Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Hello all,

I thought it would be benificial for us to build a database of VDSL line stats and speeds we are obtaining.

I think it could help some people establish if their lines are of poor quality and try and get something done about it.

Its also a bit of fun if you are into that kind of thing.

For the sake of keeping things tidy I propose we could set out the data as follows. I will use a real site I look after as an example and will be adding more when I get time.

    7ugkiZv.jpg
    2775469701.png2775473005.png2775476037.png

    Approximate distance to Cabinet = 700 - 800 Meters
Connection to the Modem = 50cm Cat6 (single pair used) from line point of entry into building to NTU.

Using http://www.speedguide.net/dsl_speed_calc.php as a rough guide my line stats suggest I am 1484 Meters away from the cabinet......

I think there is something wrong with the line somewhere.

"Total Attenuation: 18.6 dB 15.8 dB"

That seems way too high to me at that distance.

I will post a site soon with a similar distance to the cabinet so you can compare.....

This is all assuming that the line to your house is not going across town before it gets to you from the cabinet of course.

    Site with Vodafone.

Was on 50Mb package. Router reset it self and put the customer on the 30Mb package.
    tdGHbwp.jpg

I called Vodafone and told them, they looked at the line stats and said 70Mb would work. They changed the profile and 5 minutes later.....

    kFXyk2W.jpg

I forgot to save my speedtest results but it was around 68Mb down and 15Mb up. Fantastic connection.

Distance to the cabinet 150 - 200 Meters

Not much access to advanced settings on the magnet router.

    2.1 Type VDSL
    2.2 Status Up
    2.2 Uptime 0 days 8 hours 16 mins 35 secs
    2.3 Line Rate (Down / Up) 71678 Kbps / 20479 Kbps
    2.4 Noise Margin (Down / Up) 21.3 dB / 14.1 dB
    2.5 Attenuation (Down / Up) 6.2 dB / 1.6 dB
    2.6 Power (Down / Up) 12.4 dBm / -18.2 dBm

Considering I was worried my line was long. I am needless to say, happy. Also, I saw on the installers equipment that the max sync was about 137 m/bit down and 40 m/bit up.

Hi, how do you know how far away you are from a cabinet? I have no idea where my nearest one is. Is there a site to check?

I do actually have the cabinet to myself. I'm the first person on it. I've also chained it up so nobody else can be ruin my beautiful stats & download speeds :)

I wonder how much speed I'm likely to lose!

I think we are seeing a pattern now......

Eircom are for what ever reason holding back on the up load speed....

Just as a side update, the eircom routers are awful! Iv had problems with all of them at sites I look after

TpLink are coming out with a vdsl router for the Irish market by the end of the year, can't wait.

I do actually have the cabinet to myself. I'm the first person on it. I've also chained it up so nobody else can be ruin my beautiful stats & download speeds :)

I wonder how much speed I'm likely to lose!

They are great stats - it'll be worth keeping an eye on. In theory, if they don't contend traffic you should maintain a good service. Maybe the only thing that could affect you in the long term is cross talk from other users coming online on the same subloop.

Hi, how do you know how far away you are from a cabinet? I have no idea where my nearest one is. Is there a site to check?

Actually I am happy with that because since that I really have the 15Mbit upload. It looks like initially they set up the max what the line is capable for, and later they change to the ordered speeds.

Distance to my nearest cabinet is ~700m but this seems slow for that distance. Also, when Eircom rang to upgrade us they said the line was prequalified for 40Mbps. Anyone know if this is normal?

Man, you could get much-much more:

Attainable Net Data Rate: 56.771 Mbps 146.140 Mbps

If I would you I would call immediately my ISP and start to complain. Your modem is synced up at the moment to 24/2, while your line is capable for 146/56.

Only thing about this that sucks is too low upstream and modem's wifi.. Since I'm getting ethernet, I would find 60/20mbit pack (or more) usefull.

Next month ends my contract for this. Mind you add some example about what to complain? :D

You should tell them that you ordered 70/20 or 50/15 (based on what you have), and your modem syncs up only to the fraction of that speed. That is a wrong profile, they should be able to sort that out in seconds remotely with a few clicks.

It's a big improvement, but I can't really say I'm blown away by the speed of it. The ping's a lot nicer, and it's a respectable speed, but I'm about 550 meters from the cabinet or more. There was a closer cabinet, but I'm not connected to it!

It's OK, but I can't see UPC breaking out in a sweat over the speeds.

I wonder will vectoring really make much of a difference.

~300m from cabinet. Rang vodafone to try and get the profile upgrade to 70mb but they said it wasn't possible at the minute.

Happy with this though... router seems fairly ****e in terms of range and i'm lucky to get 20mb on an iPhone depending what part of the house i'm in but i've powerline adapters taking the signal to my main PC upstairs from the hall downstairs so that allows me to get this kind of speed...

Just got it installed couple of hours ago and super delighted with it. I have actually managed to hit 71 with cat/6 cable which is super. Not to mention the upload speed haha.

what package are u signed up for? 50mb? as the profile should be 50/20 not 50/15 with a line attenuation of 5dB down you should be synced at 70mb tbh you might also want to remove your ip addy ;)

"Capped" by Vodafone at a constant 28Mbps (allegedly) download speed.

SG DSL Speed Calculator estimates I'm 891 metres from the cabinet (but as the crow flies it's only about 150 metres according to Google Maps) and should be capable of 42Mbps. Annoying.
