Tickets cannot be purchased for this event, but...

Ennio Morricone will take part in a public interview and Q&A on Sunday July 28th at the Light House Cinema, Smithfield. The Italian maestro will discuss his extraordinary career as a film composer and receive a Volta Award from Jameson Dublin International Film Festival in recognition of his extraordinary contribution to film.

Morricone’s first ever public interview in the Republic of Ireland is an unmissable opportunity to hear the composer discuss his astounding achievements with Sir Christopher Frayling, a British writer and critic who has written at length about the master’s work and is also the author of the definitive biography of Sergio Leone.

Anyone know about parking? The weather look ok from RTE's weather forcast
Friday and the weekend will remain fairly warm in most places, with light to moderate, mainly southeasterly winds; there will be a good deal of dry, bright weather each day but showers will occur from time to time, with Sunday likely to have the most frequent shower activity. The early days of next week will bring further showers or more prolonged spells of rain; it may be quite windy at times also and it will feel a good deal fresher.

Me again - thanks for the info on JJ Kavanagh bus etc. Still trying to gauge if this concert on Sunday will be 2 or 3 hrs - don't want to miss any of it necessarily to get bus/train home.
Anyone - that has seen him in Concert before - can you advise - concert duration ????

I've seen him twice before and AFAIR it was roughly 2 hours if not less.

Doors open at 4.30 I heard, does anyone know what time it actually starts?, rumours of Cinema Paradiso showing before concert...If Ennio comes on at 8.30, it should be over by 10.30 (there is a 10.45 curfew)

We are travelling a good distance and so trying to figure out if best to eat before concert? Hard to know what to do as nobody seems sure what is happening................If Ennio comes on at 5pm, it would be over 7.30, plenty of time for dinner etc

    Can anyone clarify?

    hi

you would have time to get out of the venue and get a LUAS back into town from Heuston Station after the gig, considering it ends at 10.45pm.

It takes about 10 minutes to walk briskly out of the venue and onto the road that leads to Heuston Station, so if you opted for the JJ Kavanagh coach to Limerick from the Convention Centre at 12.43am or Georges Quay at 12.45am, you'd have time to get it.

The only issue is that the LUAS would fill up real quick considering the crowd from the gig.

I'm not sure what time the last LUAS is from Heuston Station into Bus Aras, but there's usually taxis parked along Heuston Station anyway, if you missed the last LUAS into town.

Does anyone know if there is a dress code for the concert? I've never been to an outdoor concert by composer so I'm not sure.

  • Registered Users Posts: 281 ✭✭Buyingcar2012

Ive never been to a gig in Kilmainham before- Is the venue mostly grass? It probably will be muddy if it is.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 507 ✭✭✭argentum

first of all there is no dress code..it's Ireland dress for 4 seasons in one day and you should be ok
The ground around the seating area is grass as is the food area but the seats themselves are normally on white plastic matting to even out the bumps.

What's the story with parking? Also not sure if I am going to Cinema Paridiso as I am not sure how it will play out in the sun also I am not sure if I could take all that Sax and Violins.

I hope Cinema Paradiso, and the whole gig, plays out on a fine July evening. It's going to be incredible. I'm a bit apprehensive about what the weather will be like. Fingers crossed a thunder storm won't break, although the soundtrack to one could be awesome.

    Ticketmaster doesn't say much:
    Parking
Parking is available at various locations close to Royal Hospital Kilmainham. Check back for updates over the coming weeks.

Have to say that to me i left a little bit disappointed with the choice of music played.I know its not a greatest hits tour even though the posters listed a lot of music that just wasn't played.Gabriels oboe was just thrown in without even a pause for a round of applause. But for me, for him to play two pieces to finish the night that had already been played was unforgiveable. If he's managed to write the score for over 500 movies/tv shows the least he could do is not repeat 2 songs in less than 20 minutes.I could live with him walking off all the time at the end only to turn around and come back on but not the repeats.
I'm going again tomorrow hopefully he plays a different set like Bruce :D

His encores nearly always feature pieces from the main setlist. No surprise there. Tonights setlist will be identical to last night I'd say. What popular pieces from the posters did he not play?

A bit harsh, I was there and thought it was a magnificent achievement arranging music for a 100 piece orchestra and a local choir that had not sung with him before. I dont know what you were expecting from a man at 84 years of age! Tonight will be the exact same except wetter, so bring a mac. We were to the left of the stage and initially I was dissapointed because of the sound of the generator, but that soon was forgotten when the sound levels on stage went up. A truly wonderful night, never to be forgotten. As for parking I parked around the corner from the main entrance and was in the local pub in Ballinasloe by 12! The film started around 6:15 and Ennio came on around 8:35 and finished after 4 encores at 10:30.

I bought a programme on Saturday and it includes a single set list for both nights. On Saturday, Morricone followed the set list exactly. As noted in some other posts, he repeated two of the items for his encores. This suggests to me that the Sunday concert will be identical.

I thought the concert was magnificent. I was familiar with about half the pieces played. The ones I did not know were brilliant and I intend to get the recordings asap. The orchestra and chorus were outstanding. I can understand that even a group of musicians as large as this one would have developed a tight ensemble having played this repertoire many times. However, I was particularly impressed with the Dublin Gospel Choir who blended in so well with the orchestra, even though they can't have had much time together for rehearsals. Individual musicians were superb and it's hard to single any of them out for particular praise. I must mention the soprano Susanna Rigacci though. She contributed her wordless vocals to some of the pieces, notably Ecstasy of Gold. That number alone was almost worth the price of admission. The performance was far better than the original and brought the hairs on the back of my neck to attention. I was delighted when he played it again during the encores. Overall, the sound was brilliant, with every instrument and voice balanced in the mix, not too loud or too soft.

