There was a major security operation surrounding the visit of Prince Charles and his wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, to the Republic of Ireland this week. The Garda Special Detective Unit (SDU) and its Emergency Response Unit (ERU) took charge of the armed close protection, as they did when the Queen visited in 2011. Here are some of the vehicles that were involved in the operation;
Prince Charles motorcade;
Special Branch Close Protection Team: 2012 Mercedes-Benz Viano 2.2L Diesel
SDU "S1": 2015 BMW X5 3.0L Diesel (fake regs), one of 4 supplied to Gardaí by BMW Ireland
VIP: 2012 BMW 7 Series (760) High Security 4.3L Petrol, registered in the UK on 11 May 2015, driven by a trained driver from the SO14 Royalty Protection Branch (London Metropolitan Police)
SDU "S2": 2015 BMW X5 3.0L Diesel
ERU armed close protection offcers: unmarked 2012 Toyota Land Cruiser 4.5L V8 Diesel
SDU close protection: unmarked 2008 BMW 5 Series (fake plates, surprisingly)
ERU counter-assault team: unmarked 2008 Audi Q7 3.0L Disesel (240bhp)
ERU close protection: unmarked 2010 Land Cruiser Ranger Rover 3.0L Diesel V6
Back-up VIP car: 2015 BMW 7 Series High-Security lefthand drive, supplied to SDU by BMW Ireland
SDU follow car: unmarked 2006 Volvo S80 Premium 2.4L Diesel
Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall motorcade;
Special Detective Unit Close Protection Team: 2013 Mercedes-Benz Viano V220 2.1L Diesel
SDU "S1": 2015 BMW X5 (fake regs), supplied to Gardaí by BMW Ireland
VIP: 2013 Audi A8 L 6.0L Petrol W12 High Security, UK registered, driven by a member of the Met Police Royalty Protection Branch (SO14)

Met and Secret Service vehicles - notice armoured and unarmoured Suburbans in silver which make it obvious which is which, at least with black it's a bit more difficult (from a DISTANCE )
