Yep, I do think Nintendo are more than capable of adapting and advancing into the future. The chances of them doing a Sega and making f*ck all of merit post-Dreamcast seems extremely slim and their whole approach towards making games makes it seem quite unlikely that switching to software only would have that big of an impact creatively.

Half those games there have always been portable though. Or tried home console versions that sold poorly, like fire emblem. We didn't even get a 3DS advance wars.

Not necessarily a powerhouse, just comparable to the XB1/PS4 coupled with similar architecture - to make it more attractive for 3rd party devs so we're not left with a machine with a short lifespan. Neither of them are powerhouses anyway.

Based on the rumours at least! Only time will tell.
But it'll be a little like the Wii U power wise again, given that the PS4/XB1 will be releasing slightly updated versions, it'll be a little behind, but being around the XB1 level should be enough to have the playing field levelled somewhat.

I genuinely don't think Nintendo have gotten over their disappointment in leading the field with the GameCube only to have it sell so poorly, and are reluctant to try to have the most powerful console again.

Will this be 3D capable, if it is indeed a portable console with a home dock thingy.
Will there be backwards compatibility with the 3DS/DS?
Nintendo have always been pretty good at making their new hardware play nice with the software from the previous gen.

And while we're at it,
The WiiU...
Software at least.
Assuming, once again, this docks with a, well, dock.
How about the combo of primary device screen and tv now connected makes it just waiting to play dual screen WiiU titles.

Plus, big guess again, if they put the hdd in the dock...
Preload your big games from storage, play them on the go.

If this is indeed a handheld/home console hybrid, I wonder how big this thing will actually be.

Is it a handheld designed to free up a TV a la the Wii U Gamepad for use within the house? Or is it going to be able to be used for both home and when you're out and about?

I doubt it's going to be able to fit into my pocket. I imagine it'll be similar to a tablet.

I'm not yet sold on the premise of the design. As for specs, I honestly don't mind if they're nowhere near the power of Xbox One or PS4. I have both already so that need is filled.

I'm curious about the design and controllers though. If it's motion control again, I may have to pass. I enjoy Nintendo's alternative gaming experiences but motion controls are gimmicky and have been done to death at this stage.

I'm hoping this is revealed sooner rather than later because my interest is waning at a rapid rate.

I thought I read it wasn't going to be backwards compatible with Wii-U? That's fine by me anyway.

If it can play 3DS games so be it but I doubt it would support 3D. They've already shown they can release a device to play 3DS games without 3D and honestly, who actually uses the 3D? It was a nice gimick but no need to waste money & resources keeping it for the next machine.

Since they using games on cartridge piracy should not be a problem,
if they are running an eshop digital download on the nx it,ll have drm.
I wonder what battery life will be like on such a powerful system .
This is a handheld unit that plugs into a tv.
Sony makes a non mobile unit that plugs into a tv to play psvita games , PSTV
there could be be a non mobile version of the nx if the console sells well.
I think this uses a new cpu and a new graphics card it,s unlikely that,ll run 3ds games .it could have a hardrive .
I dont think 32gig cartridges are a problem ,apart from its expensive for companys to make them. A dvd disc only costs around 50cent to make.

i don,t think theres much piracy on wi u games.
as above the nx dock could have a 500gig drive in it.
to store and play games from the eshop.
I hope they drop motion controllers,
this puts off hardcore gamers and is awkward.
motion control is like 3dtv ,a fad thats past its time.

I use the 3D for the majority of my 3DS games, really helps judging the swings in Monster Hunter too!

Ugh, I hate using the 3D. Can't remember the last time I used it, maybe for those rooms in Mario 3D land with the star coins and the boxes.

I use the 3D a lot but I can see why people don't. Much like the Gamepad, it's really good ideas not subsequently taken advantage of or utilised anywhere near enough as it should have been. When you see the 3D in the new Kirby and great it is, it seems a waste that it wasn't used properly for long spells of releases.

So they are aiming at the handheld market ,and nintendo fans,
Casual gamers ,cod players ,fifa players, won,t buy a nx ,they,ll buy an xbox or a ps4.
They are effectively out of the console market,
theres only room for 2 ,xbox and ps4.

