Thought I'd update the OP with links and stuff for anyone who stumbles across this.

Was I the only that was left with mixed feelings after listening to that Cathal Mccarron interview? I know it's not the pc thing to say, but I just couldn't shake the feeling this was not a guy I would like to ever shair a pint with. I understand he is a recovering gambling addict, but the guy did some very questionable things and doesn't sound overly remorseful.... Maybe I'm being too harsh

I really don't know what to make of him. I only hope he stays on the straight & narrow and becomes a productive member of society because up to now he seems toxic. However although he is extremely honest on what he got up to, I'm not sure if I buy his lines about being a "big softie" and a "normal guy". Anyway hopefully he proves me wrong.

Same but prefer just the 3 and an in studio guest now and again. Donaghy was good last week, looking forward to hearing Mccarron. Some of the journos that ring in really wreck my head. I'm so over US Murph now as well

He said he hasn't had a bet since 2014. That's something.

Life isn't a bet of roses. Just because he is now in recovery doesn't mean things go back to when he was 16.

I seriously hope Cathal McCarron has good support around him.

A few things bothered me about that interview tonight.

At times throughout the interview he blamed others for certain predicaments he has found himself in. As someone who has been through Counselling and who is training to become a Counsellor I thought his inability to accept blame or more so his ability to say that others didn't help him as much as they should and the way he tacitly blamed others for his shortcomings meant he didn't have to take personal responsibility for them.

He kept on calling gambling a disease. I fully accept that some people see addiction as a disease, but sometimes this classification makes me feel uneasy, and given the entirety of the interview and other things said McCarton constantly referring to gambling as a disease worried me.

A disease is something we have no control over and attacks us without us asking it to. A disease is outside our control. If someone has a disease then it's not their fault. If it's not their fault then they can't help it thus it's the disease that's making them act a certain way and not decisions that they've made. It's very easy for someone with an addiction to be able to say 'Hey, it's not my fault I'm like this, it's a disease I have' and therefore the motivation and the accountability to change no longer rests with the addict.

An addict always makes a decision to act a certain way.

McCaron said that it was when he became dishonest and missed his meetings that he started gambling again when he was about 20. This self destruct button seems to be an ever present in the information he has given us about his life. For instance he wore a GAA top in the gay porn that he shot - he knew this would be seen and that he'd be recognised. I believe that it's possible that he did not know the 15 year old he was with was underage, however, yet again he put himself in danger and in the line of fire by signing up to Tinder whilst he was with his partner. He gave his real name to this girl, again he knew he was going to get caught. Are these cries for help or are they an attempt to push the self-destruct button?

I'm glad to hear that McCarron is becoming a Counsellor as he has to undergo 50 hours of personal therapy. I hope McCarron finds happiness and has a great life for himself.

I mean no disrespect to McCarton in anything in this post, this is just my take and some observations on this interview and I hope he continues to receive support. Support seems to work for him. The irony of addiction is that it gives the addict a meaning and a routine in their life, as chaotic as that may seem to non addicts. I hope McCarron finds a safe meaning and routine to his life.

Wonder what Ken Early & Ciarán Murphy thought of it all? They have appointed themselves as moral compasses over the years.

Not sure if I buy the line about not being gay either after watching that video. It didn't look like his first time doing some of those things.

I'm 100% with you here. I thought it was a strange angle to take from someone who's been through therapy, as he has. I was puzzled by the implicit helplessness he seemed to be describing.

However, it was an excellent and thought-provoking interview, in a way all the more so because his story and his take on the subject didn't quite fit the usual 'redemption story' narrative, and as usual McDevitt handled things expertly.

Glad I wasn't the only who felt he came across as really unlikeable. I hope he can keep his life on track, but the continuous blaming of others and lack of remorse really left a bad taste

I think Ciaran joined in with some questions during the interview itself? From memory he didn't sound judgemental.

Only caught up on that interview today.

Excellent stuff from Eoin as usual...really handled the subject well and certainly didn't give your man an easy ride.

McCarron came across poorly...totally insincere and doesn't seem to fully grasp the consequences of his actions imho.

I hope he sorts himself out but he has a very long way to go

Just sitting down to listen to election pod now.

I think it's good that it was put on the Extras feed rather than the main one. I think it'd be cool if they started branching out on this feed and do some stuff not fully related to sport. Don't think people can have too many complaints if they do the two sports shows as normal, maybe move out the politics stuff that people didn't like last time out to the extras for those that are interested.

I think I commented here previously that a politics/current affairs show from the lads would be great. Ken's viewpoint is fantastic to listen to.

It was decent enough, and I'm glad they put it on - though Ken spent too long on the Umberto Eco essay. It's an excellent essay and well worth reading, but it wasn't great radio.

Actually I would imagine that a lot of Irish people do care about the poppy..

The poppy story is probably relevant to this weekends events, and it probably is useful to discuss outside of the UK media who more or less all tow the same line on it for fear of causing upset.

But I had expected that the Ireland V Austria match would have formed the main spine of the show with the poppy story tacked on to the end? They obviously messed something up time wise, as the pod was only 45mins long (when most are around the hour?) so I suppose whatever they had planned to do to cover the game messed up or missed the phonecall!!

Doesnt matter though

they still got the live show plugs in so thats all that matters

Why? It doesn't affect us in any way unlike the trump election which is worthy of coverage because it will affect us. We probably don't like everything foreign countries do but I don't see why things that don't affect us should bother us.
