The Mega Mk7 Golf GTI/GTD/R thread

Any body with either of these able to advise on what the real world economy is of these?
There is not much between them in purchase price.
The gtd 625 euro more.
I do 25000km a year and really would prefer the gti but my head tells me the gtd is what I should be looking at.
I've only driven the gti and found it very entertaining.
Dealer says resale is the same for both of them. There is only 90 euro difference in road tax and insurance the same so fuel costs are the main financial difference.

Basically dressed up that if you originally needed €4,000, you only needed €2,000 of your own money. Decent trade in price seemed to be separate.

Mad speed from a hatch, but odd that the estate is marginally quicker. Must be weight thing...

Bob Flavin's video here of the official Irish launch today shows Indium on a GTI. Looks good with the red bits, but maybe it'd be a bit plain on an R...

I had a good look around an indium grey facelift R today.
TBH there wasn't anything that I thought the mk7 was lacking, the LCD dash is nice but other than that it's more or less the same.

I thought indium would be nicer too, car didn't have prets so maybe I was put off by that.

Officially the 3 door isn't available here but the guy I was dealing with suggested it could be ordered. The performance pack is available but stupidly expensive.

Before I bought my car I was very interested in the Leon cupra 3 door with the sub 8 performance pack. I was told point blank there was zero chance of getting either a 3 door or the performance pack.
Have they changed their tune?

VW UK have announced details/prices of the R's "performance pack":

R performance pack
The recommended retail price (RRP) is £2,300 and the pack includes:

• R performance braking system
• derestricted top speed allows Hatch models to reach 166mph (267km/h) and Estate models to hit 168mph (270 km/h)
• new rear spoiler which gives 20kg more downforce (Hatch models only)
• 65 per cent tinted windows (this is already standard in UK)
• 19-inch Spielberg alloys

R performance Akrapovič titanium exhaust
This lightweight titanium performance exhaust with a honeycomb design made by Akrapovič will cost £2,975 RRP.

The R performance exhaust has round instead of oval pipes and will have valve control which customers can manage through the Driver Profile Selection. It’s 7kg lighter than the standard exhaust system, high temperature resistant and has optimal rust protection.

I don't think so. I didn't have time to have a proper look around. I did see a few facelift Highline's and the likes but no GTI's / R's...

Yeah I saw the one in Donegal up on FB! Not mad on those wheels but the prets are still a cheap-ish option. The digital dash is nice but the new radios look a bit odd. A bit aftermarket or something.

I think there's a few new colours with the facelift, that red and a new blue are especially nice to my eyes.

The Leon has always been a good looking car and I was tempted by it before I bought my Octavia but I found it too small inside.

Nope - hence I didn't do anything about it for 6 months :pac:

It's very subtle. It is a pain in the ass dropping it in but the dealers are fairly close by and they are good about warranty stuff, no qualms about getting it sorted.

Well I had the car in today and they replaced (rather than lubricate) the wishbone bushings but unfortunately it didn't cure the issue. So they're taking it in again next week and replacing the suspension top mount. I had those mounts replaced in the GTI and it did cure a creak/squeak in that car but I thought that was a slightly different type of noise tbh. I'm not hopeful it'll fix this problem but we'll wait and see.

yeah it's probably 300ps and 296bhp. The manufacturers tend to use the PS number cos it's a bit bigger I reckon

I asked for opinions a few pages back about Gti vs Leon Cupra.
Just wanted to say thanks to all for the helpful comments and thoughts.
After driving both and my thoughts going back and forth more than once, I have just put in an order for the Cupra.
Guess I am now banished from this thread!!

There's a thread on www.golfmk7.com 'Noise From Suspension' for the last few years it looks that the suspension top mounts plus bearings is the main culprit .. The other thing mentioned was steering rack bearings (the ones for the pinion) according to a poster also they were of slightly different design ..

95% of the time I prefer the BMW. Traffic on my commute is getting heavier every month so there's more comfort in the BMW. The last decent drive that I truly enjoyed in the GTI was new years eve 2016 down onto Achill island to stay with friends. I was late the roads were dry and empty and and it flew.
