Yeah and even if you don't believe it's retail all you need to do is pop over to eir and see that their broadband+phone 1gbps package is €95 a month after their special offer runs out.

The cheapest phoneline + eir Fibre Extreme 1000Mb bundle appears to be €75 p.m. (eir Talk PAYU/direct debit).

It's in their official price list so available to order, as with their other standalone products they don't tend to advertise it I believe.

As a country we tend to talk about and plan things for so long to finally build them that they are out of date when finally done. At least with FTTH if we eventually get round to implementing the NBP it'll not be obsolete.

Aren't we already quite high on the Broadband league tables? And we've built hundreds of kilometres of motorway in the last decade or so, our road network is pretty good.

Where we're lacking in infrastructure is in housing and urban public transport. I don't think MNC's care all that much about the state of broadband in Ballydehob - they're not going to locate there regardless.

Doesn't matter what MNCs think, small and medium businesses are the ones that would benefit massively from this. And as the other poster before me said it's about time we thought of maybe building infrastructure that benefits everyone socially and potentially economically if it's done. I'd actually be able to upload more youtube videos if I could upload stuff in an hour or two rather than over an entire night sometimes an entire day. That's potentially more money being brought into the economy and being spent here.

People need to start thinking how this benefits people outside of the "oh well Intel will hardly come to Kerry" crap.

Anyone having problems with their Eir service today? Most websites don't load or are very slow. Looks like a DNS issue

Last night I was and a little bit today. Sync up was fine. Noise margin was fine. I do have congestion but it's never bad enough to completely stop web browsing like last night and this morning. I rang eir and they said the usual we're going to look at the exchange...get back to you in 3-4 working days. Nothing else we can do.. congestion..the usual ****e really.

KN are out around donadea in Kildare replacing poles. I asked one of them and he said it was for FTTH.

Something is happening in Kilmihil

The KN chaps have been out intermittently laying fibre cable (I know its fibre because I pulled over and asked them) from the Kilrush road up to the exchange in the village for the last month.

Our DSL is massively ****e (there are various threads on this)and has been for years (there is currently 16mb/s coming into the whole village) so I was instantly really hopeful.

I discussed this with eir in their talk-to forum here, but all they would say is that we are on the 2017 - 2020 FTTH plan.

Well.... doh!! .... I knew that from looking at the site. I was really hoping for more info.

The thing that is odd is that the surrounding exchanges (Doonbeg / Cooraclare / Kilrush) all had estimate dates on the map before the fibre was laid in those areas. Here in Kilmihil, nothing has changed on the map except the generic 2017 - 2020 1Gb statement.

I tried contacting openeir via twitter and they were just as vaugue.

I don't know what to think anymore.

They keep NGN dates close to their chest, you may quietly see an overnight improvement in service.

Is Imagine an option? From looking at their coverage map of Clare, their service seems to be stretching westward from Ennis.

A lot of exchanges in this area aren't getting VDSL, only Doonbeg and Cooraclare are, so Imagine may decide to cover this area as LTE coverage at present is sparse.

Does anyone local to the area know where the location of Clare FM's 95.5 site is? It may be suitable as Imagine seem to be using other companies infrastructure exclusively.

They were here most of Tuesday and dug several areas of ditch/side road to reveal old Telecom Eireann manholes which must have been there since the 60s/70s and were overgrown. KNN sprayed grass seed on top of the soil which was disrupted.

A neighbour had a much more successful chat with them. They were told that they are moving around different locations doing similar tasks such as clearing ducts/revealing manholes etc. They said another team will soon come to the area to start wiring up the fiber, that we should be live in a few months.

The manhole works and the duct clearing is now complete between the cabinet in town and 300 meters from my home which is the heavy duty work done. Once the team comes in to wire up the area hopefully they should move along at a fairly quick rate.

We were told that the final part of the process could be problematic which is the wiring of FTTH into individuals homes, in some cases its easy, in others its not so easy.

The guy also said that once the fiber is installed, thats the broadband network of the area fully sorted, that this technology is gonna be good for many decades, that in time it can be upgraded to faster speeds when needs be.

Having surveyed my area for FTTH Eir have now installed SOME additional poles, replaced some poles, installed new conductor and cut timber.
I presume this conductor is fibre.
2 questions:
(1) conductor was installed by Eir staff. (Vans had Eir logo on side). Are Eir staff installing fibre....I thought it was contractors only?
(2) How do they tie in fibre with the existing copper to maintain service. There do not seem to be any additional hardware on the poletops to show joints?

What do mean by Conductor?
