I couldn't agree less. Superb metallic colours. My personal favourite is Silberdistel Metallic (distel green - code 881)

Those w126 colours are all period correct. A modern colour would look so wrong on a classic w126, (that baby blue one is not for me)

Agreed, I'm just wondering would a nice metallic black look more the business.

I've had a fair few W126's. If I go for one again it'll be the Coupe. Either way I prefer the post '85 model with the smooth side panels. Not a fan of the Barock wheels either, prefer AMG mono block or the classic 15 hole ones. Has to be dark...black, blue or anthracite.

Worth an investment for a top one with all options, especially the Coupe.

EDIT: If I'm reading the reg on the W126 correctly then according to the NCT database it's NCT was up in March. Worth a call either way.

The NCT wasn't up in March, it was due in March

The car did not have a valid NCT before then!

Probably too much to ask, a half-decent W126 with a new NCT for 2 grand

S500 for me, It's the LWB version too.
I almost bought (albeit the 320 V6) a few years ago which had almost the same kit as that 500 and was an LWB.
I couldn't get over the legroom and sheer comfort in it.

Cheap, but will cost you another 7 years of max tax before it's vintage (that's over 12 grand) and surprise, surprise, reg hidden. You can bet money that this car has no test, probably hasn't had test for a long time and it's probably a wreck...

Get them while they're cheap. Yes, it's the 6 cylinder, but they're grand tourers, not sports cars. A good bit more affordable to buy and run than the V8. I'd prefer the V8 myself, but they don't fall into this price bracket. (And two nice reg plates to boot).

You'd always regret not having the V8. It's an incredibly heavy car and needs some poke. The difference between the 3.2 and the 5.0 is 1-2 mpg. 280 would be working hard to drag it about. Check under the battery for rust and replace the hydraulic fluid for the roof. Check for leaks from the 12 hydraulic cylinders that lock the top. It does need the staggered wheels to finish it off. The CL500 is an early one with a 4 speed auto and would be even thirstier than the 5 speed. Mine is considerably thirstier than the SL but an amazing car to drive. 10 speaker Bose stereo, double glazed windows, completely quiet inside but biblically thirsty around town. I said in another post that mine were the cleanest in the country

I was going to buy an R129 about 3years ago until family issues got in the way. I calculated the 500 needs 1200-1500 per annum more than the 280 to keep it on the road. That's minimum, probably closer to 1800-2200 in real life.

If I had the disposable income to cover it I'd probably get the 500 but I had a 300SL for a week in Germany a few years ago and found it to be a nice cruiser. That's why I'd be happy to get a V6.

Do you remember roughly what your calculation looked like?

Tax is 300 more, fuel maybe 100 more, insurance should be same and I struggle to think what the rest of the difference would be made up of. Maintenance really would be the same too. Unless you are reserving / saving money for when something expensive needs doing?

At this level of the market, we do not need to reserve for catastrophic and very expensive things like engine or gear box failure. Should that happen we should just accept it and move on to the next car.

Fuel € 770 (2 l/100km more over 25,000 km annual. That would be more like €650 now @ €1.33 per litre)
Loan Interest €230 ( 500SL in top condition is about €4-5k more than the undesirable 280/320, On the basis that I like to keep €20K in my savings account, I would have had to borrow ca €4-5000 to cover the extra cost of the 500SL)
Servicing, maintenance, tyres, parts €300.

The above comes to €1890, (or €1750 with cheaper petrol in 2016). On the basis that I'd keep the car for two years, and that the car is costing ca. €5,000 that was too high a percentage of my disposable income to justify a 500.

I suppose I'm a bit anal about saving a certain amount per month/year, but that's down to previous life experience, if my income went up I'd be willing to spend the extra on a 500 or 600.

The car would be fully insured as a daily driver, not a classic as I've no interest in limiting my mileage to a certain amount per year. I suppose I could have gotten the insurance price down a bit if I'd shopped around, but it wouldn't have made a huge difference to the overall running costs.

Fuel consumption and servicing costs based on reviews on German owners sites.

EDIT: i should point out that I was calculating ca. €4-5000 for a 280SL and €9-10,000 for a 500SL. There are cheaper 500's out there, but in my experience you need to spend near to €10K for a good one. Yes, there are exceptions and you'll always find a good one for less, but that's my experience of them.

I wouldn't be able to walk away from a €5,000 car when it can be fixed for a certain amount, let alone a €10,000 one. Used Merc parts are cheap enough there's plenty of those engines and gearboxes available internationally.

Very true, but I doubt the price would explode that much over 24 months, as there's still loads of them available. The fact that they wouldn't really depreciate is more important.

I was thinking more like €300 fully comp insurance (as a first car on either 280 or 500 - they would cost the same) as a classic policy and maybe 4-5k km / year.

Obviously in my case maintenance is only low too. I've come across figures from those magazines before and they are for keeping a new or nearly new car in top condition with all servicing done as scheduled by a full main Mercedes-Benz dealer. Not really comparable with luxobangernomics...
