heart. Kill the rot and start afresh. All we do lately is send someone to sing a song.

There's some brilliant tech wizzes and animators working in Dublin at the moment, some working on Hollywood movies. They should be involved. An impressive stage show would be a good start.

Ireland need to take off these rose tinted specs and wake the fcuk up. We are a laughing stock. I guarantee you if we were ever to host we'd do some Riverdance crap again. We need to move on. Who on earth thought this song was a good idea? It's literally one of the worst songs I've ever heard in my life. We need to move with the times and stop with the retrospective romantic perspective because it is not working. The contest isn't the problem, we are.

Linda, Jonny, Louis et al have given themselves authority on the Eurovision here. Without that, Johnny and Linda would have no relevance and wouldn't be able to pop up year on year and reminisce on the good old days. They need to pass the buck now and give up the ghost.

I agree apart from river dance! we need something with the impact of riverdance...just not a copy or pale imitation of it.

I think RD was great 20 years ago but we need to get over it now. Like we did a jig one time over twenty years ago and we can't get over it since. That's our problem, IMO, we succeed in something a few times and we cling on to it for dear life and don't move with the times.

Its not about the song or the singer. Its about the whole package. Key changes, fireworks, choreography, stand out stage show, you name it. Don't ask me how the other countries do it, particularly the supposedly poorer eastern European countries, but they produce catchy songs, good singers and fantastic stage shows year in year out.

The talent pool is woefully shallow in Ireland, largely because if you aren't related or friends with someone in RTE you can forget about competing in something like this.

Lets face it, Eurovision is no more than a junket for a few people in RTE at this stage, and they are not going to let go of that. Laughing stock it will be for the foreseeable future.

It does, but it thsoe exact same people that holiday here and go to the pubs and listen to traditional music.

Can you name me some tv shows/movies that are 'useful' or have a point other than recreation or entertainment? I think eurovision is beyond awful but I don't think its any more of a waste of time than any other stupid show on tv

That's if it is really important to people. Which it really is not. Apart from media types.
