Considering there are plenty of android threads, the other n900 thread seems to be more about ownership and apple has it's own subform. A thread for n900 or Maemo 5 stuff would be nice. Lets try keep it to just app's (Links, ratings, recommendations) Repos, tips and tricks and any cool stuff people have figured out. Let's not have another I have an N900 thread.

That's presuming the mods are cool with this and leave it be.

Remember folks, you use these repos at your own risk, myself, the mods, boards or anyone who ever existed is not responsible for what they do to your device if things go pear shaped.
*BE WARNED* some apps from these repos can brick your device.

    Nice idea TomTom...

Has anyone tried webtexter? Its very similar to cabbage(doesn't work on n900) which enables you to send webtexts via your n900. I'm with vodafone and currently they have international webtexts which has saved me a fortune because I've relations in Finland and Australia!

Currently Webtexter is in the Maemo Extras-testing catalogue which is not on your n900 by default. To get this catalogue follow these instructions:

    go to you application manager,
then click on application manager on the top of your screen,
    then application catalogues,
then click new and input the following:
    catalogue name: Maemo Extras Testing
    web address: http://repository.maemo.org/extras-testing/
    distribution: fremantle
    components: free non-free

press save and when you are back in application manager go to download and Webtexter should be down near the bottom.
This application was made by "Matrim" who's a member of boards.ie so big up to him for this application!!

    Enjoy!

TomTom can you edit your first post to give the extras-devel and testing warnings.

extras-testing might be ok for most people here but it's best to make sure that everyone knows that there is some risk in using it.

Any word when Webtexter is going to be offically released into the Extras catalogue?
Much development/test left? It seems to be going from build to test to build to test...

    http://maemo.org/packages/view/webtexter/

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,517 ✭✭✭matrim

To get to extras it has to be in testing for 10 days and get 10 thumbs up by testers. I've gone through the 10 days before but the most votes I've had is 4.

To get it to extras take a look at the testing criteria and vote for webtexter after you are happy it passes all of them.

Where do we got for the thumbs up?

I assume this is directed at me.

You can get the full info in these wiki pages
    http://wiki.maemo.org/Extras-testing
    http://wiki.maemo.org/Extras-testing/QA_checklist

But basically when you are testing a package in extras-testing, you make sure that it is ok against the QA checklist.

After you are happy that it works fine and has no blocking items you go to the package page, which can be found from

    http://maemo.org/packages/repository/qa/fremantle_extras-testing/

Then there is the option to vote up or down the application based on your testing.

You have to have an account on garage.maemo.org to vote on the application.

    Another tip.

As there is no native MMS on the N900 a community solution is in development. Details of it and the configuration needed for Irish as well as other providers is available from http://wiki.maemo.org/MMS

It's still in development so there may still be some issues and you have to connect to the Access Point manually but it does allow you to send and receive MMS relatively easily.

I'm having some fun with this app,
it allows for easy streaming from various tv stations worldwide
    eg Skynews
    http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=42848
NOTE installs from extras-devel , so care needs to be taken but does install cleanly.

Also for those running Firefox here's a link to the mobile version of add ons
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/mobile/

Unfortunately, I cant get it to work on my phone :(

Keep getting "Unable to Login to Provider" even though I use the same login details as I do when checking my account online.

Am a new switch to Vodafone from O2.

    Thanks

    Philip

Check the username and password again. Also note the first letter in the password field is auto capitalized in WebTexter

    Excellent, thanks everyone.

Was the autocapitalisation of the password field.

Didnt notice it since it changed to * very quickly

Any other app's people would recommend.

The phone has endless possibilities :)

    Thanks again

    Philip

Not sure how many work properly on N900 but there are over 300 app's games and the like. I am currently testing some.

Okay, i was just wondering if some N900 owners could help me out. I just realised that on my N900's native browser, when i enter a word into the address bar, as opposed to a web address, the browser searches google. All fair and well, they only trouble i have is that the search results and google are in french! Which is very annoying...and slightly confusing.

Now i did some investigating to find what address it was pointing to when doing these searches and i found it was this:
    http://www.google.com/m/search?client=ms-nokia-maemo&channel=unibox&q

I did this by opening the browser, and typing in
    about:config

And it displays a massive list of elements, there is a search bar at the top, type in "google" and press enter. It should return 4 results, the one i wanted was the one titled keyword URL.

Now i was wondering if someone could follow the above steps and copy in the link they have on there N900, provided it doesn't have the same issue i have...

    Cheers

A big thanks to matrim for the "Extended Call Log"
    Works great.

Webtexter working great too. Any more thought into allowing multiple accounts?

I've been busy lately so haven't had a chance to start developing it. I know how I want to do it but have to get the time to start it.

Downloaded VNC Viewer to N900 and Tight VNC to my xp laptop. Can take control of my PC via N900 - happy days. Still haven't figured out to do the opposite but I'll get there.

Other problem I have is that my N900 cannot see my WMP (Windows Media Player) on my xp laptop. It should as it's a media server. Funnily enough only when I have Orb running, the N900 sees Orb fine.

MussOrgsky - downloads the album cover art directly on your phone.

I have over 12Gb of songs, and after transferring from iTunes ended up with only two album covers. Very frustrating when driving along and trying to find some music (not that I would condone driving and selecting music :o ) This program allows you to search the internet to find album art directly from the N900.

    Excellent stuff.

wifi switcher is an absolute must.

Had my first day with my new N900 yesterday and was appalled by the battery life....today is going much better since i installed the app.

    Also cpumem-applet is very useful

    ...both in extras-testing

    sure does.

also .... simplebrightness is great for easy access to brightness control

gonna give the n900 a week before deciding whether to go back to my Hero. Anything that helps with battery consumption is a winner for me!
