Connolly services: cancellations due to unofficial action by Corporate Communications

Due to unofficial action by drivers, the following services will be cancelled today:

Customers are advised to travel on other scheduled services on these routes: customers travelling to and from Docklands have the option of travelling on other Docklands services, or diverting to Connolly Station, for Connolly-Maynooth services.

As a result of these cancellations, there are expected to be heavier loadings on other scheduled services this afternoon and evening.

Fresh contact due in train drivers' dispute

The Labour Relations Commission was expected to renew contact with management and unions at Iarnród Éireann today, as part of the continuing efforts to resolve a dispute over driver rostering.

Talks at the commission adjourned without agreement yesterday.

The dispute has caused disruption to train services.

Today's 6.30am Portlaoise to Dublin Heuston train and the 5.35pm train from Heuston to Carlow are cancelled.

Ten trains in the north Dublin area were also cancelled yesterday.

Routes 102 & 230

Dublin Bus wish to advise customers, that from Sunday 9th March 2008, Route 102 will be extended to Dublin Airport to incorporate Route 230, which will no longer operate.

The revised Route 102 will operate on its current routing up to Seabury and then continue on to Dublin Aiport via Kinsealy, providing a new rail to airport link for Sutton and Malahide train stations.

The route will also have a new Sunday service with 13 departures in both directions.

Swift sailings cancelled amid gale warning

All Irish Ferries Swift sailings on the Dublin to Holyhead route for today have been cancelled. The cancellations followed warnings of gale force winds on all sea areas today.

Passengers will be accommodated on the cruise ferry sailing at 8.55pm tonight. All other Irish Ferries services and all Stena Line services are expected to sail to schedule today.

Weather inland is expected to be stormy tomorrow night and on Monday afternoon with flood alerts issued to Dublin coastal areas.

Storm force winds and high tides are forecast to bring one of the strongest storms of the winter over the next two days.

Flood barriers have been put in place, and sailors and fishermen have been warned about conditions on the Irish Sea.

A band of exceptionally low pressure is expected to bring severe winds - particularly in the south of the country.

Sea defences have been erected at areas north and south of Dublin city. Temporary road closures have also been announced.

Dublin City Council says there is a likelihood of flooding tomorrow night and early Monday afternoon because of high tides.

Dam bags have been placed on seafront areas in Sandymount, Ringsend and Clontarf.

Wind gusts of up to 120 or 130 km/h are likely, with rainfall of about 20-30mm expected between Sunday night and Monday.

Unusually high tides are also posing a risk of flooding in some areas.

The Liffey boardwalk and nine sections of road will also be closed during the flood alert periods - from 11pm on Sunday night to 2am on Monday and from 11.30am to 12.30pm on Monday.

Met Éireann is also advising drivers to expect difficult conditions on roads around the country.

Hi all

After arriving to Pearse station last week to find it closed, I realised -once again- it was a real pity I didn't check the Irish Rail site every bloody time I take a train!

I access an RSS reader a couple of times a day to check on headlines etc from my favourite sites and I thought it might be handy if you could get an RSS feed for Irish Rail travel alerts. Rather than hold my breath, I have created my own one which pulls info from the Irish Rail site:

Dublin to Gorey/Enniscorthy/Rosslare Europort - resignalling works, 14th to 27th April 2008 by Corporate Communications

Iarnród Éireann reminds customers that to facilitate the commissioning of a new computerised signalling system on the Rosslare route, there will be disruption to services on the route covering Rosslare Intercity and Gorey/Enniscorthy commuter services during the period 14th April to 27th April inclusive.

Services will operate with bus transfers as follows:

14th-25th April: Wicklow-Rosslare Europort: bus transfers
26th April: Greystones-Rosslare Europort: bus transfers
27th April: Dublin-Rosslare Europort: bus transfers

Please note bus transfers on services to Dublin will depart earlier than scheduled train times.

Intending passengers who have mobility impairment or who have special needs should contact their local station in advance.

