As a matter of interest did you spread lime on the silage ground, say the autumn, winter or spring before closing?

Roofed silage pit finally nearly empty (drew 4loads of silage out of it today), and 30 cows/incalf heifers coming in tomorrow morning from their lovely comfy home all winter in the driest 3acres of the farm. Well comfy up until 3days ago, we have got a silly amount of rain the last few days here, 3acres will need to be reseeded to say the least. I really should have had the sheds fully ready for them before now.

Target weight 300-350kg. For the first question that's a how long is a piece of string one tbh. It depends on what you are after. There years ago we paid 750 for a batch without picking iykwim.

I was looking at a batch of 30 mostly friesian type heifers with a friend of mine. They're being out wintered on kale and bales of silage (altho the kale ran out 10 days ago) they looked fairly miserable tbf. I asked could he weigh 5 ir 6 of them as they were close to the yard... told no as it was to much hassle. (Iwas the devil's advocate, my friend was the buyer)

If he got them at the right price now he has 10 weeks to get them right. They should turn around quickly but he doesn't need them to start putting on fat. Could be a bit of a balancing act getting them to weight.

Business as usual again, after 4days back inside. My end of Feb 30% target not looking great ha, only 1calved yet. 1st due around the 10th, I would of expected a dozen or so to have popped early. Anyone wanna loan me 40 milking cows for Feb ha?

Leave out a few heifers and graze lower covers and you should hit the 30% target. That's my plan anyway.

Let a cow in to tank this morning. Tank is too big to reach down and take a sample from the hatch so took a few buckets out of the outlet and then took a sample from there, do ye think it will do to test that?

Yeah i put it agitating beforehand, downside to the big tank. The grandmother years ago used to take a jug or two of milk for the baking by dipping the jug into the tank, wouldn't take it from the outlet.

How are you getting on with your liquid quota will you fill it? What are your cows in calf to?

Spent the last few hours ripping the parlour feeders. I powerhosed them before Christmas and thought no more about them but apparently they're NOT waterproof and the ration bridged in the augers. I'll end up having to get Dairymaster out to rip the feckers:(

Did double it in dec, 1/3 more in Jan. Too many late calvers! Liquid quota only 80gls/day.

I did 3wks of fr ai, then mostly either beef straw or the AA bull. I wasn't pushed about having many replacement heifers at all this year (had only expected the same 110ac in total this year), but a surprising number held to fr straws, and with the 13 I bought in, I should end up with 25/30 replacements. Afew BBs due to larger old HOs who I'm less pushed about keeping them in the herd.

Milk came back clear anyway. Must order the stuff for the delvo kit. Had two cows near calving mounting like they were in strong heats a few days ago, springing up well and all, one since calved. Spotting an in-calf heifer today acting the fool as well but no springing so I'm doubting myself now

All bar 2 sorted on one side and should manage to keep ahead of the other side as they calve. I had to crowbar the auger out of them, the plastic is surprisingly strong.

Scc 67 last collection! Before this the lowest it ever been was 87ish. I think it was only 3 winters ago when I remember being at the utter end of my tether with the Scc consistanly over 400k and glanbia constantly on my case. Nice to see progress!

Diet is as lib silage, good quality. Should I feed some straw to the ones left to calve? Any tips appreciated

Cut intakes asap. Definitely add some straw.

Just straw and rolled oats would be your best bet if heifers are calving down over conditioned

Are the heifers over fat? Have you stock from the bull previously? It might just be that the bull is producing calves unsuitable for heifers.

Got a dose of mastitis this week. 3 cows over the last 2 weeks. Checked all air liners and had a good few with holes in them so hopefully that's the last of it. Called to the vet for tubes and he said it was rampant at the moment. 1 poor fella calved 39 heifers and 20 had problems....

Have a cow here I was due to dry off this week supposed to be calving the end of April. I swear she's springing up, whether the date is wrong or she's going to pass the calf I dunno. Any suggestions with what to do. ? Would stop milking her run the risk of mastitis?. Shortest tube is still 30 days

I would put her out in a paddock and see what she's like in a day or 2. When did she calve last year, could she be full time now? She should just dry up herself

She calved early last year alright. May be best option alright. Would be afraid of mastitis alright. Condition wise she is fine
