Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

How did the Roman governors of Egypt differ from the those of the other provinces?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,177 ✭✭✭Guffy

he was a man of lower rank? I don't know if that was worded right but as Egypt was the bread basket of the empire no general or man of note could enter the province without the emperors personal permission for fear they would lead a rebellion from Egypt. as a result those selected to administer the province were from lower ranks and would be unable to insight revolt.

The governor of Egypt was a prefect appointed by the Emperor, but, unlike other governors, had to be a member of the equestrian order

Romulus Augustus (officially western empire) I know there was another who claimed it after him but can't remember his name. If that's correct.

How many men were meant to be in a legion (officially) after Marian's reforms?

    Sorry - can't give it.

Roman empire continued to exist long after the fall of Rome and collapse of the Western Empire.

The Roman Empire - it survived in the east.

Constantine XI Palaiologos if I am correct, the Eastern Empire lasted nearly a thousand years after the fall of the western empire

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,177 ✭✭✭Guffy

    o yes the byzantians

The roman empire did not exist after the fall of Rome. It may have still been referred as such at the time but that was because it had always been referred as such. some may argue and I would be one, that the eastern empire was a completely different empire in all but name even before the fall of Rome.

if a question is asked about rome it is about rome itself not an off branch empire that seceded from Rome.

The vast majority of historians would disagree.

nope the vast majority go as far as the western empire's demise, then they scert over the eastern empire. The vast majority refer to them as the byzantine empire when not talking about Rome.

Dude. It's just people asking each other general knowledge questions on an internet thread not Boardsdog Millionaire.

I am a historian, I work everyday with historians - when we lecture on the Roman Empire post Constantine we mean east plus west unless we specify otherwise. But if you are that excised then hey - take it and ask a question.

It's the second time this q has come up, I'm not looking to ask a question, I'm just pointing out that history makes a distinction between the two. The eastern empire is called the Byzantine empire as far Constantine time to distinguish the difference between the two.

Ok, guys, can I suggest that rather than wait for the video referee, whichever one of you reads this first might post a question. Otherwise I'll have to claim " Naopleon II = last King of Rome " and post a question myself, and then we will be as the Great Western Schism in its Rome/Avignon/Pisa phase i.e. with three popes instead of two :) Question please.

That's good enough, the original name after its founder Prince Adam Czartoryski. It's now called Polonezkoy meaning " Polish village."