Ennis to Limerick line reopens by Corporate Communications

UPDATE 27th March 2008 - 09.00hrs

Iarnród Éireann advise that the Ennis to Limerick rail line has reopened.

The first service to operate is this morning's 09.20 Limerick to Ennis service, and services will now operate as normal.

This is welcome news for Ennis rail commuters following the closure of the line since the 6th February last due to flooding near Ballycar.

While train services will operate as normal over today and Friday, planned track improvement works at Ennis Junction mean that train services will be replaced by bus transfers from 18.00 hrs on Saturday 29th March to 10.00hrs on Sunday 30th March.

Iarnrod Eireann apologies to customers for the inconvenience caused during this period of closure and are looking forward to the full resumption of train services on the Ennis line from next Monday.

M50 - Temporary Overnight Closure - Friday 28 March and Saturday 29 March 2008 Junctions 14 to 17
New Luas Bridge over M50 at Junction 14 (Leopardstown Bridge)

Construction of the Luas Bridge over the M50 at Junction 14 Leopardstown is progressing well. The pier construction is complete and structural steel erection has commenced. To facilitate bridge construction closures of the M50 Southbound and Northbound will be required.

Southbound Closure:
From 8pm on Friday 28 March to 11am on Saturday 29 March 2008 the M50 Southbound will be closed from Junction 14 (Leopardstown) to Junction 17 (Shankill).

Northbound Closure:
From 8pm on Saturday 29 March to 11am on Sunday 30 March the M50 Northbound will be closed from Junction 17 (Shankill) to Junction 14 (Leopardstown).

These M50 closures are required to put in place structural steel spans for the New Luas Bridge that will cross the motorway. Works are subject to weather conditions.

M50/N7 interchange works at Luas Red Cow Stop and P&R will be conducted over coming months and as the works progress access to Luas Red Cow Park & Ride will change from time to time.

If you are entering Luas Red Cow by vehicle, foot or bicycle please follow the directional signs which are clearly posted. Access will change as the works progress so please take note of the signs each time you enter.

These works include the realignment of the Luas Red Line, taking Luas away from road traffic interaction at the M50/N7 interchange. Once complete Luas will operate segregated from all traffic at the Red Cow Roundabout and this will reduce the overall commuter time from Red Cow to City Centre.

Alternative parking is available at the new Luas Tallaght Cross Park & Ride which is located close to Hospital Luas Stop and Tallaght Luas Stop with access via Belgard Square West. It is open 24 hours a day and has 450 spaces. Tariffs are €2 for up to 4 hours or part thereof and €4 maximum daily charge.

Cork & Kerry service alterations, Sundays by Corporate Communications

Iarnród Éireann advises customers that due to ongoing drivers issues, the following service alterations will be in place this Sunday on rail services serving Cork and Kerry.

Cork-Dublin route

Services from Cork to Dublin Heuston will operate at 08.30hrs and 10.30hrs on Sunday, not 07.30hrs, 09.30hrs and 11.30hrs as advertised.

The 11.00hrs service from Dublin Heuston to Cork is cancelled. Customers will be accommodated on the 12.00hrs service from Dublin Heuston to Cork.

The 08.30hrs Cork to Heuston serves: Mallow (08.52hrs, Charleville 09.07hrs) and Limerick Junction (09.29hrs) arriving in Dublin Heuston at 11.20hrs.

The 10.30hrs Cork to Heuston serves: Mallow (10.52hrs), Charleville (11.07hrs) and Thurles (11.46hrs), arriving in Dublin Heuston at 13.20hrs.

Tralee - Dublin route

The 08.10hrs Tralee to Cork (change at Mallow for Dublin) service on Sunday will depart Tralee earlier at 07.15hrs, and operate to Mallow only.

The train will serve Farranfore (07.29hrs), Killarney (07.51hrs), Rathmore (08.10hrs), Millstreet (08.20hrs), Banteer (08.32hrs) and Mallow (arriving 08.47hrs). It will connect with a service from Mallow to Dublin, which departs Mallow at 08.52hrs, arriving in Dublin at 11.20hrs.

