Wuala is secure online storage, a haven in the cloud to store your files. You can safely access and share your files with friends, family, and co-workers.

good DropBox replacement with clients for Windows/Mac/Linux/Mobile

Standard account is 1GB, this can be upped by using a refferal link to 2GB, here is mine:
Get a 2GB free Wuala account

And when you have installed the software, go to Tools>Options>Storage, and enter the following codes, each of them gives you an additional 1GB:
    I-KNOW-DOMINIK
    I-KNOW-CAROLA
    I-KNOW-FABIUS
    I-KNOW-LUZIUS
    I-KNOW-THOMAS
    I-KNOW-JONAS
    I-KNOW-MARCEL
    I-KNOW-MARIUS
    I-KNOW-DARIO
    CONNECT-WITH-SUPPORT
    SKYFISH-IS-COOL

The total available storage is 13GB with all the coupons used.

Is there any advantage to Wuala over Dropbox, besides the extra free space?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,001 ✭✭✭fl4pj4ck

a huge one. DropBox files are visible to DropBox team and subject to being given free to US authorities upon request. When using Wuala all the files are encrypted using key stored on your computer and there's no way in hell anyone else would be able to acces it.

not to mention the fact that Dropbox only supports Windows, when Wuala have clients for PC/Mac/Linux/Mobile

Dropbox supports Mac, Android, Windows, IOS and Blackberry (may be more but they're the devices I use).

oops, might have been a while since I checked that, thanks for the info. nevertheless, with all that mess with licensing and their ability to look at my files I still prefer Wuala and SpiderOak

also recently Dropbox had a security issue, all the files were visible for everyone else (no kidding)

Do you think Wuala don't ever have any security issues? Dropbox has exploded over a very short space of time, and in terms of these kind of cloud storage offerings we are in very early days development wise. Also, any problems they have will more than likely go very public.

I'd have a lot more faith in Dropboxs security in the long run because they are big enough to have people dedicated to it now. They are making a big effort to making their T and Cs very transparent.

you don't understand the situation at all. dropbox stores encryption keys on Dropbox servers. if those keys are obtained by 3rd party, all your files are in danger. wuala and spideroak uses different approach and allow only you to be in possession of the encryption keys. it's virtually impossible to access your files by someone else

one more important thing: Wuala is an EU company and it's bound by EU Data Protection Act, whereas Dropbox is an US company subject to their stupid anti terrorist law.

they allowed EVERYONE to be able to access EVERYONE ELSES FILES. I don't see any logic in you talking about "faith in their security".

Regarding security.. Anything u want to keep secure shouldn't be stored in the cloud. Simple as that

I don't like the idea of my photos being viewed by everyone else. as Dropbox failed on that level, I just needed an alternative. I'm not after a military grade solution, just one that will allow me a peace of mind. wuala works for me and - most important - it's free

I'm not gonna get into a flame war over this, because I don't know much about Wuala's service. I'm curious though, if you lose your keyfile, do you lose all of your data? or does Wuala allow you to get your keyfile again?

In terms of the US / anyone elses anti terrorism laws, Wuala use Amazon s3, so who knows where your data is. It could be in any of amazons availability zones.

If I was gonna switch to any provider, I'd probably go with Amazons. I'm happy with Dropbox though - the chances are any bad stuff that happens with them will be out in the public domain pretty quick.

Finally, a very quick google gets me this:
    http://www.daemonology.net/blog/2007-10-21-wuala-willful-ignorance.html
    http://bugs.wuala.com/view.php?id=320

Nobody is perfect. The Dropbox issue was a clanger for sure, but cloud security has a long way to go in general.

Yes. You will lose your data as only you have the password.

Hmm, that person seems irked that 128-bit AES is used, not 192 or 256-bit. I can assure you, the difference is insignificant in terms of securing your data. AES-128 is perfectly fine for securing your data for a long long long long time.

His other questions are valid though (except the side channel attack one, that's OTT). I wouldn't really worry about the answers to them unless you had some seriously sensitive data you need protected. At the same time though, if Wuala are claiming to be the secure alternative to Dropbox, they need to answer those questions.

That issue appears to be resolved.

Out of interest, did u ever use dropbox? If so is there anything it does that wuala doesn't do? 12gb of storage would be handy, I've maxed out my 5gb on dropbox...

of course I did. most common stuff:
    - syncing "My Documents"
    - storing my filezilla library
    - storing files for Wamp/Xampp
    - uploading files from a webform to my Drobox account
    - make my most popular photos available online

So far Wuala/Spideroak (using both of them ATM) seem to have more functionality than Dropbox.

One thing I find excellent is the ability to create groups of friends and exchange files between users + simple messaging system.

If you click on details beside the amount of storage you have, they show the codes as having an expiry date. Does that mean that once they expire you lose that storage?

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,557 ✭✭✭GrumPy

Gonna give this a try. Don't like how the Dropbox terms of service changed. They claim rights to any files stored on their server. All my college work was up there. Cancelled when I received that update email.

They seem to expire in 3 months alright except CONNECT-WITH-SUPPORT which is 12 months.

So it will be back down to 2-3GB in October :(

I knew 13GB was too good to be true

Also as this is a service of Lacie, if you own a Lacie harddrive you can get extra storage by entering the serial number in tools/storage. Also remember if you have an Iomega hard drive, most likely there is a Lacie Drive in it, so try to enter the SN to get more storage.
