Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

yeah ive a phobia of cats+dogs which makes it difficult walkin anywhere but i get through it by goin to the oppoiste side of the road

I just have the dog phobia, I believe it is called Cynophobia. I was attacked as one when I was a kid so that is really where it began. To make it worse I live in north eastern Thailand where packs of Soi (street) dogs roam around. They are typically starved, diseased and crazy from the heat. However I will avoid ANY dog. I can walk up my street and literally have an elephant walk towards me, I will casually walk around him but if I happen across a small dog asleep outside a house I will cross the street.

A tourist attraction here is to pose with a tiger in one of the tiger zoos. It wouldn't cost me a thought as everyone does it but if I see a Jack Russell I will cross the street.

    Phobia of being trapped, anywhere.

Bus, rain airplane, meetings, in traffic, in crowds, even when I have a drink I feel it it cause I can't jump in the car!
Severe anxiety when I attempts anything like it.
Completely changed my life for the past 10 years.:(

I'm just so afraid of sleeping in a house by myself, some are worse than others, but being in my dad's house in Mayo at night makes me absolutely terrified, I stay up drinking and watching the TV, listening out for any little sound. The last time I stayed there alone I vowed to never do it again after one of the lights went out in the room I was in at about 2 in the morning! Never been so freaked out

I have school phobia and it has been a problem throughout my entire life, now finally turning 18 this month and will have given up school for good. I dont pretend it is as bad as phobias can be because I can still function perfectly well around people and it doesn't make me physically sick. But still, it made my childhood needlessly traumatic

Mine is being trapped- claustrophobic and this seriously effects my life if I want to feel free to do the things I enjoy. I haven't taken a proper holiday in 10 yrs as I wont fly. I had a panic attack on the plane and on a bus. I started to panic driving on d motorway and had to pull in to catch my breath, it was pouring down and my car was fogging up, and this made it worse. I panic in crowds and if I go to the cinema I need to sit on the end seat so I have easy access.

A friend is asking me to take the plunge and fly to Portugal but it freaks me out when I think about it, yet will annoy me if i don't.... any idea how I can get through this?? I have managed short flight recently so am trying to stretch it a bit. The problem is I will be dreading it instead of looking forward to it... and thats half the fun or in this case problem!

I think my friend has it. He ask to remove tissue on the table when we eat at the restaurant. And he ask to remove all books, tissue, car service hanging etc when we driving a car. He can't touch money also. He can't even stand with my bag since I got tissue in it.

Anyone has the same problem? Can you share your daily life with no paper in it???

    Thanks

My phobia is aeronautical in nature. It's not the flying I have an issue with, it's the crash-landing. :(

ok but do you fly despite the phobia? Anyway I think a few valium and glasses of wine should do it...for me.. maybe!

you should be careful with a few valium could be a paradoxical reaction especially by adding alcohol to the mix

  • Registered Users Posts: 239 ✭✭rustopher

Sorry I didnt mean together... last time I just had 2 glasses of wine, but it doesn't mean will always be lucky. Would do one or the other, and if one doesn't work. Never found valium much good but maybe i just have a high tolerence to them and should up the dose... will ask a doc!
    But good to know...thanks!

Since forever I've always been scared of wind turbines. I'm not sure if there is a name for this and they don't really affect my life but I would be a bit freaked out and sometimes a little short breathed if I was driving and came upon a wind farm around a corner. I clearly remember driving around Tenerife and finding loads of them on both sides of the road.

im having the same problem with flying,i never used to be like this about it after being on loads of flights even long haul ones.in 3 weeks im leaving for canada on a 5 hour flight and im petrified even thinking about it,if they're was a boat to canada believe me i'd be on it.anyways i find a drink or two and valium helps settle the nerves a bit, usually im like a rabbit in the headlights, breathing rapidly ,nostrils flaring upon take off.

  • Registered Users Posts: 239 ✭✭rustopher

Good at least it doesnt stop you going places, like me. Am trying to book flight to the sun as I would like to see and feel the sun for a change and enjoy a holiday but you'd think I had to pull my teeth out... its such a chore to me and those I'm going on holls wit!!

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,391 ✭✭✭Justask

I've just cancelled a holiday due to flying.

