I think most of the experts agree that the dust visible on cars is indeed from the volcanic ash. Whether it's harmful or not is open to opinion but in such small quantities likely not.

We have had dust on our car over the last week, and this is normal under these type of conditions. The air has been very dry for the last few days which is typical of anticyclonic easterlies.

In fact, as far as easterlies go, there has actually been very little dust and haze compared to more continental sourced flows that sometimes envelop Ireland.

Ok I am due to fly to Chicago on Friday morning with Aerl Lingus,

how do you rate the chances and what events need to occur for this to go ahead?

volcano decides to go back to sleep or a change in airmass. ironically it is the good weather that is causing the problem.
if we had bad weather in ireland and england the flights would likely resume.

    2010 Icelandic Meteorological office

    Plume not being detected

    18.4.2010

IMO's radar near Keflavik has not detected the plume from Eyjafjallajökull since 08 o?clock this morning, which implies that it is below 10,000 feet (3 km).

the wind direction is set to change by friday to a south westerly flow, so things would look ok for friday, thats going by the initial forecast anyway :)

Hi spongebob I know nothing about this, but does this suggest air travel will be back by friday?

sorry for my ignorance Im just in a bout of nervous depression after realising the risk my flight may not leave

Ok and once they change is it all things go for planes? or will they have to wait a while? if you told me my flight would be delayed a day or two I wouldn't care just dont want it cancelled!

Well the plume is still there it hasn't stopped so don't be getting your hopes up.. you don't need a weather channel to tell you if its there or not you can CLEARLY see in the cams that there IS a plume!

well, no drastic change is forecast for this week.
however a change in the wind direction from the north to west or southwest would make a huge difference.

Right and is that something that is usually picked up in forecasts or something that could just happen all of a sudden?

it usually will be predicted, as forecasts in the three- four days range tends to be fairly accurate these days.

Looking at the latest webcam images it seems to have gone quiet

On the contrary, it is kicking off bad today:

The webcams don't show anything at all, the whole volcano is invisible due to mist/ash?

    Again, i see the contrary:

Great band paddy1. have you ever seen them live?

Nope unfortunately. "The Lotus Eaters" is probably (to me) one of the greatest vocal tunes ever. Lisa Gerrard's voice on that track proves that God exists! Pure, raw, unabashed emotion from the depths of soul.

yeah that's what i was thinking...there must be some serious plumes coming out to hide the volcano

yes you will be. even if we all have to blow together to move the ash way. but seriously a lot can happen in a week. the volcano could stop erupting. it could rain heavily in iceland which would also help disperse the ash. the winds more than likely over Ireland will have changed to a more favourable direction by next week. so don't give up hope yet!

have they changed the position of that camera?

Because there’s no volcano erupting anymore

Meanwhile, the Katla tremors are getting stronger

Note: Above link is for the bigger Katla volcano, not the one that's erupting right now. Katla is much more dangerous.

    Latest observations and projection

No meaningful shift in wind direction until at least 144 hours on the latest models. Mostly Northwesterly.

According to projections the ash should be over ireland now right?
I dont hear any word of it on the news though, and what can we expect if the ash cloud is over us, will it block out the sun, will it just look like cloud.
