Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I've dodgy knees and a bad back and I could easily outrun a bunch of those security guards.

Stone cold sober at midday and one security guard wouldn't let me into the apartments. A few hours later, I stumbled past five of them into the same apartment. Guess they had the strict ones out early.

I thought the security were great though, they were friendly and helpful any time I spoke to them.

It is eerily quiet around campus today, a lot of sore heads I would imagine :P

How was last night? Any issues? As amazed with the amount of security around yesterday. Town looks clean this morning though!

worst part about getting up to volunteer to clean the streets at 7.45 in the morning? Not being around for the photo and not being tagged as absent in it. All I want is some damn recognition!! :P

Loads of people blocked Main St singing the Yaya-Kolo Toure song for about an hour. I don't think that can be put down to Xmas day. That trick is as old as the town itself.

So they decide to send out an e-mail about making sure your belongings are safe before you leave at 20 to 4 on the last day of the term when the vast majority of students have probably already gone home...

That time of year again :(:(:(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,812 ✭✭✭thelad95

Is there any plans to change exams to before Christmas? I don't see the point starting the year so late (pretty much October), then having a mid-term break after what 4 weeks of the term? Is there a reason the college starts so late?

The next couple of weeks will be murderous and I couldn't enjoy Christmas with the exams hanging over me.

I, for one, certainly hope not.

I need this amount of time to feel like I'm going to do my best in exams. It's awful having just a week between the end of classes and start of exams in summer. Way too much stress. Much prefer it like this.

Though I may be in a minority.

Look on the bright side some colleges wait until the summer to do both semesters exams.

I honestly can't make head or tail of CS258. The exam papers are like reading the most turgid of John Waters' rants.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,463 ✭✭✭Kiwi_knock

The SU last year went on a big push to move the exams before Christmas. They ran a poll on the Freshers Facebook group which largely supported moving the exams. They didn't bother asking anyone else. They then presented the findings to the University Authorities who basically didn't accept them because it was such a small sample and it wasn't representative of the whole student body. So there is no plans in the future to change the date of exams.

I much prefer starting exams after Christmas. Having one week to study everything is far too much pressure.

I remember the poll on the group page last year (I was a fresher obviously!) and it was obvious what we thought/wanted but I never heard anything after.. This poll was probably 12 months ago.

It was a strange method really, thought they'd have an actual "in college vote" or something

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,764 ✭✭✭mickstupp

I've often gotten the annoying impression that the SU assumes everyone is on Facebook and so don't bother themselves to announce things by other means. Certainly would've made sense asking people who were in other years, and had actually gone through a heap of exams what their opinion was.

I'd be so pissed if that had passed on that poll alone. Is it just me or has the SU gone from bad to worse lately?

As a fresher, I feel they could do more for us than just telling us how much craic Freshers week is and how boring lectures are.

I haven't stopped regretting that time I went to a protest about fees at the beginning of my second year. I spent the rest of that year catching up with the rest of the class.

Some say it all started with a man in a dress singing to the masses and urging them to "get down on Friday".

Just a few trivial questions. Do you have to sign in before an exam? Can you leave early?

  • Registered Users Posts: 704 ✭✭✭Lara_15

    Lol exams, h8 dat

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,764 ✭✭✭mickstupp

Don't have to sign in, unless that's a new rule. You leave your ID on the desk and they come around and check it, make sure you are who you are, maybe look inside your pencil case or whatever.

Think if it's a 2 or 3 hour exam, you can leave after the first hour.
If it's a 90 minute exam, you're not allowed leave.

No, they'll check your student card during the exam, you don't have to sign in beforehand.
You can leave early if the exam is two hours or more - after the first half hour, iirc, but it's a few years since I was doing exams, so I'm open to correction on that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,463 ✭✭✭Kiwi_knock

The only thing you have to do is check your seat number beforehand, that will be on a sheet outside the exam hall. You can't leave a 45, 60 or 90 min exam early. For 2 and 3 hour exams, you can leave after the 1st hour but can't leave in the last 20 mins.

Does anyone know when the timetables for the semester 2 exams will be published? I know I'm getting ahead of myself here, just I've an invitation to a celebration abroad towards the end of May and need to RSVP, book flights etc.

It's not usually until April I think is it?
I'm going to a concert myself on the 28th and I'm praying I don't have a half 3 exam that day.. Especially as I think many of my exams next semester are 3 hours :(

I honestly can't find anything on the NUIM website about bus timetables for the exams. It's pretty tempting to just get a bus to Dublin and a train out to Maynooth just so I'm not paying the usual wanker whose bus I take. He's an absolute prick to deal with.

They start on May 15th and run for two weeks. If you book anything for the end of May, before you see the timetable, I think you're probably asking for the universe to slap you across the head.

Of course, I'm not recommending this... but there's always the repeats in August. It'll cost you, though.

That's what I have to do, adds an hour onto the journey each way. Pain in the head.

A few of the papers were calling last night that the 5 of them were on their way back to Maynooth University.
The SU president has mentioned on the FB pages that the HQ would be open for people needing to talk, so unless they've been told?

Please, a number of families and friends of these women are grieving.
Let's not speculate on any possible causes of the accident. The Garda investigation will deal with that.

I myself went to a college that suffered a similar loss of life the year before I started. Its effect was felt in the college for years. R.I.P.
