Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Satrurday 5th Feb
    4miles - 38mins
Hadn't planned on running today but I wanted to see how the legs would hold up after the last few days. My shins were pretty achey but not painful so that's something. I hope they hold up for 16 miles tomorrow - I'm really looking forward to it. And apart from the shins, everything else is feeling great. Fingers crossed. I'm off to pray to every God I can think of!

You wouldn't believe just how much I wish I could say the same thing. Injury has definitely improved though, no pain from 3 hours of walking around the Dundrum centre surely has to count for something... :pac:

    No physical pain anyway...

I was there for 3 hours last saturday - 2 and a half were spent eating and drinking coffee despite my best intentions to shop and stop showing up to work dressed like a tinker :D

True that... though a Butler's coffee and chocolate does help to soothe some of the mental pain.

    Sunday 6th Februaury
    - 16.4 miles – approx 2hrs35
Left my garmin in the office this weekend so I had to rely on my coaches to go the distance for me. Cheers lads!:)

Lesson: an 8 week old baby is not conducive to marathon training. I fed her and dumped her on my mum saying that I was ‘just nipping over to the park for a run – won’t be long’... mwah ha ha!! Don’t panic people – she’s not mine, I’m a mere aunty. I just forgot when I offered to babysit last night that that would write off Sunday morning as well as Saturday night. Thank god for grannies!

Met MrSlow bright and early in perfect running conditions () that had had me struggling to keep the car on four wheels on the M50. To say I was not looking forward to getting out of the car is an understatement. It was very windy out there! Found the first 3 pretty tough but settled down after. Picked up Chinguetti and the Wexican after 6.5miles/1hour ish. The lads acted as a three-strong wind breaker for me a few times for which I was very grateful. I think we hit the S-bends into the wind at mile 13/14 which I found tough as hell! Chinguetti asked me how I was feeling at that point – there were few words that could describe it...and I don’t know him well enough to let that side of me rip to him just yet! The wind was behind us for the last mile thank god. My shins behaved (yaay) but my poor legs were all tuckered out by then – there was certainly no sprint finish in them. Took a gel at 10 miles – I didn’t feel like I needed it at the time but I’d say I would have suffered later had I not.

Longest run ever for claralara. I’m delirah to have 16 miles under my belt – I was like a giddy schoolgirl when I got home! :D It now feels like my legs have disassociated themselves from my body but hopefully they’ll be grand again after a rest tomorrow. Whether I can blame this feeling on the 16miles or the champers I’ve been drinking all evening is another question... My other brother got engaged – everyone is wondering when I’m going to do something worthwhile...if only they knew of these Connemara plans of mine!

Well deserved champers, you must be chuffed to get the 16-miler out of the way this weekend! You're doing great, and there's still lots of time before Conn. :)

I have to say if you did take the head off me, i would probably have not heard you as the wind was sheer awful on the S bends. I was glad to get back to the car myself.

Heavens opened 10 minutes later at home so we finished up at the right time. Well done again on the 16 miles in terrible weather, doubt it will be any worse in Conn.

Champers will go down well i bet.

RQ, i am a very shy person so please don't shout at me as i may cry:D

I hope the Wexican made it home alive. He was last seen heading off along the 15 acres into a gale:pac:

You have to bend them to your will! Rather than thinking "****e, that's still 9 miles shorter than a marathon", or "holy crap 17 miles sounds like an awful long way", think "that's only 1km more than what I've already managed just fine".

Yep, since the race is on I might make some plans for my run to coincide with the phoenix park around that time (assuming I do not go out boozing again).

Defo up for Saturday alright. I could even try stretch it to 17.5 if I was challenged...

Heading to the cinema after work tomorrow so I have the alarm set for 6am for a pre-work run. I'll pencil in the track for next week though if you're doing it.

Surely not! I'm gonna mix it up a bit and spend next sunday in a pub pretending to be interested in some sore of team sport - I doubt it'll come close to the joy of that gale force beating! I didn't envy you heading off though I must admit. Nice to meet you and cheers for getting me around - I hope my slowness provided a nice easy warm up! :)

    Tuesday 8th February
    - 4.49miles – 41.49mins (I must bring my Garmin home tonight!!)
And the reason why I have this log is to keep me and my fond acquaintance with the snooze button motivated!! I nearly didn’t make it this morning. Was knackered last night but didn’t sleep great. It was so dark and windy out – a far cry from the depths of my warm bed. It was a case of mind over matter. 4.5 handy miles – the legs are still heavy from Sunday but it was grand taking it easy. As usual, I was glad I went out. An extra 40 minutes in bed wouldn’t have made me feel as good as getting out for a run did. (Blah – I hate knowing that lesson!)

    Well done on overcoming it.

Planned to run into work this am but ended up having to come in for 7 so unfortunatley it wasn't the snooze the button that prevented that today. It doesn't look like I'm going to fit in 8 miles tonight. I could probably get 4miles in timewise but for some reason my shin is sore again.. it must be a wednesday thing. So come on know-it-alls should I rest her today and do 8 tomorrow instead? (I've cancelled my after-work plans in anticipation of a combination of 8miles after work and needing a night on the couch)!:)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 504 ✭✭✭maria74

I would say do 4 miles tonight...too much pressure to do it tomorow...if you can get nearer to 8 miles even better! And how pleasurable will the couch feel after that???:)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,551 ✭✭✭chinguetti

Personally if i had a sore shin, i'ld rest it tonight and see how it is tomorrow and try 4 miles then. So sit on couch, leg up and ice on the shin for 20 mins. Do some stretching for 10 mins and repeat this twice. Also double bill of CSI NY on tonight:D

You should know your own body and if it can take 8 miles at this stage of training with a niggle. Sometimes rest is more important than running and aches start when you up the mileage.

I wouldn't even say to go for 8 miles tomorrow. Shin problems can be awkward, is it only one leg you've problems with?

Yeah it’s only the left one that has pain. It’s like an inflammation as opposed to an ache. It’s weird though – last Wednesday it got sore while I was running in the morning and it was sore even when resting so I didn’t run until Saturday night when I did a slow 4 miles and both shins were a bit achey then. But then on Sunday I did just over 16 mile and they were grand, not a bother. They were fine again on Tuesday when running and just randomly got that pain in my left one again yesterday doing absolutely nothing. I had a physio appointment booked for Monday morning anyway but they’ve put me on the cancellation list for today so hopefully I’ll get a call.

I didn’t run last night and instead went for dinner and to the cinema (again!) and ate my way through enough popcorn and maltesers to feed a large nation. :o

I think I’m going to be a very sensible girl and take a week off running. If I do an hour on the X trainer or a spinning class everyday for the week and then run next Thursday and hopefully be back on form for a good long run next weekend. Is this a wise idea? God I wish I knew more. I must get a few books to read.

In any event I know I need a new pair of runners so that is high priority on the to-do list this weekend.

Wait and see what the physio says before you opt out for a full week, your runners could be the issue (wear and tear might be making your foot fall incorrectly straining the shin), go and get reassessed for new runners rather than buying a newer generation of your current ones.

All of that extra weight you'll be carrying after last night won't help :D

Agree with Mr Slow for a change
Deffo go to a running shop before getting new runners and make sure you are still in the right ones. gaits can change with time and you might need more/less support in your shoes.
Also you have to differentiate between niggles and injuries. Niggles you can run through and if we all stopped running when we had niggles in marathon training there would be very little training done :pac:
After a while you'll be able to tell yourself when something is serious and when it's not. Wait to see what the physio says before writing the week off completely, if you don't get an appointment today you could try just a very easy few miles to test the waters with the shins.
