still feel while Girve was in charge lads succeeded in spite of him rather than because of him . Wasn't impressed with his time in charge but that is just my personal feeling on the matter. i'm sure plenty feel he did fine in the role.

So you don't rate Girve as a coach?

I think there is certainly question marks over how good he is.

Dardis just doesn't do anything outstandingly and isn't an elite athlete for his size.. his 17 year old brother is a better athlete and bigger.

There have been an almost unprecedented crop of youngsters who've come through the academy into the senior squad in recent years, particularly forwards. You're looking at guys as far back as Jack McGrath up to guys this season like ROL.

You note some common things with them, they're all highly professional and driven, every single one from front-row to back-three has better ball skills than anyone could expect from a group of Irish players, fitness is excellent, and while it's somewhat an external factor the quality of player has been pretty outstanding. An awful lot of that happened under Girve's watch. Think you guys are being a bit harsh on him, from where I'm sitting it looks like he did a very good job in the academy.

were those ball skills fostered in academy or did they start earlier?

hard to separate what Girve is responsible for and what underage coaches did.

As i said, I think you could certainly have questions over how good he really is.

Jury out on Smyth but at least he has a coaching history with blackrock and Marys AIL. You would hope he has a good view of clubs and schools with that background. You would worry he may be overly biased by his own Blackrock history as a student and coach but would hope not.

Girve had no coaching history when he got the job (B&I Cup a load of nonsense) Fogarty the same.

Lancaster has saved Leinster. Delighted we have him and delighted it looks like he is staying for two more years at least.

They are highly professional and driven as you said and those traits were all evident when they were underage. As MOC said when he was with us no one survives the Leinster system who isn't and who isn't a bit of a leader as well (look at the number of captains of schools/U20's etc who have come through)

He would be pretty shocking if NO players came through the system under his watch. The academy is meant to add the polish/prepare them for the pro game. Fitness, core skills, s&c are all worked on by the clubs and schools before they ever get as far as academy.

Agreed on Lancaster.

Also agree that i'm very skeptical about Fogarty as a coach.

Lots of talent coming out of Blackrock at the moment, so while it might look like bias to those who don't know, it probably isn't.

It's been the exact opposite of NO players though, it's been a glut of players basically like we haven't seen before.

Thing with Dardis is I saw Leinster training a while ago when I was in UCD for some reason anyway so thought I'd stop and watch them for a while, hed been back a few weeks at that stage i think and they did a bit of a training match and he got the ball at one stage and just beat 2/3 players with ease. Then he got injured the next week i think and was back to square one. I think theres a player in there just plagued by injuries.

I think Girve did fine, I don't think he's the best coach in the world but he's not the worst and youve got to remember it isnt just him especially in the academy I'd say nearly every coach in leinster is involved at some stage in contracts and training so its would be very harsh to blame one person for something, especially when the academy is doing so well.

What is the difference if anyone knows?

A player might be good enough for Connacht who are realistically fighting for 6th in the table, that same player might not be good enough for leinster who basically are looking for international quality players. i would agree there is an issue with players from big schools appearing better than there club counter parts. The academy should be looking rough diamonds to polish not the finished articles. Talking to an S&C coach from Leinster he reckons it takes at least a year to close the physical conditioning gap. There does seem to be some seriously short term thinking from academy managers since colin mcentee was replaced by girvan Dempsey

Certainly will be more offers made. Its only end of april so still bargaining time and there hasnt been just 4 additions to any academy in quite some time
Schoos players are seen more, get more opportunities so will more often than not appear better. Thats role trevor hogan is filling in Leinster. He is the provincial talent coach and he is focusing much more on clubs set up than the schools for now as they need the help/focus more.

Sub academy is screening process and will involve more players than are in academy and who have ability to step up to the academy in the near future. Sub academy used to see how players will cope in pro set up with the aim if good enough and ready. the player will go into academy later.

Sub Academy is very much like being part of the full academy but without the contract, they would train alongside the academy lads a lot but would also play AIL. It's more of a test to see how they'll fare out before offering them a full contract.

Charlie Rock is probably the most recent example I can think of a player who joined the sub academy and got promoted.

Was told that Frawley was offered Leinster academy as a 10 and Connacht academy as a 12 and choose Connacht.

Little point in comparing the Irish 20's setup to picking for academy spots.

20's are picking the best players for here and now. The Academy bosses have to pick 10-15 guys they believe might make it in the pro game. They're both very different kettles of fish
