Right, I can bite my tongue no longer and have to say something.

What is with the amount of rubbish threads lately?
I understand that there are a lot of new people to the board that have just started in college but come on people. Threads on wordcount and coversheets????
Everytime I see one of these I feel ike screaming
    ASK THE FúCKING DEPARTMENT!

A bit of common sense would go a long way in here. There are a few people who seem to depend on this board to make all their college related decisions for them and quite frankly its sad and annoying to see yet another thread on "oooh what subjects should i pick?" "what electives should i do?" yadda yadda yadda

Sorry guys, I just feel like having a rant today and I'm sure there'll be plenty of you out there who don't agree with me so go ahead......unleash the fury :p

I started the thread on the wordcount. I found myself in an awkward position and I thank the people who took the time to help me out. I appreciate it.

I'm not going to unleash fury. I just find it pretty sad that you have to have a go at someone purely for asking for a bit of help. If you don't like what you're reading, read something else.

And by the way, what defines a good thread?

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 7,486 ✭✭✭Red Alert

Fine you asked for help - I help out with computer stuff generally because i actually know some **** about it and it doesn't put me out to answer it. you should probably have asked in the computers forum though, or a quick search on ms word's (excellent) help would have told you where it was - PI and After Hours suffer from a lot of random crap being put there by people who don't choose the right forum first. openoffice.org is free and also has great help files.

The electives thing is getting tiresome - let's sticky the best one and ban further threads about it. either choose electives you like or are good at or choose randomly - in the end of the day very often it really doesn't matter. if people actually read previous threads the same crap gets discussed about elective options again and again.

Maybe MNG if you actually came out with it instead of sitting on the fence and attacking peachy we'd have more interesting threads - hell at least Sangre makes the place interesting to read from time to time. for one i commend peachy for making a point and i'll be buying her a drink at the next beers. :D

Could this thread not be posted where it wouldnt bother anyone? Whats the point in having a UCD forum if you cant discuss your options and look for advice?
And for the record the college is so f**ked with this modulisation fiasco that its hard to get a straight answer from anyone in student services. In an environment where most fesheres dont know anyone it helps to hear from other student who may be in the same position.

Or just flood the place with homogenous threads about orange faces and how much we hate UCD..... oh wait http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=470

I'm not suggesting that all threads on here are crap or should follow a certain form. What I am saying is that lately there have been quite a number of threads on the same topics and many of which have been discussed before. As Red Alert suggested, they get very tiresome and perhaps a sticky would be in order.

Things like Blackboard, exam results, word count and essay cover sheets are all things that can be dealt with elsewhere. And asking about a particular type of computer software and its functions is a hardly a UCD issue, now is it?

MNG, I'm not having a go at anyone in particular. I was making a point, and judging by the responses so far there are a few others who agree with me.

I always use Google as computer illiterate as I am. I tried to find a way to download a word count but I could not find anything to do with Windows XP so I thought I'd ask people on UCD Boards considering a word count is important to students who, like myself, write essays. Having browsed through some previous threads, I'm hardly the first person to pose such a query. For example, these threads:

    "Accessing gmail with thunderbird"

    "MSN messenger"

"Anyone else notice this?" (which was to do with computers)

    "Laptop advice"

Now Red Alert, none of these threads bother me yet I should point out that it was MY thread that was singled out for scrutiny. As I said, I've no problem with people posting queries that are relevant to the life of a UCD student.

Why should I? So then I become the bad guy?

I don't commend her. I think she has been petty.

Why should they be? Blackboard, exam results, word count and essay cover sheets are relevant to the life of a UCD student.

And asking about a particular type of computer software and its functions is a hardly a UCD issue, now is it?

It's as much a UCD issue as posting about drinking exploits outside of UCD. Computer software that is essential for my essay work is, to me, a UCD issue.
MNG, I'm not having a go at anyone in particular. I was making a point, and judging by the responses so far there are a few others who agree with me.

You mentioned the word count thread which was mine as part of your 'rant'. As for people agreeing with you, so what? Is that what this thread is about? A backslapping exercise?