Closure of Neilstown Bridge - Diversions on Routes 51 & 79x

Dublin Bus wish to advise customers that from Monday 7th April 2008 Neilstown Bridge will be closed due to road works until further notice.

The following diversions will apply to Routes 51 and 79x:

Motorists warned over subzero temperatures

Motorists are being warned to take extra care on the roads as temperatures are forecast to plummet to -4C overnight as a cold snap descends on the country.

Brian Farrell of the Road Safety Authority says drivers should slow down as icy conditions are forecast.

Snowfalls in England have led to flight delays at Heathrow and Gatwick.

The total number of flights cancelled at Heathrow's Terminal 5 today had risen to 126. Of these cancellations, 114 (57 return flights; one in and one out) were due to snow, and the remaining 12 were down to BAA's technical fault.

Snow had also led to the cancellation of 32 BA flights (16 return flights) at Gatwick Airport.

Road access to the airport has also been hampered by snow.

Ferry sailings have also been disrupted by the weather.

This morning's Irish Ferries Jonathon Swift sailing from Dublin to Holyhead and today's 2.30pm sailing have been cancelled.

All other Irish Ferries sailings and all Stena Line services are operating normally.

The wintry conditions, which included snowfalls in parts of the country early today, have also caused the cancellation of the Co Roscommon ploughing championships in Kiltoom today.

The event, which attracts up to 5,000 people, was due to take place on a farm near Athlone. Based on today's forecast, the organising committee decided yesterday to defer the event until 27 April.

Forecasters say there is an 80% chance of heavy snow and widespread icy roads across Northern Ireland today.

Emily Gleeson of Met Éireann says the wintry weather will continue for the next couple of days.

There were frost and icy stretches in places this morning and drivers were being advised to drive with care.

Some heavy snowfalls are expected, especially across the northern half of the country, along with a risk of thunder.

However, there will be sunny spells also, which should clear any snow from lower levels.

Age Action has urged members of the general public to be good neighbours by keeping an eye out for their older relatives, friends and neighbours during the current freezing weather.

We would encourage people to drop in to ensure their older neighbour is okay and has sufficient food and fuel,'' Age Action spokesman Eamon Timmins said.

Threatened Unofficial industrial action in South-West Region

Bus Éireann has learned that a small number of Part Time School Bus Drivers in the South-West region intend to engage in unofficial strike action tomorrow, Friday April 11th.

This is despite being instructed repeatedly and unambiguously by their union SIPTU to work normally. In a statement sent to all members, SIPTU said:

“This is to advise that a full Labour Court hearing regarding the issue of full flexibility has been arranged for the 16th of April 2008. This is contingent on there being no Industrial Action of any kind between now and that date. Any repeat of the unofficial action of the kind taken in Limerick could put this date in jeopardy. We urge all our members to follow the agreed procedures as accepted by the National Committee.”

A spokesperson for Bus Éireann said: “Bus Éireann strongly condemns the proposed unofficial action, as it is in breach of all agreed industrial relations procedures. Along with SIPTU, we are calling on all drivers to work as normal tomorrow and to ensure that the welfare and safety of school children is not put at risk by this wildcat action by a small number of individuals.”

“A number of conciliation conferences have been held recently to discuss the issues of pay and conditions for Part Time School Bus Drivers.”

“As part of this process, a proposal from the Labour Relations Commission (LRC) containing a significant increase in wages for Part Time School Bus Drivers in lieu of flexibilities was tabled and was recommended for acceptance by all parties. SIPTU has sought clarification on aspects of the proposal and have now referred the matter to the Labour Court for a full hearing on Wednesday April 16th 2008.”

“However, a number of individuals who engaged in unofficial action last Friday April 4th and Bus Éireann understands, intend to do so again, tomorrow Friday April 11th, are jeopardising that hearing.”

“There are agreed processes for the resolution of issues between all staff and management. The unofficial withdrawal of service, particularly when it adversely impacts on school children is totally unacceptable and is in breach of industrial relations law.”

