What to bring to college

going to go to college in trinity hopefully, what should i bring with me? any suggestions?

You'll need to bring some crockery, cutlery and cooking equipment (only you can judge this; if you're good at cooking bring lots, if you're ****e, bring less). Don't bring too much though; not only is it heavy, it tends to get left on the sink to pile up during the week! I'd say bring 3 of each thing. Bring one or two "specialised" kitchen gadgets if needs be - but you can always borrow from other people on your floor. Also bring cleaning equipment (lots of tea towels, cleaning cloths, gloves, Fairy) and some bin liners, and as much food as you can rob from home!

For your room, bring bedlinen, towels, stuff like that, plus whatever ornaments/CDs/books you want. Don't bother with posters, they're not allowed (and will only make your room look like a prison cell anyway). There's internet access available in all the modern accommodation, so you can bring your own computer if you have one.

Oh yes, and bring all your clothes, you don't wanna be spending half your time in the launderette (or running home to mammy every Friday like my sap of a flatmate last year..).

Oh yes, and if you think you need it at all, get your parents to teach you how to cook, clean and generally look after yourself. There's nothing worse than living with stupid dumbass helpless freshers who don't even know how to cook beans without burning down half the kitchen. Your flatmates will thank you for it.

you know, working in cineworld is doing my cleaning powers a world of good. I can now get a bar closed and spotlessly clean in roughly half an hour/45 minutes - which means cleaning the apartment next year will be a doddle.

Show up determined to meet as many different people as you can in the first 2-3 months.

Get a book on how to remember peoples names and learn the techniques.

Do this successfully and remember their names and you'll probably have loads of friends for all your time in college.

Finally - audition for the freshers co-op - it's great fun.

Yeah, me too. Went about two months without asking someone their name after I'd forgotten. You can get away with it by being creative or you could do the whole "look at my ID picture, it's shite" and when they decide to show you their **** picture you can get a look at the name. It works sometimes (naive 1st years) and also means you don't have to pay attention in idle conversations and devote your thoughts to more pressing matters.

I'm absolutely terrible at remembering names too, max I can learn in a day is about two, and I have to meet the person again within a week or it goes out the window..

for your first week in college you will need the following:

2 bottles taquila (cheap)

1 crate beer (cheaper)

1 funnel (large)

1 1.5m piece garden hose

1 family pack of condoms (for putting on your head and using as water bombs, you wont be having any sex)

1 set swimming goggles (with anti-fog coating)

1 pair ladies stockings (dark)

1 cam-corder (with long range zoom)

1 pair handcuffs (sturdy)

1 loud portable sound system + music

1 gentlemans tophat (extra large)

that pretty much covers all eventualities for ones first week in third level education. oh yeah,obviously you'll need food, money, clothes and ID.

This is all good advice. Remember to bring stuff like a colander (sp?), a bottle opener, a sharp knife (for chopping veggies,meat etc) etc -which people often forget. Also, as a female who went to Trinity, the fashion quotient is pretty high so bring a variety of clothes, not just jeans & t-shirts. I was amazed how much girls in trinity get dressed up to go to college. Sometimes its like a fashion show.

If I could do it all over again, I would go out more & join more societies.
Also, do your shopping in Lidl (Moore st) & Aldi (Parnell st, also new one opening in rathmines) & cook as much as you can. its a good way to save money & not eat sh*te Buttery food.

Just wondering, what type of apparatus I'll need to connect my laptop to the tv point in goldsmith hall.

I was under the impression there's free ntl on campus (that seemed to be the way it was in the GMB) and I presume it's the same in Goldsmith. So would a normal WIN-TV usb card do the job or do I need a special "digital one". I'd also like to connect my laptop to my ps2 so could I get a card that does both?

Ian - you know anything about this?

the ntl in goldsmith isn't free, you have to pay, iirc within first 2 weeks of term
you should get info about it when you get your swipe

and its analogue, so it should work fine with your win-tv card i'd say...

How much is the NTL connection? IIRC in Halls it was about €130, is it the same on campus?

Oh yeah, in 1st year we had to pay (03-04) and then instead of reducing the charges in 2nd year they included the NTL costs, forgot about that

For a good hardware shop, try Lenihans on Capel St. - I'd almost guarantee that they'll have what you're looking for.

Incidentally, I threw one of those out two days ago
