I don't think I'll bother with any of the new shows next year until I know they're being renewed for a second season and are getting positive reviews here on boards or from some of my other trusted tv advisors.
Most of them seem cack anyway - Gotham and Constantine are the two I'm excited about, but again, only if they get positive feedback and a renewal.

I really do not get people who say will not watch a show unless it goes for 2nd season if enough people do that they will be cancelled. If a new show comes on I watch it to see if I like it and if i do I watch regardless

Not true though for us Irish people watching US shows. Whether we watch our not is irrelevant to the US ratings which determine if a show gets renewed.

Yeah, networks should use different methods now to gauge interest, like for instance the number of tweets using an episode specific hashtag would be a good gauge.

I think they started measuring that recently but I'm not sure how much they take it into consideration.

Meh, if my viewing actually counted towards ratings, I'd be more interested in seeing shows I already watch like Brookyln Nine Nine, The Goldbergs, Agents of SHIELD, Chicago Fire and Chicago PD get better ratings and see them get 5+ seasons than watching new stuff that will probably get cancelled anyway.
But, I don't get a say either way, so no harm in holding off. It's a good enough 1 season show, I'll get around to it eventually...

I did a study in college recently on the impact on illegal downloading on TV viewing and the renewal of programs (or not). Most shows will rely solely on ratings and funding from stations to pay the bills, they can't be seen to view an illegal method of acquiring a program as proof of popularity directly, they will however use "anecdotal" evidence of the popularity of a show to push for better stats. Also, don't forget, networks don't really care how many people watch the show, they care about how many people (and their demographic) watch the ads, as product placement gets bigger and bigger, other methods of viewing will become more important, not really before that.

While Networks are looking at other media platforms the problem is that advertising companies aren't. Enlisted did really well on Hulu, DVDR, ect and Fox seemed to really be behind the show but sadly the actual live viewing figures were poor and attracting advertisers wasn't easy.

At the moment to measure content viewed on mobile devices they incorporate census-style data from third parties but they have been also trialing new technology for quite a while.

CW To Take Another Stab At ‘Supernatural’ Spinoff
Mark Pedowitz says the network will attempt to expand the universe "once more next season."

"We had six really good pilots this year. We felt that Supernatural [spinoff Bloodlines] just didn’t quite get there, though we do know that people would come to it based on what we saw that night," Pedowitz said. "I've already spoken to the creator and the studio. They know that we want to develop once more next season, a Supernatural spinoff. What it is and what it isn't yet is still in the air."

Trailer for Fox's Red Band Society.
It’s been a fortnight since Fox unveiled its 2014 schedule and trailers for its new series at its upfront presentation New York. Notably absent from the trailer list was Red Band Society, the hospital-set coming-of-age drama that stars Oscar winner Octavia Spencer and is based on the Spanish series Polseres Vermelles.

We understand it took this long to get clearances, so the network is releasing the first-look just now.

Quentin Tarantino Wants to Make a ‘Django Unchained’ Miniseries
Quentin Tarantino wants to unleash about 90 minutes of unseen footage from “Django Unchained” onto your TV.

The director told an audience at the Cannes Film Festival that he’d like to release a four-hour miniseries of his hit spaghetti Western, USA Today reports.

The 2012 pic earned him an Oscar for best original screenplay.
“My idea, frankly, is to cut together a four-hour version of ‘Django Unchained,’” he said on Friday. “But I wouldn’t show it like a four-hour movie. I would cut it up into hour chapters. Like a four-part miniseries. And show it on cable television. Show it like an hour at a time, each chapter.”

Django was a good movie but I'd be afraid that more mightn't neccessarilly be more and that. in the end, it'd detract from the movie.

Me neither but Fargo is a separate stand-alone series. Tarrantino is talking about doing a 'Directors Cut'of Django though. I'd feel a bit better if he wanted to do a stand-alone mini series based on the film.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,533 ✭✭✭don ramo

tarantino should make up his mind, he said in the same conversation that what film he releases in the cinema is his final draft, its exactly how he wants the film, he doesnt like directors cut or other added scenes, whats in the cinema is his vision,

but **** that, lets make a 4 hour miniseries of Django

The Refugees, a sci-fi drama co-produced by BBC Worldwide and Spain’s AtresMedia will star Natalia Tena (Game of Thrones, Harry Potter)
The Refugees will explore the impact on a small rural community after millions of refugees from the future travel back in time to seek shelter in the present.

The English-language sci-fi drama series will begin filming this summer before premiering on laSexta in Spain in the autumn.

I hope it eventually gets shown on the BBC.

ITV has commissionsed a new adaptation of Julian Barnes’s novel, Arthur & George, based on an intriguing series of genuine events in the life of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
Set in 1903, the three part drama will star Martin Clunes (Doc Martin) as the novelist and physician who created the detective Sherlock Holmes.

Conan Doyle recaptures his zest for life by pursuing and challenging a notorious miscarriage of justice. It is the case of George Edalji, a hard-working solicitor and the son of Hampshire vicar, Reverend Shapurji Edalji and his wife Charlotte. George has served seven years in Pentonville Prison for allegedly mutilating animals and sending threatening letters, a series of offences which have become known as The Great Wyrley Rippings.

Hulu Eyes New Season Of ‘Community
There is a glimmer of hope that there could be a sixth season of cult comedy series Community. I have learned that Hulu is in talks with Community producer Sony Pictures TV for more original installments of the show, which was cancelled by NBC earlier this month.

Sources stress that conversations are preliminary and it is unclear whether they would lead to a deal, but I hear there is will on both sides.

Law and Order: UK is to be "rested" after its star, Bradley Walsh, announced he was leaving the show.

Based on the long-running US series, the UK version began in 2009 with Walsh in the role of lead police detective Ronnie Brooks.

ITV said the final episode of series eight, to be broadcast on 11 June, would be the last "for the foreseeable future".

Walsh said he was leaving to "pursue other drama projects".

The star - who also hosts game show The Chase - was nominated in the best TV detective category at the National Television Awards earlier this year for his role in the police drama.

"It's been an absolute pleasure to inhabit Ronnie's Mac for as long as I have," Walsh said.

"Eight series is a wonderful achievement for everyone involved in the production. This has been one of the hardest decisions I have ever had to make.

"I hope one day to revisit him, but for now I'd like the opportunity to pursue other drama projects which ITV are developing."

He added: "I'd really love fans of the series, old and new, to watch the final episode to give the series a fitting and proper send off."

AMC Renews 'Breaking Bad' Spinoff 'Better Call Saul for a second season, Pushes Premiere to 2015.

AMC is ordering more Better Call Saul.

The Breaking Bad spinoff has been renewed for a 13-episode second season, the cable network announced Thursday.

“Production on ‘Better Call Saul’ is underway and we could not be more proud of nor more excited about the work to date. We join the fans in eager anticipation for this series and today we happily confirm that our initial ‘Saul’ order is for two seasons and a total of 23 episodes,” said AMC president Charlie Collier.

Originally slated to premiere in November, the hourlong drama has been pushed back to early 2015

That's a bit odd. Obviously the network likes the show, but why push back the premiere? From the sounds of it they want to piggy back off of Walking/Talking Dead, but that isn't really convincing about the strength of the first few episodes of the show.

At the same time if it launches in early 2015 during the traditional Network breaks it could get something of a boost due to the fact that there is so little else on.

Never even heard of it, quite the play, comes with a built in audience. Still think Hulu should have snapped it up, glad someone did in the end. Not a fan myself but nothung worse than investing years in a show not to get an ending.