There's room for however many are good enough.
And it varies from region to region.
Once we had the MD and SNES
Then the PS, Saturn and N64
Later the PS2, Xbox and GC
Then the PS3, 360 and Wii

Xbox have sold in the US and EU but it sold bugger all in Japan and Asia.
The GC may not have sold like the PS but it still sold a lot, and did well in Japan.
The 360 sold feck all in Japan too.

Essentially, as Retr0 says, the console is on a slide downhill in sales in Japan, but the NX could well turn it around.
It'll depend on the content but given the popularity of 3DS content there, the NX could have a ready made market for a compact console that serves a dual purpose.

I Don,t regard it as a console ,i don,t think its aimed at competing with the ps4 or xbox 1.
it,ll be bought by nintendo fans and people who want a new handheld unit.
mobile gaming is big in japan and asia ,where xbox sales are very low.
its like a cheaper version of a pc tablet,
Theres tablets that can run x86 pc games but they are like 500 euro plus.Maybe if it sells millions third part companys like ea will put games on it ,or it could end up like the wii u,
A system for jrpg and nintendo games .
The japanese prefer to support asian companys, sony, nintendo when it comes to buying consoles .

I'm usually excited about new hardware and I'm excited for Zelda but as I've said before, my interest went from "OH MY GOD!!!!" to "meh".

At this stage, I need to see it. The various articles speculating about what it is are giving me a skewed image I've created in my own head.

Edge magazine did a great preview on the new Zelda title, that should reignite your enthusiasm for the NX and what it might bring, assuming the already gorgeous game will be even better on the new hardware.

So it's pretty much handheld with HDMI output for TV.
Don't know, I like it. If they will have 3ds like rpgs, monster hunter, fire emblem, advanced wars etc, then I am on board.

My gaming right now is between pc and n3DS xl. Xbox one and ps4 have a good inch on dust on them.
So new Nintendo for me as handheld and all my other gaming on pc. Win win.

I've no time for handheld gaming, but find myself using the PS4 more than ever.
Even the WiiU doesn't get used by me much, aside from the other evening and an hour or so on StarFox.
The poor XB1 though, a glorified paper weight at this stage.

PS4 getting a lot of time in this house also, mainly The Witcher 3, Shovel Knight and Rachet & Clank (what a fun game that is!).

Just watched the below Digital Foundry video of them seeing how well the Tegra X1 chip handles emulating Gamecube & Wii games - just as a test. On the assumption NX will be running an X1 inside (but not Android obviously). Would be nice if was an X2 but maybe too late for that now. Doesn't do too badly at all and you can imagine Nintendo would get more out of the Tegra chip whichever one it ends up being.

After the rumor dust has settled, I'm glad it's not a super console. What good would it be to mimic the other two? I'd rather have something weird and left field to accompany the conventional console. Who knows what we'll see?

The predicted lack of third party support should not matter to anyone with a PS4/XB1/PC. I don't understand why this is an issue? I doubt anyone here works for Nintendo so I don't see how the lack of this support will affect any one of us here except those who only purchase Nintendo, in which case you know what you're getting into at this stage.

Let's just enjoy what's coming from a pure gaming perspective.

I'm going the opposite way of yourself lately and using the handheld about 90% of the time. This is partly due to my son starting to get interested in gaming so I have introduced him to Mario and Zelda so I have been having a lot of fun with him using the 3DS.

I have a huge backlog on the Xbox and PC but just can't find the time to get to them. I can see us picking up the NX when it comes out so myself and my son can play some games together so I am really looking forward to the reveal.
I am even thinking of picking up a new 3DS for myself as he is using the other one a lot more during the summer holidays and I have a 2 hour return journey commute for work each day where it will get a lot of use but I might wait for the NX reveal first.

The 3DS XL is a pretty cost effective way to play 99.9% of DS and 3DS titles in exist, €120, and you can still look forward to the release of the NX next year.

It would be nice if the dock slot for a har drive
eg open slot put in 500gig sata drive ,like as in the ps3.
The user can just put in a standard drive for storing music, video, games .
It would be nice if the nx had a youtube and a browser app and a music mp3 player built in.
of Course nintendo is not noted for doing things in a simple straight forward
way .
i think theres very few women or young people who work in the management of nintendo.

Provide cheap storage ,people will then buy more games.
