    Hi my turbo went on my bmw and im wondering does anyone know of where i'd get a secondhand one cheap

    Reconditioned would be better than second hand as you would have no idea how many miles are left in the second hand one.

    Sorry to hijack this thread, since you guys seem to know about Turbos, can I add one to my 2004 325i?
    And if I do does that decrease my engine's life expentency etc..Maybe some urban legends for me to clear...

    Do *NOT* get a 2nd hand turbo - Chances are it'll pop

    Get yourself a new Garrett turbo for the 320d

    If your turbo failed and you kept the engine running, chances are oil has gotten into the exhaust and ruined the cat too.

    This happened my car before I bought it, it was replaced with a genuine BMW turbo and cat in 2004 (They changed the turbo's in Nov 203) under warranty

    Jan 2002 - Nov 2003 were prone to turbo failure. Mine is a Feb 2002, but buyer had receipts from BMW (I rang them to verify) that a new engine and turbo was fitted in July 2004. Sweet :D Think the inlet manifold went in it hence engine replacement

    Remember to change your crankcase breather filter in your BMW diesel engine. I think this was one of the reasons for turbo failure in these engines. Filter would clog, crank pressure build, bust turbo seals and bye bye turbo/cat

    I bought a recon turbo from http://www.midlandturbo.com/ for my golf Tdi. Its guarantied for a year and i've put 10k mls on it. Very helpful service and cost about 650quid all in delivered and all. Probably less now because of the weakness of the pound.

    Tips to keep a turbo sweet is:

    1. easy warm up
    2. Good clean oil
    3. don't turn off a hot engine, idle for a minute or drive easy for the last couple of miles of a trip.

    And on Diesels:
    4. Clean out the EGR valve at 60k, this is not usually a service item. Have heard that this is specifically relevant to the 320d.
    5. Keep an eye on the crankcase breather (mentioned by another post so i'll put it down)

    320d's are prone to turbo failure on the 150hp pre '03 euro 3 engine. Having said that they are prone to inlet mainfold swirl flap failure on pre '05 euro 4 engines too. Both can lead to total engine failure, especially the inlet flap failure. I was going to buy one but i think i'll hold off because of these problems. The basic engine is the rover 2L diesel btw.

    Probably better to sell your car and buy a 135i or 123d coupe if you want a beemer with a turbo. Cheaper in the long run really. I wouldn't buy an '04 325 with some turbo bodged on.

    Having said that I've heard of a 330i turbo conversion in South Africa, I think the 325i has basically the same engine with a different displacement. Try google anyway.

    You could be right. Rover used an L-series engine that was a perkins/powertrain built engine and had 115hp. I wouldn't say that that made it into a bmw tho although they put the bmw designated M47 115hp engine into the rover 75 and freelander. I think bmw engines are made by Steyr in germany.

    I am having the same problem with my 320 the turbo went on Friday. I have got a quote from a place in Glasnevin to do the whole lot for at most €1100 plus €150 to have the car towed. Does this seem like a good price?

    Turbo Technics are in the process of re-doing the seals on my Turbo on the 320d, gonna cost about £200 all in returned to me. Friend is doing the labour but it's still not gonna be all that cheap - in his words "A pig of a thing to get at" - lots of labour

    Do you know how may hours labour I should be looking at? Is there anyway of getting the part number? I've been told that there are different types of Turbo fro the 320? sorry for all the question but do you have a web address for the guys fixing yours?

    Hi guys. Do all standard 320D's have a turbo? I have a 2001 320D and I'm not sure if it has a turbo :P It has a lot of miles on it so I'm really hoping I don't run into this problem anytime soon

    Yes they all have Turbos. You're safe though as your car is a pre 2002 one. Yours will be 136BHP

    This also happened to me. I've a 2002 320d. GTD diesels in dundalk did the whole thing (inc service) for 1900€ over a year ago and car is running like new now. Was told I might need a new cat (€650 from BMW) but didn't bother. Car went through nct emissions test with out a hitch as oil burned out of cat after about 1000km. Labour intensive if cat needs doing as it is very difficult to get at on E46 models. (takes about 2 hours). The proper turbo is made by Bosch. Check out any Bosch resellers to save a few quid but bring it to a diesel specialist as most mechanics know more about petrol engines in my experience.

    Just wonder about the Breather Filter that needs to be changed. Is this the exact name of the part and does anybody know where I can get one?

    The proper turbo is made by Bosch. Check out any Bosch resellers to save a few quid but bring it to a diesel specialist as most mechanics know more about petrol engines in my experience.

    All BMW turbos are made by Garrett, Bosch don't make turbos. The breather filter is only available from BMW. If the oil burned out of your cat your cat is scrap.

    can anyone please help turbo just went on my 03 320d sport ive bein reading about it and it sounds exspense i was on the motorway and when i put tmy foot down bang a big puff of smoke and oil out the exhaust there is still oil in the engine i new it was the turbo i kive just outside dublin does anyone no the true cost of this please reply asap.:confused::confused:

    I had mine done before it blew so didn't do any damage...

    Refurbished my Turbo with Turbo Technics: £260
    Mechanic charged 450euro but that included a lot of other small bits (They're a b1tch to get at)

    You've probably ruined your cat too, depending on whether or not you stopped instantly when you saw the problem

    All BMW turbos are made by Garrett, Bosch don't make turbos. The breather filter is only available from BMW. If the oil burned out of your cat your cat is scrap.

    Since the NCT only tests smoke in a diesel I assume any problem with a cat could be solved using a sturdy bar shoved through the cat a few times.

    Between swirl flaps that fall off,weak turbos, and flywheels buying a 320d seems like a bit of a lottery.

    Had it only a few months when the turbo went, less than 50k km on the clock.
    It was under warranty so the dealer covered all costs.

    What kind of mileage are people getting out of turbos?
    Seems like this problem is rampant on 3 series BMWs.

    That's odd, BMW insisted that they solved the turbo issue in cars built after Nov 2003.

    It's not that the turbo's go naturally as such, just BMW didn't change the crankcase breather filter as part of their service schedule until they realised they made a mistake... Crankcase breather filter is now changed at every Inspection 2, I change it myself every 2 oil changes (so about 12k miles) - However the last one I got from BMW was the 'vortex' one which mean's theres no element to flog so should never need changing again - happy days as the element filters were about 40euro a pop (you got the whole assemble eventhough it was only the element that needed changing

    ive heard of it costing 1100 if tats the case then tats not to bad i heard of it costing up to near 3 i only hav the car a couple of months and was unaware to this lesson learned.:mad::mad::mad:

    the car has done 100 thousand miles and ive bein readin up on this all day if it hasnt gone before 100 thousand get it done rapidly its goin to a gagrage first thing in the morning ill post my qoute when i find out thanks all for the help:D.

    It amazes me that BMW's reputation survives these kind of failings intact. The were serious quality issues with early E30 and E36 cars, the BMW cooling system has always been one of its weak points (plastic water pump impeller FFS) the whole nikasil debacle, I am sure there are more, and now failing turbos. I am a fan of BMW's, well the older stuff anyway, but am I the only one who believes that their reputation for engineering excellence is a more marketing than reality?

    Why on earth would you get a turbo done if there is no need and it is functioning perfectly? A turbo should outlive the rest of the car if treated properly.
