The cause of Saturdays trouble was the admittance of relatively few scumbags who would have done the same thing at any event they gatecrashed. It was not the fault of any of the acts and the vast amount of good people who enjoyed themselves. The only solution is to seriously overhaul the gate policy at large events. The truth is, the solutions are there but would eat into the profits of the organisers. Gigs are about music and freedom, the people who caused this mess are not music fans.

I was there on Saturday, personally didn't see any violence and definitely didn't feel threatened at any time.

Just having a quick read through this massive thread, I see lots of people mentioning drugs as being the problem. I was just away for 2 weeks in Ibiza. In 14 days of clubbing every night and sometimes during the day as well, I did not see one argument, fight or stabbing. NOT ONE! And I'd say at least 60% of the people in the clubs and bars were on drugs... The bars on the strip would have 1 or 2 bouncers max! And the mega clubs would have security, but they'd only seem to appear when crowds needed to be moved... The reason there are so many fights over here is simply because of the amount of alcohol people consume. I fear for the electric picnic goers this year. The ex-oxegen crew will be there in force, and they're the exact same ones that were at SHM on Saturday. God only knows what they'll do in a weekend!

Also when people say "All these scumbags constantly fighting!", take a walk up Harcourt street at 3am on a Saturday night, your not going to see a crowd of posh people making daisy chains and hugging each other, I can assure you of that... Fighting happens in every walk of society. It's the rising level of knife crime that people would want to be worried about...

I agree with Lizzboy. I have been at several overseas festivals - Sonar in particular I was at a couple of times and there is never ever agro and I would say the vast majority of people there are on drugs. I have never seen so much as an arguement and there's fk all security round for this reason.

For the record I don't do illegal drugs at all myself, and I wouldn't consider myself 'pro' drug but I really hate the way drugs are being blamed as being the problem for what is essentially a load of fking skangers causing grief.

Drugs don't make you magic up a knife out of thin air at a concert, being a scumbag makes you carry one with you..

I know loads of people who went, all from middle class backrounds who had a great time. The stabbings speak for themselves though. Perhaps it was all to do with where you were standing which depended how safe you felt?

sometimes the actions of a few can tarnish a whole group - i remember in the early days of punk, there was a murder at a Dublin gig - and punk became associated with violence in the media for years - the reality was there was only a few punch ups -

even the Rolling Stones became associated with violence for years, due to the actions of one or 2 Hells Angels at Altamont

Shocked and saddened by the number of people on here trying to claim drugs are ok and anyone who drinks is as liable to do "outrageous things".

While people may drink to excess it is million times better then taking even 1 pill.

1 pill can kill you.
too many pills will in general hurt you and others more then to many drinks.
Pills/drugs and even weed of any kind is illegal.
Buying them directly supports crime/gangs/all related activities/knife crime.

If you are a pill head that is your decision but do not try and defend the indefensible.

I know I would feel safer around a group of messy drunks instead of people off their heads on class a drugs.

I'm not trying to claim the fact that pills are OK. I'm just stating facts from my own experience and that of about 20 other friends who were on the same holiday in Ibiza. Not one argument in 14 days of clubbing says something, whether you like the idea of it maybe being down to the drug use or not is irrelevant. The fact is the scenario of going to Dublin on a 14 day session without seeing a single argument, would in my opinion simply be impossible. And I personally put that down to the amount of alcohol people consume.

Hence why cannabis should be legalised and regulated in this country. Also a lot of people grow their own for their own consumption.

Besides cannabis is obviously not the problem in this country, it's alcohol and harder drugs.

People were out of their minds fighting - and worse still appearing to target anyone/random innocent people/people trying to help. It also shows the completely lack of security. 1 person there - in fairness doing his best, why should he risk his life.

There is a culture of getting off our heads, now combined with carrying knifes. That to me means premeditated to use it - the guy should be charged for attempted murder. If someone died as a result he should be charged for murder not manslaughter.

Would you support the legalisation of drugs then? That would take all the money out of the 'underworlds' hands in one swoop.

Not that i do much these days but when i do take drugs i use testing kits to prove their purity, also it's not in a drug dealers interests to be poisoning their costumers.

I also have to agree with the other poster about Ibiza, i was there last month for 2 weeks and i have never seen so much drug use in my life and there was not even the hint of a fight breaking out.

Absolutely, while i don't agree with hard drugs banning them clearly doesn't work.

The Government may as well make money off it instead of wasting money fighting it. Use that money to create initiatives to change our culture - or to at least police the streets properly.

It's not so much an Irish problem then a people problem. It happens everywhere in the world.

I've been to loads of concerts and festivals in Ireland and have never seen an ounce of trouble. Will be heading to EP and I hope my festival going remains trouble free.

Yeah I'm not sure if a drugs are worse than alcohol debate and vice-versa is really that relevant. I think that if you bring a knife to a gig, only one thing is gonna happen, whether you stay sober or ingest your body weight in booze and drugs.