- Advice to Parents -

Bus Éireann has been in contact with schools and VEC offices to advise them of the potential disruption. Parents in the areas affected are advised to make alternative arrangements and may contact the Bus Éireann School Transport Office in Limerick on 061 217445/6/7 for further information.

- Background -

The issue at hand relates to the aforementioned pay and flexibility proposal currently before SIPTU. Under the terms of the proposed deal, in return for a significant increase in the hourly rate, Part Time School Bus Drivers must agree to some flexible working practices, for example, school bus drivers may not necessarily be allocated to the same route at all times but may instead be required to work different school bus routes from time to time, as the need arises, to ensure value for tax payers money.

The company has given a commitment to the Labour Relations Commission that any such changes will be operated in a fair and equitable manner.

Unofficial industrial action in South-West Region

Bus Éireann is again calling on the small number of Part Time School Bus Drivers in the South-West region who are engaging in unofficial stoppage to bring an immediate end to their disruptive action.

This morning, Fri April 11th, approximately 29 drivers failed to carry out their duties, leaving approximately 2000 school children without transportation to school. (12,000 school children in the region were unaffected.) No regular city, commuter or Expressway services were affected.

Areas where some school transport services were affected were Hospital, Doon, Newport, Pallaskhenry, Kilfinan and Askeaton in Co Limerick, some parts of Co Tipperary and also Portumna in Co Galway,

The unofficial action is despite drivers being instructed repeatedly and unambiguously by their union SIPTU to work normally. In a statement sent to all members yesterday, SIPTU said:

Commuters are advised to avoid the area during these hours if possible.

The street will also be closed to traffic from 10.30am to approximately 2.30pm tomorrow.

Butt Bridge will be closed to traffic from 1pm to approximately 2.30pm. Motorists travelling along Pearse Street will be diverted from Tara Street onto Burgh Quay and along O'Connell Street.

Eden Quay will be closed to traffic from 1.30pm to 2.30pm. Traffic will be diverted up O'Connell Street or southbound across O'Connell Bridge.

Other restrictions will be in operation around Beresford Place.

Commuters are advised to avoid these areas during these hours tomorrow if at all possible.

Iarnród Éireann reminds customers that to facilitate the commissioning of a new computerised signalling system on the Rosslare route, there will be disruption to services on the route covering Rosslare Intercity and Gorey/Enniscorthy commuter services during the period 14th April to 27th April inclusive.

Services will operate with bus transfers as follows:

26th April: Greystones-Rosslare Europort: bus transfers

27th April: Dublin-Rosslare Europort: bus transfers

Please note bus transfers on services to Dublin will depart earlier than scheduled train times.

Limerick Junction/Waterford/Rosslare Europort

There will be bus transfers from Wellingtonbridge to Rosslare and Enniscorthy. Train services will be as normal between Limerick Junction, Waterford and Wellingtonbridge.

Re-routing of Route 79a

Dublin Bus is pleased to announce the re-routing of Route 79a in the Inchicore area as and from Sunday 27th April 2008.

The service will now operate along the following route:

Inbound
Buses will continue onto the Con Colbert Road from Sarsfield Road, and will no longer serve Grattan Cresent/Inchicore Road.

Outbound
Buses will continue along Con Colbert Road, turning left onto Sarsfield Road and back onto normal route, and will no longer serve Inchicore Road/Grattan Crescent.

There will be no changes to Route 79.

Bus Éireann Launches Two New Routes in Cork

Monday 21 April 21 2008

Two new bus services which will enable hundreds more people in Cork city to choose public transport on a daily basis are to be officially launched by Bus Éireann today Monday April 21st.

The new No 10A and the No 16 routes, serving the well populated suburbs of Skehard and Rochestown respectively, are operated by a number of new low floor wheelchair accessible city buses, manufactured in Northern Ireland by Wrights Bus.

Funding provided to Bus Éireann under Transport 21 to acquire additional buses for the city has made the introduction of the new routes possible.