Some people disagree with you as well.

Live and let live is what I say. We don't need UCD Boards to go all dictatorial and become full of censorship.

Sorry PP but I really cant seem to understand why you must read every thread posted and be forcefully bored by reading every reply one by one. How about read the title and if you dont like it , dont read it.

Things like Blackboard, exam results, word count and essay cover sheets are all things that can be dealt with elsewhere.

I disagree. Blackboard, exam results questions etc are unique to UCD so the best (and only) place where they should be asked is the UCD forum.

Yes Blackboard is a computer issue, but asking a Blackboard question in the computer forum will get you nowhere as few would be familiar with the UCD setup.

UCD has an academic and a social side to it. I think the forum reflects both sides.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,894 ✭✭✭Chinafoot

    LOL!! :D

A back-slapping excercise! It was a point of issue that I have had with the board. I merely brought it out into the open. The fact that people are agreeing with me simply shows that it is also an issue for them.

I didn't expect you to agree at all MNG. In fact I could have written your response for you

All I am saying is that more often than not some of the "UCD issues" posted here on certain subjects are often things that can be easily sorted out by heading to the relevant department.

And also MNG, I hate to break it to you, but this thread is not about you. Your wordcount thread was simply the first example I saw when I opened the forum. You may see it as a UCD issue, I do not. I simply pointed that out.
You can call me petty if you like MNG. I would expect no less.

Many people on this forum know you in real life so I hardly think the fact people have *high-fived* you means people care. Furthermore, plenty of people have disagreed with you. What does that mean? Differences of opinion I guess. Should we censor out the ones you don't like though?
I didn't expect you to agree at all MNG. In fact I could have written your response for you

Of course you could. That's why you mentioned my word count thread. You wanted to illicit a response from me.
All I am saying is that more often than not some of the "UCD issues" posted here on certain subjects are often things that can be easily sorted out by heading to the relevant department.

In your own words this was a 'rant' and I see it as a rant at things which are quite relevant to the life of a UCD student.
And also MNG, I hate to break it to you, but this thread is not about you. Your wordcount thread was simply the first example I saw when I opened the forum.

Why bring it up at all? People who posted on that thread were respectful as I was to them. I got helped out without any fuss and then you bring up this thread of mine as a way to vent your frustration at boards. And you say it has nothing to do with me?
You may see it as a UCD issue, I do not. I simply pointed that out.

You didn't 'simply point out' anything. This whole thread was a rant and was designed to be inflammatory and hurtful which I'm pretty sure is not allowed on this forum ironically.
You can call me petty if you like MNG. I would expect no less.

If you single me out on this forum you can expect I will defend myself.

I haven't been posting on this forum for the last week or so because of excessive spam, flaming/bullying, muppetry and inept moderatorship of this forum and this thread reflects everything of what's wrong with this forum in recent months.
What is with the amount of rubbish threads lately?
I understand that there are a lot of new people to the board that have just started in college but come on people. Threads on wordcount and coversheets????

Yes I agree with you that there are quite alot of silly threads like the one mentioned but for god sake you don't have to specifically name the forums as that will only upset people and has.

A solution to this problem could be overcome by a general Q&A thread made stickied.

If the lack of ''exciting'' threads annoys you that much why don't you come up with an idea for an intellectually stimulating thread yourself instead of criticising other people's threads?
A bit of common sense would go a long way in here. There are a few people who seem to depend on this board to make all their college related decisions for them and quite frankly its sad and annoying to see yet another thread on "oooh what subjects should i pick?" You are criticising people for coming onto this forum asking for advice from fellow students about VITALLY IMPORTANT aspects of their college life. Knowledge and advice from your fellow students whether you know them or not is absolutely priceless. I've got alot of great advice from people on this forum on an array of matters which has helped me greatly. Saying that threads like those aren't wanted sets out a bad precident from this forum. Threads like those I find far more interesting and stimulating than the likes of ''what's your favourite bar'' etc.

