Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Sorry but entries are not accepted after the end of the "late late" period which was over at 0300h Wednesday. Don't forget that the main contest is based on best ten scores so missing one month is not a total setback for anyone.

I think Gurteen's -2.7c would be an excellent monthly min

Percentage of normal rainfall figures (against 1961-90 average) for the year so far up to the 14th April at each of the stations used in the IMT index:

    Claremorris: 80.8% - (265.4mm) - 1022.1 hPa
    Shannon Airport: 80.4% - (213mm) - 1023.4 hPa
    Casement: 67.5% - (128.5mm) - 1022.6 hPa
    Mullingar: 66.7% - (173.1mm) - 1022.5 hPa
    Oak Park: 57.4% - (128.2mm) - 1023.5 hPa

Drier than normal at all stations; significantly so in E and SE.

    Data Source: met.ie / Ogimet

Might be up to par by Thursday looking at the forecasts for the next 3 days. Over par in Claremorris.

April ( IIRC) is the driest month of the year...historically over the 30 year reference periods like 1961-1990 etc.

Rather late UPDATE on the second week of April (8-14) ...

IMT now at 6.8 after a week at 7.0 C

prec up to 82% of normal thanks to a week with 127% of normal

sunshine figures continue to miss a few data points but the trend seems upward, will estimate current reading at about 113%.

Valentia no longer reports sunshine hours as it's no longer manned. Not sure if that affects things MT?

That is no doubt the reason they are no longer in the Ag Report, but also Dublin has been missing at times when I've updated. Until this month, I have taken the six stations that report in the Monthly Summary, now I imagine it will have to be five unless they promote Knock to the chart (that would require having some normals available). I hope that nobody's sunshine forecasts are so finely tuned that this will all cause a problem -- meanwhile, I am ready to declare a winner in the winter forecast contest, as the period is now over. Winter meanwhile seems not to have gotten the memo.

These are the sunshine hours for Dublin Airport for this month, taken from the 06Z synops.

    DATE - HOURS
    1st - 6.8
    2nd - 0.0
    3rd - 3.0
    4th - 7.1
    5th - 11.8
    6th - 2.2
    7th - 3.2
    8th - 0.1
    9th - 2.2
    10th - 10.3
    11th - 9.2
    12th - 6.6
    13th - 6.1
    14th - 9.4
    15th - 7.0

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,175 ✭✭✭pauldry

Early days but it does look like April will only finish with an IMT around 7c

Rainfall will be slightly above normal maybe 120%

Sunshine around the 120 mark too

Min temp prob reached already -3c

Max will only be around 15c

    At least the sun shone!

Frankly Pauldry, none of those stats is good news :(

We are reaching the end of the period where night frosts will not cause crop damage. If we get a stiffy after this it will cause mayhem.

This third week update has a slight uncertainty factor as one station (Claremorris) was not in the daily Ag Report.

IMT now at 6.9 after another week at 7.0 C

prec up to 115% of normal after a wet week with 180% of normal

Sunshine estimated to be near 120%, the week estimated at 135%.

I have not been keeping track of the highest temperature but can't recall seeing anything much over 15 C.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,783 ✭✭✭Joe Public

I think the 7th had the highest temp of 14.9C at Shannon. We may have to wait until the last day for the highest temp something like 17.9C:)

Fourth week update (22-28 April) ...

IMT now at 7.1 after a week at 7.34 C (With the second digit I am indicating just how hot it has been) :( ... This can only change marginally now which means "winner winner chicken dinner" for your host (at least on this category, not so much otherwise).

prec up again to 123% of normal after a wet week with 146% of normal, this would have been higher if not for a nearly dry week at Claremorris and Malin Head, some other stations ran 200-300 per cent. Also the monthly summary does not use Gurteen or Dublin which were both high. Anyway, this will clearly take another boost in the last two days.

Sunshine estimated to be near 112%, the week estimated at 90%. This remains a bit of a mystery tour with all the estimating and the sunny start to Sunday ensures a similar outcome for 29th-30th but I would only "guarantee" this to be some numbers with a percentage sign to follow.

There was a really solid effort to undercut the recorded monthly minimum the past two nights, don't think it quite came off. But I think we are stuck with the 14.9 now or close to it.

Look for scoring on Tuesday followed by bitter recriminations.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 326 ✭✭K_1

Sunshine stats in the future could be a bit watery (excuse the pun :P) from now on given that there will only be three stations reporting from this summer . . .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,175 ✭✭✭pauldry

Maybe someone shud write to met eireann and tell them to install campbell stokes recorders beside all the NRA temperature and rain thingys?!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,548 ✭✭✭Harps

Had a quick look through the Ogimet data and Malin Head has only recorded about 20mm of rain since the 10th of March during the daytime hours of 0600 and 1800, impressive stuff considering some parts of the country are near 200% for the month.

Also, Finner hit 15.7C today so comfortably the new high for the month

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,584 ✭✭✭✭M.T. Cranium

Final results for April, scoring already done largely in advance, just had to tweak the numbers when I got the official stats:

    IMT 7.0 (from 7.04)
MAX 14.9 (the 15.7 at Finner not eligible apparently, scoring would be same, except that redsunset scored one extra point with this value, his guess 15.0)
MIN -3.0 at Casement and Gurteen

PRC 131% (required "mercy rule" as our highest forecast 111% :o )
SUN 113% (turns out that Valentia still has data, just not being reported until end of month perhaps? ... we'll see how this works out in May)

    max 8th Easter Sunday Dublin -- 11.6

Rank for average (at end of each row) is your best comparison for the eventual contest standings, if you have missed any months. Entries are ranked for total score, which is our second award at end of year.

Congrats to rameire, H2U and Jerry S for leading so far.

Maybe the sunshine figure was the average before Valentia became automatic (as that only happened during the month)?!

Another disasterous month on my part anyway.

Once again I thank all of my family at the gorilla enclosure at Dublin Zoo.
I cannot foresee my streak running on any longer.

The question was raised about Finner recording 15.7, and this not counting ... my practice is to consult the Monthly Summary and take whatever they say for the monthly extremes (on page one) ... in the past, they have counted Phoenix Park on one similar occasion, discounted it on another, discounted Moore Park last February, and now this situation.

I don't know what their rules are, but my rules are to go with their decision, mostly because it avoids extra work and arguments, two things I try to avoid as much as possible.

In this particular case, it made almost zero difference to the scoring because everyone but redsunset was receiving help from the mercy rule without which most of us would be looking at about half the number of points we actually received.

There is, of course, always the possibility of an error creeping into the Monthly Summary although I have a high regard for the clerical standards of its authors, having done my own fair share of technical publishing over the years.

While on this general subject, my procedure will continue to be to take the data shown for precip and sunshine, not worrying about how or where it was obtained -- if they publish it, I use it for validation.

No problem, I am surprised to learn how fast evolution takes place, or was it that your family went in the other direction?

I emailed met.ie and queried Finner's 15.7C and below is the answer I received.

"Finner data is not used in the Weather Summary due to a few reasons.
Over a year ago, it was changed to a Tucson type station, in which we
are currently in the process of monitoring the quality of the data.

Also, before the changeover, there was gaps in the data which means that we are unable to use it for comparison for long-term data use."

Thanks for looking into that ... if we ran into a situation where the scoring was more affected, I might poll the participants in a case where we were all sure that the reading was valid, as I think this case represented (other stations not in our contest were milder) -- but as mentioned, with the minor exception of one forecast getting one additional point, this situation had no actual bearing on the contest scores. We would have been going off the same "mercy rules" regardless.
