Staying in a Hotel - Would You Complain?

Myself and a friend have been staying in a hotel in the West of Ireland the past few days. It says it is a 4 star, and the food and the standard of the rooms are very good.

But half the staff seem rude or at best abrupt and icy cold, a request seems to garner a sigh/eye rolling and they are carrying out renovations which means that some amenities stated on their website are currently not available to guests. The mobile phone signal is almost non-existent and the wifi is patchy.

Would you complain about this? I know us Irish tend to just suck it up and say nothing but should this be the way things should be?

Have you ever stayed at at a hotel and found it to be wanting in terms of what you had expected?

Oh absolutely. Some, you just have to laugh at. These people are none too bright.

Some are blatantly looking for freebies though or are people incapable of happiness. Like really, your holiday was ruined because there was a tiny chip gone out of your bedside locker, really? There are some people who will never be happy. Once one complaint is dealt with, they will find another. Anyone who has ever worked in the service industry or customer service has encountered many of these anhedonic losers.

Hi noddy. I'm not sure. At the risk of sounding xenophobic (which I'm not) I noticed that the rude and abrupt staff were all non-Irish. The Irish staff were very friendly. I was with my former partner (who is still a very close friend) and we might look like a gay couple to some - but we're not camp and we had our own rooms. One elderly couple stared at us one morning during breakfast but I take that in my stride.

No, I don't think it was my sexuality. Just the staff members in question being unfriendly. Which shouldn't be expected in a 4 star hotel.

The point I'm making is that it's ok to complain IF you have a genuine problem. Yes some people do like to complain about silly things which says more about them to be honest.

I get paid to do a job to the best of my ability. I do as requested and then I get paid. The day I dont do my job as outlined is the day I dont expect to have a job!

I was in a Hotel in Kilkenny there last week for a few nights with the girlfriend.

I Complained as they where doing building work on the hotel a that started at 7am every morning for our stay and it kept going to 7pm every evening. I am sorry but getting woke up by banging and drilling every morning is not nice and you cant relax in your room at all due to building work.

To make it worse i was never told when I checked in or was not on there website.

Thats a proper reason to Complain. Your hotel been a building site.

I had a few friends from Eastern Europe when I was at college at they commented to me in the past about how gay couples and gay people were so open about their sexuality compared to their home countries. Now these people weren't homophobic they were just amazed at how open people were here.

I always complain if a place requires it. I think people often do not complain because they do not want to be "that person" or they do not want to come across as fussy.

But these days my complaints have been well received and even gratefully received. Because managers and owners can not be everywhere at once and they need _our_ eyes and ears as the consumer to tell _them_ how things could be improved.

And they much prefer a single complaint they can receive and then action - than a bad review on trip advisor that will be there for all time.

And quite often my complaints have resulted in some or all of my money being refunded - or strong vouchers to use in a place again. In my time I have had everything from a free night in a hotel off the back of a complaint I made about a previous stay - to a free meal for 4 in a restaurant after I made some small complaints after a party of 20 of us had been there.

That said not all places like complaints. I was talking about this to another boards user who made a complaint related to _very_ poor standards in a certain Dungarven Golf Resort and the manager slammed the phone down on him. So he wrote a review on trip advisor and has received periodic (but entirely empty it seems) legal threats about "slander" and "defamation" abd "lbel" from them since. I won't link to this review directly but happy to give it to anyone who asks.

My dad is a bastard for complaining about hotel rooms. Inspects the room when he walks in. Aircon too noisy, view is crap, window doesn't close? Straight back to the reception to demand a new room.

I've only complained twice myself, once in Druids Glen because the whole ordeal was appalling, and once in a hotel in Mayo because some geebag at the checkout desk essentially accused me of trying to scam them.

Hotel staff are only human trying to please everybody for a partly wage, it hard job to do and sometimes people don't remember that,yeah ideally they should be sunny and polite but unfortunately that's not always the case.

Try and imagine if you're having personnal issues and dealing with rude and demanding people at the same time, don't you think that would affect you temperament sometimes?

No it's not an excuse for being flat out rude to people( which definitely deserves a complaint) but you can be damm sure you'd be avoiding making eye contact or smiling so readily.

I'm well able to paint my own house btw, thank you very much.

Yes I did mention money because thats the point. We pay for something, so therefore we expect to get what we pay for.

I dont expect staff to fall over themselves for customers, but what I would expect would be politeness, courtesy and hopefully a friendly face.

As I ve also said I would expect the customers to show some respect for the hotel staff as well.

I wouldnt be putting in a complaint about a staff member not being friendly but I would if they were being rude.

This thread may have been expressly about hotels but I think it extends to all area of service staff, I'm sure you'll find many unhappy staff in all these areas.

Hospitality is more of a job than a carreer choice,careers have prospects, it's merely a means to pay the bills.

I never stated that people were assholes,quite the opposite the majority of people I've dealt with are sound, but it only takes one arsehole to ruin your day.

That's all good and well, but you really didnt answer my question there plus your last point is just basically a rehash of what I already wrote. This seems to be getting kinda circular now and I'm ready to call it a day tbh.

Look. Unfriendly staff will result in less customers. Less customers will result in closing of said establishment. Closing of establishment will result in staff not having a job.
It is the hospitality business after all, so if you have personal issues you should leave them at the door.
Difficult customers are easily dealt with in a polite and friendly manner.

Either way they are being paid to do a job, I worked as a lounge boy for £2 an hour and a didn't take it out on the customers.

I would definitely complain about the staff, one of the key competencies required in hospitality is a friendly manner when dealing with the public, it's really not that hard to at least pretend you give a f*** for a few hours of the day.

Not full time, I tend bar occasionally at parties And small festivals,
despite what other people here might think I gave no problem serving drinks, I consider it an honour to serve (nice) people.

Its the minority that want suberservience that are a drag on the industry, trouble is they have a habit of bad mouthing you to anyone that will listen when they don't get it and then the us and them mentatily takes over.