Steph I'm not having a personal tiff with you I find your post reflects exactly whats wrong with the forum lately. IMO there's a bad atmosphere recently. It appears that people don't have the ability to debate a post and take up to resorting to insulting the poster. There's a hell of alot of spam, yes we all spam at times but there's some posters who rarely contribute anything of substance to the forum and this is to the detriment of the forum IMO.

No one should have any fear posting anything be it big or small, as long as it's to do with UCD and no one should be ostricised for what they write.

    Harmony folks... harmony :)

I have to agree that it's gotten pretty boring lately, haven't really found I could post on any of the threads we've had in the past while. Maybe when people settle down at college a bit though it will get back to normal? It could be just a start of year thing like. Anyway good idea whoever suggest a sticky general Q&A thread, we could do with one general thread incorperating all UCD computer queries, general UCD queries ect and a second for people who want to talk about various Arts subjects/electives, cos there's loads of them too!

i'd certainly do one on engineering as well as the unofficial guide to the ucd computer system

what the hell? people post threads on boards because other people might have had a similar problem and they could help them. why is it a big deal? just don't post in the thread if you can't help. it could take ages for the department to email back, sometimes you can't get through on the phones, and not everyone is in college, so they can't walk up to the department and ask. this way, lots of people see the thread, more often than not someone has had the problem before or knows the solution, and the OP can find the answer at their leisure when they return to boards.

tadahhh! -- not a big deal.

PS. those "O RLY" "YA RLY" pictures rock :)

Ok, well I get banned from the place for a few days and suddenly all hell breaks loose... Coincidence? I Think Not!!!

Anyway, while I appreciate that UCD students sometimes have questions about their courses, wordcount (huh? What the f**k was THAT doing in our forum?! Surreal), cover sheets (again, huh?), and laptops (ok, that's far enough, what the f**k is going on).

See the point I'm trying to make? (In a roundabout way, granted)

There is no need - repeat. NO NEED - to post this sh*t in the UCD forums.

Unlike Peacheh I don't mind whether there are or aren't interesting threads, just so long as they are relevant and, more importantly, neccessary to UCD students.

Come on ppl, you can find out about blackboard, essays, electives etc from other ppl. You know, the ones away from you computer screen. Or are you too scared to ask a question directly to another human being, preferring the glorious anonymity of boards?

Come on ppl, grow up. You're in college now.

Ahh your confusing "personal abuse" with "Disagreeing with your posts" again old zaney boy.

The quality of threads here has indeed decreased not only recently but over the last 2 months. Its pretty much plummeted into what it was like when I started modding here.

Then again, last time i decided to cut out all the nonsense i was criticised for doing so.

I have to say you've changed [link=http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=2782834&postcount=15]your tune[/link] slightly. Silly threads should just be ignored then?

I've taken action in cases of abuse, even when you aren't (believe it or not your not the only one who gets a bit from time to time) around.

Sure I've been patient with some of the good contributers, because I've seen that the good far outways the bad.

If i decided to take the hard line zane, you'd have been gone long ago.

If you guys want me to take a hard line, thats fine too. Its your board after all.

Some of us being in college have hectic lifestyles and would like an answer in a short space of time.

This forum allows for that. I don't see it as a bad thing. I like the fact that stangers are willing to help others out.

We had a thread on this forum, written by Zane, that was about the lonely lifestyle of a first year Arts student. I think we all benefitted from that thread.

Thank goodness we didn't have some pedant come on to whine that it belonged in the Personal Issues forum.

Here's some advice on anyone else who wishes to bash me and my word count thread. If you think the quality of psots has gone down...POST UP AN INTERESTING THREAD.

Don't piss and moan about other threads instead. Show some class and some f*cking tact.

That is completely different, and if you can't see that then you're wearing blinkers. Good luck with such a myopic point of view. Zane posted that thread because there was NOWHERE ELSE he could go. Nobody else he could talk to within the college about it (with the possible exception of UCDSU.net, and that's hack-central). Put simply, we were the only ppl he could talk to about it, and to find out if we had similar experiences to his. Which we did. Word count? Cover sheets? Huh? What possible analogy can you draw between them and Zane's thread?

    Honestly, I'd like to know.