I book the flight saying 'I'll be grand and then im fill with dread for the week/months leading up to it. Its just not worth it :(

I,ve used the 'fear of flying CD's, tried valium, tried wine...Ah well its a good job i love this counrty :D

  • Registered Users Posts: 239 ✭✭rustopher

But a life time of being stuck in this country and not having the same freedom to experience other countries and cultures, i need to get away just for a break! It didnt bother me for a while I just got used to not going anywhere but now I'm hearing too much about other peoples holls, people they meet, places they've been especially now people take off to oz, middle east and all those far away places....I just want a sun holiday in anywhere in Europe!!

I know what u mean about the dread and fear leading up to it...it should be excitment!

Social Phobia. Slowly learning to overcome it. It can make the simplest, everyday things seem harder than they should be.

I have had social anxiety disorder since about 12... It's awful I avoid everything and I always miss out on parties Abd then regret it.. It's affecting my social life aswell because I find it hard to speak to people and I can't look at them and also my voice goes all girly and it's so embarrassing! I can't walk by people either or I night have a panic attack but I've learnt to control then I feel like a fool and trapped lol! But seeing a councillor person in September... I think the source of it's bullying because that lowered My confidence And I think I got s fear of speaking to people incase they critisised me it's so stupid! I hope the therapy works because I just want to get on with my life.. Its sad too because loads of people see me on my own and try to be my friend but it never works because the social anxiety makes it all awkward

Does everyone have social anxiety lol? Anyway here is a wee test thing.

    http://www.socialanxietysupport.com/disorder/liebowitz/

I got 105 in the test and apparently thats very severe social anxiety. I don't think i have it that bad i think its severe because somedays its not that bad and some its awful but i'm not the type who can't go out of the house for months i'd die if it was that bad!

  • Registered Users Posts: 438 ✭✭allydylan

i got 80, which i think it pretty accurate

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,581 ✭✭✭Dante

    88 myself.

49 is my score, although low I would never do public speaking!! :(

i don't think the test is all that accurate, firstly it isn't all that long and it's in the internet it can only be so accurate

i also have a fear of large crowds, i used to know so much anymore, completely avoid large gatherings like festivals/parades and parties, oh god how i hated parties
i still don't like them but the fear as become a lot more manageable

I agree if i was you i'd just take 10 or 15 points off your score and that would be more accurate. Because apparently i have very severe anxiety, that is not true sometimes i have no anxiety and others i do but when i do it can be bad so its not really that accurate i just thought it would be interesting.

no it was, i think my score was pretty accurate, but just cos i feel it was accurate for me doesn't mean it will me for everyone

Naw i'm naw feared of flying are you serious! I've been in a plane for 6 and half hours if i was feared i don't think i'd even bother getting in the plane. Its good though because coincidentally my father is training to be a pilot (hes gonny fly about the place in his own plane just for sightseeing etc) and i can train from that. It'll be great being able to fly wherever you want whenever you want. What airline do you work for? Ryanair. bet you.

i have a fear of a plane crashing into my house. started around 2yrs ago, took zanax and lustral for around a year then got pregnant and stopped all tablets completely was fine for about 1year. the fear came back recently (when baby was 3months) its worse than before.used to only be at night now its all day im constantly looking at the sky if a plane flys over i have to watch it to see where it goes,i try not to look at the sky incase i see a plane and it spooks me. if a particularly loud or low down plane flys over my whole body freezes and i have a panic attack. ive convinced myself its going to happen and the fear is back because it now its time for it to happen! at the moment it CONTROLS my life. ive recently started taking xanax (which are doing nothing) and stilnoct to sleep (they do work but obv wouldn be taking the during the day) im rambling basically cant seem to find anythin similar on the net, has anyone ever had anything like this?? its runing my life i obv have an anxiety problem i am aware of that, doc suggested hypnotherapy, has anyone tried it and it worked??

    http://www.socialanxietysupport.com/disorder/liebowitz/

Got 106 guess im one awkward bastard!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,385 ✭✭✭Jemmy

LOL only got 10 in the test, don't have any real social phobias. The only one i did mark on it was the one I came in to post about.

Might seem silly to some but i hate public toilets! Id rather not go than use one even to the point where it would be uncomfortable, and if I'm out with my family my sister will just come in with me now or she will go first & give me an assessment of how scary she thinks they will be for me. We laugh about it but i will be properly freaked out walking in.

Also air ducts/vents, id walk around an area than go directly under one, feel proper weird over this one! No idea where it came from but they really freak me out. And when there's a tile missing in a shop roof & it just leaves a black hole!

    :(:(:(