It's true that, with repeats in the encores, the concert lasted only about 90 minutes. But for me it was worth it to hear the world's greatest living film composer in such terrific performances.

The rain stayed away last night. The seating area has a covering over the grass. There is large open space behind the seats with lots of food and drink stalls. If it's dry you could sit on the grass there as the sound carries right back from the stage and there are large screens displaying close-ups of the musicians.

I saw loads of people taking pictures, also saw people sitting on the grass in the grounds of Kilmainham so if you know of anyone looking for a budget evening get them to go along to it. There were people sitting beside the barrier as you weren't asked to produce tickets until last minute and they could hear everything perfectly but just couldn't see anything. I'd love to go again and sit there.

Absolutely loved it, despite the rain that making part two of Cinema Paradiso rather miserable. Amazing set of songs, diverse and dynamic. Thought the choir was being oddly underused for a majority of the gig, but then boom, those last couple of songs were simply breathtaking (On Earth As It Is In Heaven was bordering on the transcendent). Perfect length as well IMO, even if a few personal favourites didn't make the cut. Who cares when the chosen songbook is as pitch perfect as the one here.

Really enjoyed the gig tonight. Couldn't have asked for more really (well maybe better weather)! Deborah's theme was a standout for me but i've always loved that anyways. The good the bad and the ugly was deadly aswell,as was On earth as it is in heaven. There was a lot of really good pieces in it in fairness.

Someone was asking about was it ok takin pics. Yeah it was great-i was filmin away for a few of them anyways and seen a good few other people at the same. Thought Kilmainham was a great venue too. That was my first time bein at a concert there and would definitely go back.

I had a ticket for the show (been a fan for over 20 years), but couldn't make it as I'm abroad so someone else took my place.
Suppose I never will get a chance to see him live now.
    Glad it went well.

Went Saturday night and had mixed feelings. The sound was great where we were down in the seats in the last block just in front of all the food and drink stalls. What almost ruined it for me were people constantly walking up and down the aisles, and this wasn't just going to the bathroom. It wasn't a rock concert; why couldn't folk just sit still for 90 minutes, is it too much to ask?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,321 ✭✭✭sham69

Was there last night and the show was amazing.
I would have loved some tunes from the untouchables as I love that soundtrack but you can't suit everyone.

There were a lot of petty arguements last night when I was there, people asking other people to move their umberella's (which I thought were'nt allowed at all so didnt bring one). People wiping their seats whilst the movie was on and were asked to move etc.

The hike to the toiliet was a bit much so thank god I only went once.

It was an ideal location for the concert and one I will remember forever.

Deborah's theme and the ecstasy of gold were worth the entrance fee alone.

The orchestra were amazing and once the choir got going they sounded great.

All in all an experience of a lifetime and worth getting soaked to the skin for :)

Concert was amazing, gbtu was the highlight for me.

Didn't like the venue, was about as far from intimate as you can get unless that meant sitting closer than a Ryanair flight. Overpriced food and drink topped it off as well as the chaos trying to leave.

Beg, borrow or steal the necessary to get yourself to Verona, Italy to see them in a Roman amphitheatre (http://www.eventiverona.it/) There are still tickets for €80 and €46 left ...

I can understand how people could be awed by this show, but having seen Morricone in Belfast 5 years ago, the Dublin concert was a major anti-climax.

10,000 people does not an intimate venue make, and the large minority of people who arrived late and just kept walking around was annoying. The seating was terrible - rusty folding chairs, cable tied together and jammed into tiny rows was bad but the terrible sight lines ruined it. If I wanted to watch a video screen and amplified music, I would have saved €250 and watched the DVD.
(Belfast was 2000 people in an acoustic auditorium, raked seating, no video screens, minimal amplification and doors that were closed before the show started. Still plenty of drink and craic).
I enjoyed the music this time but it would have been so much better if staged in The Point. :(

    I agree.
Whilst the set he played was magnificent, I think he has a big enough back catalogue to allow him do a few different numbers for an encore.
Call me sentimental, but I would have loved to have heard Chi mai and he has other tracks that could have utilised the choir without reverting to stuff he has already played.

As some others have said the constant rattle of peoples footsteps (espeically heels) on the plastic matting as they were off to the toilets or for drink was irratating and if you were sitting up near the left you got the sound of the generators during times when the sound was low.

It was a pleasure to have witnessed and listened to a living legend, but it could have been even better.

I am not allowed discuss …

I wasn't at the Belfast gig, but, having seen Jools Holland play there, I can understand what you're saying, and I agree with you about all the rest.

Of course I enjoyed the music, and even really enjoyed the outdoor screening of Cinema Paradiso (one of my Top 5) but I was in the cheaper seats at the back, and, although it's not necessary to see everything, I walked up to the sound desk, and the sound and view were fantastic. We ended up standing there for the last piece and I was only sorry I didn't do it earlier.

In fact, I could easily have stood for the whole lot ('twas less than 1:45), if there had been a standing area (like what they have in the proms in London).

I could imagine that the Point, the Grand Canal or the Waterfront Hall would have been better venues alright.

I thought he was brilliant, I've loved his music for years and it was amazing to see it come to life on the stage. I only wish he'd done Gabriels Oboe as one of the encores as it was over too quick when he played it the first time.

The venue I thought looked nice but the seating was very close together and quite uncomfortable although having said that I'd have sat for as many hours as he would have played!! The only thing that annoyed me as others have said was the constant procession to the bar and toilets. I though it was very rude and annoying for people to have to keep standing up to let people in/out of their seats.

I'm seriously contemplating booking tickets to Verona, just think I have to see him again as once just isn't enough. I've seen footage of that venue in Verona and it looks great.