The new services will be officially launched by the Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr Donal Counihan and the Chairman of Bus Éireann, Dr John Lynch at the Clarion Hotel, Lapp’s Quay at 12.00 hrs.

Dr John Lynch said:“Under Transport 21, Bus Éireann is introducing 30 vehicles into the Cork fleet in 2008, a combination of additional and replacement city buses, single deck coaches and double deck coaches. All vehicles are wheelchair accessible and the addition of these new buses to the fleet in Cork means that the city service fleet is now 100% fully accessible. The additional vehicles are enabling Bus Eireann to improve existing services for our customers, and to introduce new services, such as the 10A and the 16, for which there is strong local demand."

He added: “These new services are creating jobs opportunities. In Cork alone, 20 additional drivers will be recruited this year to work the new routes.”

- The new 10A bus service -
The 10A route operates from City Centre (South Mall) to Mahon Point and Jacobs Island via Boreenmanna Road. The 10A complements the existing No.10 service which operates between the City Centre (South Mall) and Mahon Point and Jacobs Island via the Ballinlough Road. The 10A operates Monday to Friday, from 07.30 to 19.25, with 15 services daily.

- The new 16 bus service -
1The 16 route operates from City Centre (South Mall) to Clarkes Hill (Mount Oval) via Rochestown Road returning to the City Centre via Garryduff, Maryborough Hill and Douglas.

The 16 route operates a total of 26 services daily Monday to Saturday from 07.30 to 20.25 and 11 services on Sundays. The new route complements the existing 223 service from Monkstown serving Rochestown Road and the 222 service from Carrigaline which operates via Maryborough Hill.

Mr Joe Fitzgerald, Bus Éireann Regional Manager South said:

“This new 10A route provides a very important link for the residents of Skehard and Boreenmanna Road to the city centre in one direction and to Mahon Point Shopping Centre and Jacobs Island in the other direction. This new 16 service provides an essential service for the expanding population in the area of Mount Oval and Garryduff and provides vital connections for people travelling into the city centre.”

“The introduction of these new services also means people can take the greener option by availing of public transport to get to and from the city centre.”

- First Customers Rewarded -
At today’s launch, the first customers of both new services will be presented with complimentary travel vouchers. Liam O’ Sullivan from Blackrock, Chris Murphy from Mount Oval and Cillian Pleimeann from Broadale were the first passengers on the new routes.

- More and Better Services in the Pipeline -
Additional improvements are planned by Bus Éireann for the Cork area later in 2008, including:
• A higher frequency service on Route No 5 (Kent Station - CIT)
• A higher frequency service on Route No 8 (Bishopstown-Mayfield)
• A higher frequency service on Route No 14 (City to Cork University Hospital)

Dublin Bus wishes to advise customers of roadworks on Saturday 26th April 2008 between 08:00hrs and 16:00hrs at the Junction of Seville Place and Oriel Street Upper.

Routes 90 and 151 will continue along Seville Place and turn left into Amiens Street and back onto their normal routing. The bus stop on Oriel Street will be made inactive during this time.

Dublin to Gorey/Enniscorthy/Rosslare Europort - resignalling works, 14th to 27th April 2008 by Corporate Communications

Iarnród Éireann reminds customers that to facilitate the commissioning of a new computerised signalling system on the Rosslare route, there will be disruption to services on the route covering Rosslare Intercity and Gorey/Enniscorthy commuter services during the period 14th April to 27th April inclusive.

Services will operate with bus transfers as follows:
14th-25th April: Wicklow-Rosslare Europort: bus transfers
26th April: Greystones-Rosslare Europort: bus transfers
27th April: Dublin-Rosslare Europort: bus transfers

Please note bus transfers on services to Dublin will depart earlier than scheduled train times.

Limerick Junction/Waterford/Rosslare Europort

There will be bus transfers from Wellingtonbridge to Rosslare and Enniscorthy. Train services will be as normal between Limerick Junction, Waterford and Wellingtonbridge.
